(1) General Maung Aye attends inauguration of Thanlwin Bridge (Tasan)
YANGON, 20 Feb - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye attended the inauguration of Thanlwin Bridge (Tasan) linking Mongtung and Mongpan Townships this morning.

The opening ceremony of Thanlwin Bridge (Tasan) was held at the bridge this morning.
Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo made a speech on the occasion.
In his address, Lt-Gen Tin Oo said Thanlwin River Bridge (Tasan), the 900-foot long bailey suspension bridge, lies on Mongpang-Mongtung Road linking Shan State (South) with Shan State (East) and noted that Mongtung and Monghsat can now be reached from Taunggyi by car in a short time.
Due to difficult access as Thanlwin River divides Shan State, the areas in Shan State (East) were lagging in development, and special attention is being paid to building of roads and bridges in that region keeping with Senior General Than Shwe's guidance, he said.

(2) General Maung Aye inspects development projects in Monghsat
YANGON, 20 Feb - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, ministers and senior Tatmadaw officers, left Tachilek for Monghsat at 1 pm yesterday by Tatmadaw flight.
The General and party were welcomed at Monghsat Airport by officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Tin Maung Ohn and Tatmadaw officers, departmental officials of Monghsat District and Township, personnel and families.
The General and party then went round in the town of Monghsat by car. This morning, the General and party flew to Mongtung Township by helicopter and attended the opening ceremony of Thanlwin Bridge (Tasan) there.
The Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, who is accompanying the General, inspected 100 bed No 11 Military Hospital in Monghsat at 6.30 am today together with Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Vice-Quartermaster General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and departmental officials.
The Secretary-2 met the patients as commandant of the hospital Maj Zaw Win Maw conducted him round in the hospital.
Afterwards, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Township People's Hospital where they heard a report of Medical Superintendent Dr Kyi Soe on medical treatment at the hospital and requirements.
The Secretary-2 gave instructions on the report.
Similarly, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, accompanied by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and officials, went to Office of Monghsat District Union Solidarity and Development Association yesterday evening and met departmental official of Monghsat District and Township and members of the association there.

YANGON, 20 Feb - A merit-sharing ceremony for Maha Nayaka Kyaungdawgyi for residence of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Sayadaws was held at the Kyaungdawgyi near Maha Pasana Cave in Kaba Aye Hill this morning, attended by Secretary of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(4) Secretary-1 inspects Tokyo Plastic Pipe Factory, Korea PVC Pipe and Plastic Printing in Hlinethaya Industrial City
YANGON, 20 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, arrived at Tokyo Plastic Pipe Factory in Hlinethaya Industrial Zone No-1 in Hlinethaya Township at 3 pm today.
They were welcomed by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, heads of department, Chairman of Excel Company Limited U Thein Han and officials.
The Secretary-1 and party inspected production process of pipes at the factory.
Chairman of Excel Company Limited U Thein Han reported to the Secretary-1 on establishment of the factory, various kinds of pipe, utilizing of local-made raw materials and distribution of pipes to local market.
Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin and Deputy Chief Engineer of Public Works U Ba Shwe reported to the Secretary-1 on laying of pipeline from Hsetha Dam in PyinOoLwin to Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar), Central Training Department of Myanmar Police Force and Central Fire Service Training School to supply one million gallons of water.

(5) Secretary-1 attends coordination meeting on Y2K problem
YANGON, 20 Feb - A coordination meeting on Y2K problem was held at the Institute of Computer Science and Technology here this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Computer Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Also present at the meeting were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Chairman of the National Supervisory Committee for Y2K Problem Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, the deputy ministers, members of the National Supervisory Committee for Y2K Problem, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, officials of the Office of Strategic Studies, Chairmen of Myanmar Computer Federation, Myanmar Computer Technicians Association, Myanmar Computer Entrepreneurs Association and officials and guests.
The Secretary-l said Y2K problems that may occur in computers and electronic equipment are being faced in the world. Although there is no big difficulty in the problem concerning Y2K in Myanmar, there may be some processes of solving the problem, he said.

(6) Minister arrives back from tour of four ASEAN nations
YANGON, 20 Feb - Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung arrived back from Bangkok this evening after visiting Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand at the invitation of the foreign ministers of respective countries.
Minister U Win Aung was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and officials, heads of the embassies of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.
Minister U Win Aung visited Brunei Darussalam on 16 and 17 February, Indonesia on 17 and 18 February Singapore on 18 and 19 February and Thailand on 19 and 20 February, and discussed promotion of friendly relations, ASEAN affairs and mutual interest with the foreign minister of the respective countries.
Minister U Win Aung called on His Majesty King Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in Brunei Darussalam, President of Indonesia Dr BJ Habibie, Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong and Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore and King of Thailand His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
While in Indonesia, Minister U Win Aung also met Secretary-General of ASEAN Mr Rodolfo C Severino Jr.
In his tour, Minister U Win Aung met ambassadors, military attaches and staff of the Myanmar embassies in Singapore Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia, and gave instructions on the role of diplomatic personnel to be dynamic and sharp m implementing the policy of foreign affair.

(7) UDNR students go sightseeing in Yangon
YANGON, 20 Feb - The students of Regular Course No 30 of University for Development of National Races led by Rector Col Zaw Min Thein arrived at Yangon Central Railway Station this morning.

YANGON, 20 Feb - One hundred and twenty -mine members resigned from National League for Democracy Myaungmya Township, Ayeyawady Division.
One hundred and twenty-nine members of Myaungmya Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation Myaungmya township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 14-12-98 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 20 Feb - Similarly, 190 members resigned from National League for Democracy of Dedaye Township Ayeyawady Division.
A total of 190 members of Dedaye Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their
own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dedaye Township
Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned
on 4-1-99 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
