(1)  Union Solidarity and Development Association Executives' Advanced Management Course No 4, International Relations Course No 3 and Executives' Management Course No 17 opened

YANGON, 24 Feb - Union Solidarity and Development Association Executives' Advanced Management Course No 4, International Relations Course No 3 and Executives' Management Course No 17 were opened with a ceremony in Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby, Yangon Division, at 9 am today addressed by Patron of USDA Chairman of the. State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

Present on the occasion were members of the Panel of Patrons of USDA Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the Council members, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, other members of the Panel of Patrons of USDA, member of Central Executive Committee of USDA, the deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, heads of departments, guests, Course In-charge Lt-Col Myo Myint, course supervisors and trainees.

Excerpts from Senior General Than Shwe's guidance

* Independence and sovereignty are the most basic factors for a nation.

* First, a national force with full Union spirit that will safeguard independence and sovereignty and safeguard the Union against breaking up is required.

* Second requirement is the human resources which will utilize the rich natural resources of the nation to their utmost value. These two requirements are primary factors.

* The economic base should be built while developing human resources of the nation.

* We must build this economic base on self-reliance and should stand on our own feet.

* All the forces and resources should be valued and respected in a nation like us which is being rebuilt from the foundation.

(2)  General Maung Aye tours Phakant Township in Kachin State

YANGON, 24 Feb - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, ministers and senior Tatmadaw officers, left Myitkyina for Phakant by helicopter on 22 February morning.

They were welcomed there by departmental officials.

Then, Chairman of Phakant Township Peace and Development Council U Hla Myint reported to the General on sown acreage, cultivation of paddy, oil crops and seasonal crops, progress in laying of tar roads in the township and arrangements for improvements of streets linking Phakant at Uruyadana Hall.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win presented a supplementary report.

General Maung Aye gave instructions to officials on arrangements for extension of paddy cultivated acreage to increase to 75,000 acres within three years for rice sufficiency of Phakant region and improvement of roads.

General Maung Aye and party then inspected development of Phakant Township by car.

They went to Tanai where they were welcomed by Tactical Operations Commander Col Han Myint and departmental officials.

General Maung Aye met Tatmadawmen and their families of Tanai Station at regional battalion in Tanai.

(3)  Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of Singaporean ministers

YANGON, 24 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of Minister for Trade and Industry Mr Lee Yock Suan, Minister for Communications Mr Mah Bow Tan and Minister of National Development Mr Lim Hng Kiang and high ranking officials who attended the Myanmar-Singapore Third Joint Ministerial Working Committee at Karaweik Palace at 7 pm today.

The dinner was also attended by Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, wife of Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla and wife Daw Win Kyi, ministers, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee the Mayor and the deputy ministers and their wives, Ambassador of Myanmar to Singapore, Ambassador of Singapore to Myanmar and heads of department.

Before the dinner, the guests were entertained by the cultural troupe of Karaweik Palace with variety dances.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Minister Mr Lee Yock Suan presented a flower basket to the cultural troupe.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of the ministers and high ranking officials of Singapore.

(4)  Discussions on timely completion of road and bridge Projects

YANGON, 24 Feb - A coordination meeting on timely completion of road and bridge projects was held, in the assembly hall of Public Works (Head Office) this morning, attended by Chairman of Central Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Smooth and Secure Transportation Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials of ministries concerned.

(5)  "How to take the exam" lectures to be published

YANGON, 24 Feb - How to take the exam" lectures will appear in supplements of Myanma Alin and Kyemon dailies from 26 to 28 February.

The lectures for Myanmarsar, English and Mathematics will appear on 26 February, for Physics, Chemistry and Biology on 27 and for History, Geography, Economics and general information on 28.

(6)  18 executives resign from Kyauktan Township NLD

YANGON, 24 Feb - Eighteen executives resigned from the National League for Democracy of Kyauktan Township, Yangon Division.

Eighteen executives of Kyauktan Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Kyauktan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22-2-99 as they no longer wished to take part in party politics of NLD.

(7)  Nine executives resign from Pazundaung Township NLD

YANGON, 24 Feb - Nine executives resigned from the National League for Democracy Pazundaung Township, Yangon Division, on 22-2-99.

They were Vice-Chairman of Pazundaung Township NLD U Myint, Secretary U Khin Maung Win, Joint Secretary U Tint Naing, Treasurer U Min Zaw, Ma Mya Mya Yee in charge of information, and members of township executive committee U Tin Aye, U Kyawt Aung, U San Tin and U Thein Win.

They resigned of their own volition by sending letters of resignation, signboard, flag and seals of the party to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22-2-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Heroin, stimulants seized in Lashio, Mongshu

YANGON, 24 Feb - A combined team comprising members of regional intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force searched the house of Ma Khan Wai, daughter of U Sein Yaung, aged 33, of Soonlun Street, Ward-10, Lashio, Shan State (North), on 8 February.

The team seized 80 soap boxes containing heroin weighing 1.7713 kilograms from the house owner and Ma Aye Lyan, daughter of U San Pu, aged 28, of Sankaung Street, Ward-2, Lashio, who had arrived at that house.

Action is being taken against them according to Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

Similarly, a combined team comprising members of regional intelligence unit, the Tatmadaw, Myanmar Police Force and Ward Peace and Development Council, acting on information, searched the house of Maung Zaw, son of U Tin Shwe, aged 23, of Region-2, Loihsaunghtauk Ward, Mongshu Gem Land, Mongshu, Shan State (South), on 11 February.

The combined team seized 80 stimulants bearing words "WY".

Action is being taken against him according to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(9)  Deputy Prime Minister receives Vice-Managing Director of Asian International Investment

YANGON, 24 Feb - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Vice-Managing Director of Asian International Investment Group Co of Hongkong Mr Re Shili who called at his office at 11.30 am today.

Present also at the call were officials of the Government Office, Myanmar Investment Commission Office, Ministry of Transport and Ministry of Electric Power.

They discussed investment opportunities in Myanmar.

(10)  Demonstration of life saving method and fire fighting skills

YANGON, 24 Feb - Demonstration of life saving method and fire fighting skills was held at Shwegon Yeikmon Housing Estate on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road in Bahan Township this evening.

It was attended by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Heads of departments, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, Director-General of Fire Services Department Col Myint Tun, company commanders of All Myanmar Auxiliary Fire Brigades, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross Brigade and town elders.

Director-General Col Myint Tun reported on life saving methods and fire fighting skills and kinds of fire outbreak.

Members of women auxiliary Fire Brigade and Fire Brigade performed their fire fighting skills.

(11)  Commander gives guidance to Tatmadaw members of military parade columns of 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day

YANGON, 24 Feb - Chairman of Management Committee for the Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command gave guidance to the Tatmadaw members including officers and the rank and file from military parade columns of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day in Saya San Hall of Kyaikkasan Grounds this afternoon.

The commander spoke about the importance of the military parade, and cited the objectives of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

In dealing with security, he said as is known to all, axe-handles relying on external forces and some foreign countries and above-ground and underground insurgents are attempting to disturb development works of the State Peace and Development Council; therefore, everybody needs to have security vigilance, and it concerns not only the security committee but also other individual persons and working committees.

He also said that the Tatmadaw members are obliged to observe the prescribed do's and don'ts and military discipline; they also need to deal with the public politely and to avoid acts which can breed disrespect.

In dealing with health, he said that all need to pay special attention to their health; though arrangements have been made not to cause outbreaks of contagious diseases, it is necessary to ensure personal hygiene.
