(1)  Religious titles presented to 220 Sayadaws, 10 nuns, 16 lay persons for purification, perpetuation, promotion of Sasana

YANGON, 1 Mar - Religious titles were conferred on members of the Sangha, nuns and lay persons for their brilliant services in striving towards purification, perpetuation and promotion of Buddha Sasana and pariyatti and pairipatti Sasana this afternoon in Maha Pasana Cave at Kaba Aye, here.

The State Peace and Development Council as a means of paying reverence to these members of the Sangha, puns and laity for their religious services, issued the Notification 2/99 and conferred religious titles on them.

Dry rations were also offered to the members of the Sangha and nuns at the ceremony which was attended by State Ovadacariya Sayadaws members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, members of the State Central Working Committee of the Sangha, title recipient Sayadaws and members of the Sangha from abroad and inside the country, nuns and lay persons, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye and wife, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo's wife, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and wife, Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and wife, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun and wife, ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the mayor, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, deputy ministers, the vice-mayor and their wives, directors-general of Religious Affairs Department and Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and officials, officials of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, members of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, disciples of title recipient Sayadaws, donors and guests.

(2)  Secretary-l cleans Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 1 Mar - Patron of General Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at the southern stairway of the Shwedagon Pagoda early this morning.

The Secretary-1 was welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Leading Committee for General Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and members of the pagoda board of trustees.

The Secretary-1 and party paid obeisance to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace of the pagoda.

The Secretary-1 and party together with Myanmar engineers, Myanmar gemmologists and members of board of trustees climbed up to the top of the pagoda and paid obeisance to Htidaw, Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw atop.

The Secretary-1 and party cleaned the Seinphudaw with scented water and offered flowers. They then cleaned the Hngetmyatnadaw.

The Secretary-1 and party fitted jewellery donated by the public onto the Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw.

(3)  Secretary-1 attends dinner to mark 44th Conference of Myanmar Nurses Association

YANGON, 1 Mar - A dinner to mark the 44th Conference of Myanmar Nurses Association was held at the Institute of Nursing on Bogyoke Aung San Street today, attended by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the dinner were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Hla Bu, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, medical superintendents of the hospitals, matrons, retired matrons and nurses, representatives of state and division nurses associations, and special guests.

(4)  Secretary-1 receives Chief of Mission of UNHCR

YANGON, 1 Mar - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chief of Mission of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Yangon Mr Canh Nguyen Tang who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(5)  Secretary-1 attends ceremony to donate gold, jewellery and cash to Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 1 Mar - A ceremony to donate gold, jewellery and cash to the Shwedagon Pagoda was held at the Old Museum Tazaung on the pagoda platform this morning, attended by Patron of General Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were the Ministers, the Deputy Ministers, Chairman of Leading Committee for General Renovation of the Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, officials and well-wishers.

(6)  161 members resign from Mongphyat Township NLD

YANGON, 1 Mar - One hundred and sixty-one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Mongphyat Township, Shan State (East).

A total of 161 members of Mongphyat Township NLD, Shan State (East), on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mongphyat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 9-2-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7)  23 members resign from Pantanaw Township NLD

YANGON, 1 Mar - Twenty-three members resigned from National League for Democracy of Pantanaw Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Twenty-three members of Pantanaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pantanaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 17-2-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Minister inspects ancient pagodas, museum in Pyay

YANGON, 1 Mar - Minister for Culture U Win Sein, together with officials, visited Bawbawgyi Pagoda at Thiri Khittaya an ancient city, in Pyay, Bago Division, on 28 February afternoon.

The minister gave instructions on preservation of the pagoda.

Then, the minister and party proceeded to the excavation work site office of Hill No 35 at Thiri Khittaya southwest of Bawbawgyi Pagoda.

Assistant Director of Pyay Section of the Department of Archaeology U Naing Win and officials reported on excavation works with charts.

The minister fulfilled their needs, and inspected the excavation works.

Afterwards, the minister and party went to Thiri Khittaya Museum at Hmawza Ward.

They inspected construction work of the annex of the museum and exhibition rooms.

The minister gave instructions on timely completion of construction works.

Next, the minister and party also inspected Phayama Pagoda built by King Duttabaung.

(9)  Minister inspects airport facilities

YANGON, 1 Mar - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and officials, arrived at Yangon International Airport this morning.

In the hall of YIA, officials concerned reported on water supplying system and availability of water for the airport to the minister and party.

The minister and party proceeded to the aircraft workshop and inspected repair and reconditioning of aircraft, storage of machinery at Power Plant Section and left necessary instructions.

They then inspected works being done for moving pipelines of Gyobyu and Hlawga and other facilities of the airport including extension of runways.

(11)  Rector Sayadaw of ITBMU arrives back

YANGON, 1 Mar - Rector Sayadaw of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotikadhaja Bhaddanta Silanandabhivamsa arrived back here by air via Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday evening after visiting foreign countries.

The Sayadaw was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by the Pro-Rector (Teaching) Sayadaw and professors, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin, officials of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and officials of ITBMU.
