(1)  Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe, Daw Kyaing Kyaing host reception and dinner to mark 52nd Anniversary Union Day

YANGON, 12 Feb - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than' Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing hosted reception and dinner to mark the 52nd Anniversary Union Day on the lawns of the Presidential Residence on Ahlon Road this evening.

At 6.30 pm today, the Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at the venue of the dinner where they were welcomed by Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and members Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Lt-Gen Kyaw Than and Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Lt-Gen Tin Tun and Lt-Gen Tin Hla and ministers.

The Senior General and Daw Kyaing Kyaing cordially greeted members of cultural troupes of national races from States and Divisions, members of Dawei cultural troupe from Taninthayi Division and delegates of State/Division Union Solidarity and Development Associations.

(2)  Over 15,000 attend 52nd Anniversary Union Day Flag-Hoisting Ceremony at People's Square

YANGON, 12 Feb - The 52nd Anniversary Union Day Flag-Hoisting Ceremony was held at the People's Square here this morning.

After the State Military Band took its designated place, the Union Flag which rested a night each in Yangon South District, Yangon West District, Yangon North District and Yangon East District, reached the People's Square at 7.20 am by the Union boat.

Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Lt-Col Aye Lwin conveyed the Union Flag from the Union Boat to the Union Flag Relay Team the Union flag Relay Team led by Chairman Of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay.

The Union Flag Relay Team made up of members of the Panel of Patrons of the 52nd Anniversary Union Day Flag-Hoisting Ceremony member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Education U Than Aung , Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayo U Ko Lay, Union Day delegate U Ngun Woan from Thangtlang Township of Chin State, Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Police officers, Union nationals and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association conveyed the Union Flag to the music of the royal drum troupe of the State Orchestra.

At 7.30 am, the Union Flag was planted in the silver bowl on the dais with the backdrop decorated with the emblems of the states - Manaw post of Kachin State, Keinnaya bird of Kayah State, Phasi drum encircled by two buffalo horns of Kayin States, Hornbill bird of Chin State, Hintha mythical bird of Mon State, Thiriwitsa and conch shell of Rakhine State and Shan man playing the long drum of the Shan State.

Afterwards, members of the Panel of Patrons took their designated places on the stage.

Also present were USDA CEC members, members of Division and District Peace and Development Councils, senior military officers, heads of central organizations, directors-general and managing directors, deputy directors general, officers on special duty, heads of office of the ministries, members of YCDC and departmental heads, rectors and principals, medical superintendents, members of the Work Committee for Organizing the Ceremony, divisional departmental heads, township education officers of Yangon City area, officials and members of Myanmar War veteran Organization (central) Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myanmar Music, Thabin, Motion Picture and Artists and Artisans Asiayons, Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar Medical Association, Myanmar Dental Association, Myanmar Nurses Association, Myanmar Engineers Association, Myanmar Assistant Health Officers Association, Myanmar Anti-Narcotic Drugs Association, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Myanmar Women's Entrepreneurial Association, Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, couples of national races of Fine Arts Department, local and foreign journalists, newsmen from the Bangkok bureau of Tokyo Broadcasting Service (TBS), Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper and Asahi Shimbun newspaper, members of Division, District and Township USDAs, cultural troupe member and Union day delegates of states and delegates of states and Divisions, Thet, Mro, Khami, Dainet and Maramagyi nationals of Rakhine States who are here on a study tour, teachers, students, members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, nurses, ward authorities and public totaling over 15,000.

(3)  Union Flag conveyed from North Okkalapa to City Hall

YANGON, 12 Feb - The Union Flag was conveyed through the four districts - Kyauktan Township of Yangon South District, Hline Township of Yangon West District, Hlegu Township of Yangon North District and North Okkalapa Township of Yangon East District in Yangon Division, resting for a night in each district from 8 to 11 February.

The Union Flag arrived at People's Square on Pyay Road this morning. Then, it was conveyed back to the City Hall and planted in the silver bowl on the stage in the Mayor's Parlor where it would rest for one year.

A ceremony to convey the Union Flag from Mandaing sports ground of North Okkalapa Township, Yangon East District, to the People's Square started at 6.30 am today.

Chairman of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aye Lwin, Secretary Major Win Nwe, members of Ward and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental personnel, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Myanmar Police Force, Red Cross and Fire Brigade members, members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association and people saluted the Union Flag together with the Guard of Honour of Yangon Command. Military Band of Yangon Command played the National Anthem of the Union of Myanmar.

(4)  Secretary-1 receives D-G of Japan LDP Party Policy Research Council

YANGON, 12 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Director-General of Liberal Democratic Party Policy Research Council Mr Tomomitsu Iwakura and party of Japan at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1.30 pm today.

Also present were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas d National Races and Deployment Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet Ambassador of Japan Dr Kazuo Asakai.

(5)  Specialist Hospital (Waibagi) in North Okkalapa opened

YANGON, 12 Feb - Hailing the 52nd Anniversary Union Day, the inauguration ceremony of Specialist Hospital (Waibagi) was held at the hospital at Waibagi Myothit in North Okkalapa Township Yangon Division, at 8 am today, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt. Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, officials of the State Peace and development Council Office, heads of department, directors-general, rectors, medical superintendents and directors of the Ministry of Health's Medical Superintendent of the Specialist Hospital (Waibagi) Dr Khin May Nyunt, professors, heads of department, medical specialists, doctors, nurses, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Kyaw Lwin of Construction Project Group No 4, members of District and Township Peace and Development Councils, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross Society, Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and students.

Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint formally opened the hospital.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt pressed the button to unveil the bronze plaque of the Specialist Hospital (Waibagi).

(6)  Secretary-l inspects construction of building for member Sayadaws of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee

YANGON, 12 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this afternoon inspected progress of construction of building for member Sayadaws of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee on Kaba Aye Hill in Mayangon Township and gave necessary instructions to officials.

The Secretary-1 together with officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office arrived at the construction site at 3 pm.

They were welcomed by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister U Aung Khin and officials of Public Works.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the progress of work.

Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and officials reported to the Secretary-1 on the work done.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended to their needs and left there.

(7)  Karaweik Palace opened

YANGON, 12 Feb - Hailing the 52nd Anniversary Union Day, Karaweik Palace, jointly renovated by Zaykaba Company and Mya Yeik Nyo Group of Hotels was opened at the palace this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 poured silver conch-shell water on the archway to mark the opening of the palace.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, ambassadors and officials of foreign embassies, members of cultural troupes from states and divisions, national races of the excursion team from Maungtaw region, Rakhine State, entrepreneurs, Managing Director of Zaykaba Company and Mya Yeik Nyo Group of Hotels U Khin Shwe, members of the board of directors and staff and guests.

U Than Hla of Teingya Htidawtin Group read the document about the palace.

Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin and U Khin Shwe formally opened the palace.

The Secretary-1 and ministers performed the ritual of golden and silver showers to mark the success of the ceremony.

U Khin Shwe explained to the Secretary-1 and party the work of renovating the facility with audio visual aids in Shwewa Hall of the palace.

The Secretary-1 and party watched Myanmar traditional dances in Dekkhina Hall.

They then inspected Myanmar handicraft shop and jewellery shop in front of the palace.

The two companies renovated the palace to retain its original styles under arrangements between Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism and Zaykaba Co Ltd.

Karaweik Palace houses modern restaurants in Lawkanat Hall, Shwewa Hall, Dekkhina Hall and Uttara Hall were Myanmar, Chinese, Oriental and Western foods are served and are also available on buffet system.

It can cater to ceremonies or gatherings of social and economic organizations, with capacity for 700 to 1,000 guests.

(8)  Secretary-1 attends ceremony to donate K 5m to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association

YANGON, 12 Feb - A ceremony for donation of K 5 million towards the funds of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association by Mr Michael Sampoerna was held at Shwewa Hall of Karaweik Palace at Kandawgyi at 9.45 am today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, the deputy ministers, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, Mr Michael Sampoerna and guests.

Mr Michael Sampoerna explained the purpose of the donation and presented K 5 million to Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe.

The chairperson presented a certificate of honour to the well-wisher and expressed thanks to him.

(9)  Ministers inspect Aungzeya Bridge in Insein

YANGON, 12 Feb - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, accompanied by officials this morning arrived at Aungzeya Bridge Construction Office of Public Works in Insein.

In the hall of construction office, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe reported on construction of the bridge and Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than on waterways conditions.

The ministers and deputy ministers proceeded to the construction site and inspected the works undertaken and left necessary instructions.

(10)  AWB seeks means to develop industries in Mandalay

YANGON, 12 Feb - Asia Wealth Bank Ltd met industrialists in Mandalay this morning, seeking means to help set up new industries and extend industrial business and exports of the region.

In his speech, Vice Chairman of AWB U Aik Tun explained the purpose of the meeting, which was held at Setmu Myothit in Pyigyitagun Township, Mandalay, and services of the bank.

Led by Chairman of the bank U Win Maung, AWB officials gave answers to queries raised by participants and suggestions on offering financial assistance in promoting industries and their products.

Member of Mandalay City Development Committee Lt-Col Kyaw Win, Chairman of Mandalay Industrial Zone Development Committee U Maung Soe and members, other officials and guests also took part in the discussions.

(11)  17 members resign from Pyinmana Township NLD

YANGON, 12 Feb - Seventeen members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyinmana Township, Mandalay Division.

Nine members of Pyinmana Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyinmana Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 6 January 1999 and eight members followed suit on 8 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

198 resign from Pyawbwe Township

Similarly, 198 members of Pyawbwe Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyawbwe Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 18 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
