(1) Senior General Than Shwe receives Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army

YANGON, 17 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army General Surayud Chulanont and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 2 pm today.

Also present together with Senior General Than Shwe were Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director of Supply and Transport Brig-Gen Tin Tun, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Military Attache of Myanmar Embassy in Thailand Lt-Col Kyaw Han.

(2) General Maung Aye receives visiting Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army

YANGON, 17 Feb - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye received Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army General Surayud Chulanont and party at Zeya Thiri Beikman at Konmyinttha at 10.30 am today.

(3) Secretary-l meets Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army

YANGON, 17 Feb - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Director of Defence Services Intelligence Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met Commander-in-Chief of Royal Thai Army General Surayud Chulanont and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1.30 pm today.

Also present together with the Secretary-1 were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director of Supply and Transport Brig-Gen Tin Tun, Deputy Chief of the Office of Strategic Studies and Deputy Director of Defence Services Intelligence Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and Military Attache of Myanmar Embassy in Thailand Lt-Col Kyaw Han.

The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Thailand Mr Pensak Chalarak and Army and Air Attache of Thailand Col Chaiwat Satondee.

(4) Nyaunglaybin Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 17 Feb - Nineteen Executive Committee members and Two hundred and seventy-five ordinary Nyaunglaybin Township National League or Democracy, Bago Division, tendered their resignations of their own volition on 14 February 1999.

Altogether 19 EC members and 275 ordinary members of the Nyaunglaybin Township NLD resigned from the party membership of their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Nyaunglaybin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 14 February, personal of the Township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(5) US $13,000 donated to MMCWA

YANGON, 17 Feb - Well-wishers donate d cash to buy a motor car and 1,000 pairs of child slippers to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association today.

The cash and slipper donation ceremony held at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel this afternoon was attended by Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairpersons, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe and Dr Kyi Soe, executives and officials and donors.

President of Japan Hamilton Ltd Mr Nobuhisa Honyo and Mr Utaro Utsuki of Shinto Prayer Ishikawa, Tammagu Shrine, donated US $ 13,000 to the association to buy a car and U Min Min Aung of Silver Wave Co Ltd of Japan he pairs of slipper worth K 2 million.

Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe accepted the donations.

Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe thanked the donors.

(6) PHS Telephone System launched at Sittway Hospital

YANGON, 17 Feb - A ceremony to launch PHS Telephone System at Sittway Hospital was held at the hospital in Sittway on 16 February.

The 50-line telephone exchange worth US $ 150,000 was donated by Basic Human Needs Association and NTT Do Co Mo of Japan.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Aung Htwe thanked the donors.

Chairman of Basic Human Needs Association Mr Takeo Nobusawa and Manager of NTT Do Co Mo Mr Koyahera Hideo delivered speeches.

Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin accepted the related documents and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

Commander Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin and officials of BHN and Do Co Mo formally opened the telephone exchange.

Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun met health staff at the hospital and inspected construction site for 16-bed traditional medicine hospital.

(7) Workshop on Findings of Fertility Survey for Country Report commences

YANGON, 17 Feb - A ceremony to open Dissemination Workshop on Findings of Fertility and Reproductive Health Survey for Country Report jointly conducted by the Ministry of Immigration and Population and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) was held at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning.

Present on the occasion were ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, deputy ministers, representatives of UN agencies, department heads, chairman of Myanmar Medical Association, chairperson and vice-chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, chairperson of Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association, officials of Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myanmar Education Research Bureau and the University of Computer Science and Technology and guests.

(8) 10 members resign from Dagon Myothit Township NLD

YANGON, 17 Feb - Ten members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Dagon Myothit Township, Yangon Division, on 12, 21, 23, 26 January and 9 February 1999.

One member of Dagon Myothit (East) Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dagon Myothit Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 January, and another nine members of Dagon Myothit (South) followed suit on 12, 23, 26 January and 9 February respectively as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Subject: Permission given to U Arnt Kyi to resign as Pyithu Hluttaw representative-elect from Sedoktara Township Constituency in Magway Division

1. U Arnt Kyi of the National League for Democracy, Pyithu Hluttaw representative elected at the Multiparty Democracy General Election from Sedoktara Township Constituency in Magway Division, submitted of his own volition to this Commission that he be permitted to resign because of ill health.

2. Upon the above-mentioned submission, this Commission hereby announces that U Arnt Kyi has been permitted to resign from being Hluttaw representative-elect of Sedoktara Constituency effective today under Section 11 (e) of the Pyithu Hluttaw Election Law.

(10) Minister for Energy inspects oil fields

YANGON, 17 Feb - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi inspected works under the ministry in central Myanmar from 14 to 16 February.

The minister and party inspected Htaukshabin-Kanni oil field where manager U Mya San reported on condition of test well No 194, boosting production and future tasks. The minister gave instructions on work

The minister went on to Man oil field and inspected test wells No 647 and 648. He met officials of Baker Hughes Solution Co and urged them to make efforts for drilling as scheduled.

The minister then presented K 100,000 for service personnel.

On 15 February, the minister and party met service personnel and officials of Gold Water Co in cooperation with Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise in Yenangyoung oil field.

The minister inspected Chauk oil field and production of sulfuric acid at No 1 Fertilizer (Salay) and alum factory of Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise.

On 16 February the minister inspected Ayadaw natural gas field and Kyaukhwet Letpando region.

The minister and party inspected No 2 fertilizer Plant (Kyunchaung).

(11) Second Yangon Gems Emporium '99 continues

YANGON, 17 Feb - The Second Yangon Gems Emporium '99 organized by the Cooperative Department and TTF (Yangon) Co Ltd continued at Hotel Equatorial today for the second day.

Local and foreign gem merchants and tourists visited the emporium and bought gems from seventy-five booths of gems cooperative societies and local gem entrepreneurs.

The gems on display are being sold in US dollars.

It is open from 10 am to 6 pm till 21 February.

Admission is free.

(12) CSO opens In-service Computer Application Course No 1/99

YANGON, 17 Feb - In-service Computer Application Course No 1/99 of the Central Statistical Organization of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development was opened in the CSO training hall yesterday.

Present at the opening ceremony were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, directors-general guests and trainees.

In his address, Minister U Soe Tha spoke of the need for departments and organizations of the ministry to be skillful in operating computers for they have to deal with data on national development.

He said it is essential for the offices to build database in the computers of the Head Office and regional database in state/division CSO offices.

He said more computers need to be installed and used to keep up with the Information Technology and urged the trainees to share their experience and skill in their own offices.
