(1)  Senior General Than Shwe inspects Kissapanadi Bridge project in Kyauktaw

YANGON, 3 Mar - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers and Ministers, left Maha Muni Pagoda in Kyauktaw by helicopter for Paletwa in Chin State yesterday afternoon.

They were welcomed there by Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Nyunt Lwin, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council and departmental officials, service personnel, members of various associations and nationals.

Senior General Than Shwe and party presented offertories to five members of the Sangha of Paletwa at Construction Yeiktha.

Senior General Than Shwe fulfilled the requirements of monasteries.

Then, Senior General Than Shwe presented a television set to officials for Township Union Solidarity and Development Association at Kimo Hall of Township Peace and Development Council Office and cordially met departmental officials, service personnel and towns elders.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and ministers also met local authorities and departmental officials.

Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Tin Hlaing reported to the Secretary-2 and ministers on condition of township agriculture works, forming of Township Fire Service Department, development of Paletwa Matupi road and streets of the township, appointment of health staff, township water supply and construction of new building for Basic Education Middle School.

Ministers Col Thein Nyunt, Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin replied the queries raised by U Tin Hlaing.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended to their needs for local rice sufficiency and regional development.

The Senior General and party left Paletwa by helicopter for Kyauktaw at 2 pm yesterday.

Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected Kissapanadi Bridge Project in Kyauktaw.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun reported to the Senior General on the construction work of the project at the project site.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U On Sapa and Senior Engineer (Bridge) U Than Zaw also reported to the Senior General on progress of the project and arrangements for construction works to be done.

Senior General Than Shwe stressed the need to complete the bridge as scheduled and presented gifts to staff of the project.

He then inspected maps and blueprints of Yangon-Sittway Highway and Kissapanadi TadaU Pagoda and attended to their needs.

Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe arrived back Sittway at 3.30 pm.

The Kissapanadi Bridge is a vital link on the Yangon-Sittway Highway connecting Sittway, Ponnagyun-Kyauktaw and MraukU townships.

The main bridge, 1,312.5 feet long, will be linked with 600 foot long approach roads on MraukU and Kyauktaw banks.

The facility with a 28-foot wide road and a 6-foot pedestrian lane can bear up to 60-ton loads.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo together with Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials met Secretary of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Kyaing, Rakhine State level departmental officials and construction committee of Lawkananda Pagoda at Maha Waiyan Sasana Beikman of Lawkananda Pagoda on 1 March evening.

The Secretary-2 gave instructions on keeping the environs of Lawkananda Pagoda clean and pleasant.

(2)  Secretary-1 inspects renovation of PyinOoLwin Botanical Gardens

YANGON, 3 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt left here for Mandalay this morning by Tatmadaw aircraft.

The Secretary-1 was accompanied by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint departmental heads and officials.

(3)  Good political, economic, social foundations achieved due to complete unity between government and people

YANGON, 3 Mar - The conclusion ceremony of Special Refresher Course No 1 for Basic Education Teachers of Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) was held at Yadana Hall of the institute in PyinOoLwin Township, Mandalay Division, at 10 am today, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were members of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, ministers, chairman and members of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the deputy ministers, the Mandalay Mayor, senior Tatmadaw officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of Division Councils, departmental officials, Rector of Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) Col Aung San Win, the Pro-Rectors, heads of department, faculty members and trainees.

(4)  Voters submit petitions of no confidence in representative-elect of NLD in Myingyan Township

YANGON, 3 Mar - In all, 82595 eligible voters of Myingyan Township submitted signed petitions expressing no confidence in an elected Pyithu Hluttaw representative of National League for Democracy on 9 February 1999.

82,595 eligible voters of the township presented their signed petitions of no confidence in U Maung Maung Win (a) U Win Maung of NLD at Gaungkwe, Thityon, Simeekhon, Layeintan and Nabuai station areas in the township.

U Maung Maung Win (a) U Win Maung of NLD was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw representative at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Myingyan Township Constituency-2 with 39,088 votes or 48.34 per cent of the voters.

Gaungkwe

In Gaungkwe station, farmer U Mann Myint of Thabaung village, on behalf of the 11,700 voters of eight village Gaungkwe, Nyaungto, Hsinkyaung, Yantapo, Taingkyayywa, Kyakaing, Takokemyo and Thabaung, expressed no confidence in U Maung Maung Win (a) U Win Maung of NLD.

The signed document was presented by farmer U Than Rye of Gaungkwe village to District Head U Tin Aung Nyunt of Information and Public Relations Department, on behalf of Myingyan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

Thityon

Voters of another nine villages of the township totaling 9,803 signed the no confident petition at the ceremony held in Thityon station.

Farmer U Tha Aung of Thityon village on behalf of the voters of Thityon, Zeebinkan, Tatywa, Tuywinpo, Alma, Yetaing, Yatha, Gint Ge and Hsingutkandaw villages submitted petition expressing their no confidence.

The signed document was presented to Myingyan Township Law Officer U Ko Ko Naing, on behalf of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission by farmer U Chit Nyein of Thityon village.

Simeekhon

In Simeekhon Station, 12,055 voters of Simeekhon, Nganan, Kalar, Kadaw, Hsarkyu, Kyi Ywa, Phetpinai, Kani villages submitted their expression of no confidence.

Farmer U Htay Lin of Simeekhon village, on behalf of voters of eight villages expressed no confidence in U Maung Maung Win (a) U Win Maung of NLD.

The signed document was presented to the Myingyan Township Education Officer U Tun Kyi, on behalf of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission by farmer U Ohn Maung of Simeekhon village.

Layeintan

In Layeintan Station, 15,778 voters of No 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 14 and 15 wards and Layeintan Village submitted their expression of no confidence.

Farmer U Kyaw Yin of Layeintan Village, on behalf of the voters, expressed no confidence in U Maung Maung Win (a) U Win Maung of NLD.

The signed document was presented to retired primary school head U Myint Thein, on behalf of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission by Goldsmith U Kyaw Dun of Ward 14.

Nabu-ai

In Nabu-ai Station, 8,917 voters of Nabu-ai, Pyawt, Nyaungdon, Paydaw and Pinle villages submitted their expression of no confidence.

Car owner U Soe Win of Nabuai Village submitted their expression of no confidence.

Farmer U Hla Maung of Nabuai presented the signed document to Township Judge U Ohn Thwin, on behalf of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission

Altogether 58,253 local people from 40 villages were present at the above ceremonies.

In all, 82,595 eligible voters signed the petitions and that is 102.15 percent.

(5)  36 members resign from Aunglan Township NLD

YANGON, 3 Mar - Thirty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Aunglan Township, Magway Division.

Thirty-six member of Aunglan Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Aunglan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 28 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Sedoktara Township

Similarly, 42 members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Sedoktara Township, Magway Division.

Forty-two members of Sedoktara Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Sedoktara Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 2 February 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6)  Minister meets Managing Director of Hopeson Myanmar Co Ltd

YANGON, 3 Mar - Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin met Managing Director of Hopeson Myanmar Co Ltd Mr Toshio Yoneda, together with Director of Hiroshima Bank Mr Kozo Hirata and Ms Setsuko Hirata, who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General U Khin Maung Latt of Directorate of Hotels and Tourism, Managing Director U Kyi Tun of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services and officials.

(7)  306,000 stimulant tablets, arms seized

YANGON, 3 Mar - A combined group comprising members of local battalion and intelligence unit searched a Van lKa/7062 driven by Soe Aung, 45, son of U Yoe of Yayayekwin Ward in Taunggyi, at Kunhein check point, Shan State (East), on 12 February.

The group nabbed Tun Aung, 30, son of U Aik San of Pansang Village, Pansang Township, Tun Hla, 30, son of U Lauk Cheng, Nyan Win (a) Aik San, 30, son of U San Khwa and Aik Chan (a) Naing Swe, 20, son of U Lauk Hsan of Hopang Village, Kunlong Township, who were riding in the car, with WY brand 306,000 stimulant tablets, three M-20 pistols, 22 rounds of ammunition, three magazines and two 2-G walkie-talkies.

Myanmar Police Force in Kunhein Township is taking action against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(8)  Minister meets Executive Vice-President of Sumitomo Corporation

YANGON, 3 Mar - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman' s Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Executive Vice-President of Sumitomo Corporation Mr Tsuneo Iwasaki and party who called at the MIC office at 11 am today.

Present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.

(9)  "Lolane" hair beautification techniques demonstrated

YANGON, 3 Mar - The "Lolane" hair beautification techniques demonstration and performance model parade, sponsored by Grand Wynn Enterprises Ltd and SC Artistry Co Ltd of Thailand, was held at Hotel Equatorial yesterday.

Present on the occasion were President Doctor Prasertsak Arnakorn of the Beauty Culture and Association of Bangkok, Thailand, and the beauticians, officials of Grand Wynn Enterprises Ltd and guests.

Managing Director U Hla Win (a) Nicko of Grand Wynn Enterprises Ltd gave a speech.

At the ceremony, officials demonstrated safe use of Lolane cosmetics.

(10)  Heroin seized in Kawthoung

YANGON, 3 Mar - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and departmental personnel, acting on information given by a duty-conscious person, waited on Shwewatun Street in Aungthukha Ward, Kawthoung, Taninthayi Division, on 23 February, searched Aung Myint, 35, son of U Kyi Han of Kawthoung and Nyunt Oo, 49, son of U Hla Nyunt. They seized 0.258 kilo heroin kept in eight soap boxes.

Further in the investigation, the authorities combed the house of Aung Myint in Kawthoung and seized 0.025 kilo heroin kept in a soap box hidden in the room behind the house, A/99 brand two stimulant tablets and 40,000 Bahts.

Action is taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
