(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Iran

YANGON, 11 Feb - Senior General Than Shwe , Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Seyed Mohammad Khatami, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran on the occasion of the National Day of the Islamic Republic of Iran which falls on 11 February 1999.

(2) National entrepreneurs to put 500,000 acres and 50,000 acres under oil palm, rubber in Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 10 Feb - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye attended the ceremony to put into service Kawthoung-Khamaukkyi Road, a section of Kawthoung-Bokepyin-Taninthayi Myeik Motor Road, in Kawthoung on 7 February morning.

Also present at the ceremony were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council, ministers, deputy ministers, department heads, departmental officials of Taninthayi Division, officials of Kawthoung-District and Township and service personnel.

Then, General Maung Aye and party inspected the 22-foot-wide road, and met those present at the ceremony.

Kawthoung-Bokepyin Tanintnayi-Myeik Motor Road is 302 mile 5 furlong long, a 33-mile section of which at the side of Kawthoung has already been tarred.

Earthwork has already been carried out along the remaining section, Khamaukkyi-Karathuri-Bokepyin Road.

General Maung Aye and party inspected the new road from Kawthoung to Khamaukkyi Village by car.

Then, General Maung Aye and party inspected a bridge being built near Khamaukkyi Village on Taninthayi-Myeik Motor Road.

Later General Maung Aye and party went on to Karathuri Village.

They were welcomed there by officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and villagers.

Next, General Maung Aye and party flew on to Bokepyin by helicopter.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Win Swe and senior military officers, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Maung Maung Khin and departmental officials and families.

General Maung Aye and party went on an inspection tour of Bokepyin.

On 8 February, General Maung Aye and party flew on to Taninthayi by helicopter, where they were welcomed by departmental officials, services personnel, teachers and students and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

(3) Secretary-l inspects work done to enhance durability and splendour of htidaw of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 10 Feb - A meeting was held at Old Museum Tazaung at Shwedagon Pagoda this morning to coordinate gilding of the pagoda and upgrading of the durability of the golden Htidaw, with an address by Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt being carried out with modern techniques and equipment for perpetuity of the htidaw based on findings on the present condition of the htidaw.

Member of the pagoda board of trustees U Thant Zin discussed gilding of the stupa.

The Secretary-l gave suggestions and the meeting ended with concluding remarks.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, members of the leading committee and the work committee, Myanmar engineers and members of the pagoda board of trustees.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected steel tiers and the post of the htidaw, cleaning of the gold bells, gold foiling and gilding of parts of the htidaw.

He then went round inspection the progress of renovation and construction of religious buildings on the pagoda platform.

(4) Secretary-l inspects Union Day dinner arrangements

YANGON, 10 Feb - Chairman of the Central Committee for Observance of the 52nd Anniversary Union Day Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected arrangements being made for the Union Day dinner and the full-dress rehearsal of the dances of cultural troupe members of national races which will be staged at the dinner.

On arrival at the Presidential Residence compound on Ahlon Road at 6.45 pm today, the Secretary-l was welcomed by members of the central committee Member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, members of the central committee and the management committee and officials.

He watched the full-dress rehearsal of the dances of cultural troupe members.

He cordially greeted the members of the cultural troupes, and left later in the evening.

(5) 312.14 kilos of ephedrine powder seized

YANGON, 10 Feb - Acting on information, a combined team comprising members of the regional intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force and departmental officials, searched Mandalay-bound Toyota Hilux (3A/4607) coming from Tamu near the border of Myanmar and India on 2 February morning.

The team seized 312.14 kilos of ephedrine powder and arrested driver Myint Win (a) Hsanshea aged 27, son of U Hmwe, Thala Ward-5, Monywa, and San Lwin (a) La Lyanna, aged 37, son of U La Hsan Nga, Zedan Ward-9, Tamu, and Ma Khin Hta Yee (a) Byet Ki, aged 27, daughter of U Kawlar, Boakkan Village, Tamu Township.

Effective action will be taken against them according to the law.

(6) Illegal sawn timber seized in Letpadan

YANGON, 10 Feb - Illegal sawn timber was seized by a team comprising officials of Inspection Division, Forest Department Head Office, and Letpadan Township Forest Department from saw mills on Bogyoke Road in Letpadan, Bago Division, on 8 January.

The seized sawn timber was 2.4641 tons of sawn teak and 8.7326 tons of square blocks of teak from Shwebaho-wunhsaung Cooperative Saw Mill and warehouse of Khaing Shwewa Cooperative Society, 5.903 tons of sawn teak, 0.360 ton of sawn Pyingado, 0.450 ton of grooved plank of Pyingado and 0.7125 ton of grooved plank of teak from U Aye Myint Saw Mill and 3.196 tons of logs and 2.726 tons of sawn timber from Kyaw-soemyo Saw Mill.

The authorities also seized illegal sawn timber weighing 28.58 tons from lorries with number plates salon/7811, 7Kagyil4m and Thal8772 on 21 January.

The seized timber was moved to a safe place, and action is being taken against the owners.

(7) Union Flag conveyed from Hline Tsp to Hlegu

YANGON, 10 Feb - The Union flag which rested overnight on the stage in Yangon Command Sports Ground in Hline Township, Yangon West District, was conveyed from there to Hlegu, Yangon North District, this morning by the Union Flag relay teams.

At 6.40 am, the Flag relay programme started in the sports ground with the attendance of members of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council, members of Township Peace and Development Councils in the district, members of Union Solidarity and Development  Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red CTDSS and Auxiliary Fire Brigade district and township level departmental officials, teachers and students, nurses and local people of 13 townships.

They saluted the Union Flag with the Guard of Honour of Yangon Command while the Tatmadaw (Air) Band Troupe played the National Anthem.

Afterwards, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein took out the Union Flag from the silver bowl on the stage at 6.45 am and carried it flanked by Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) and Police Officers and 32 Union nationals. He handed it over to Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu who was waiting in front of the archway of the sports grounds.

(8) Myanmar Education delegation arrives back from Singapore

YANGON, 10 Feb - Myanmar Education delegation led by Minister for Education U Than Aung arrived back here by air this afternoon from Singapore after attending the 34th Conference of the South-East Asian Ministers of Education Council held from 7 to 9 February in Singapore.

(9) 140 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 10 Feb - One hundred and forty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Ninety-six members of Pyapon Township NLD, Pyapon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 10 December 1998 and another 44 on 11 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Sedoktara Township

Similarly, 26 members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Sedoktara Township, Magway Division.

Twenty-six members of Sedoktara Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Sedoktara Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 26 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10) Minister inspects Myathida market ship

YANGON, 10 Feb - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, inspected Myathida market ship which was anchored at Botahtaung Jetty this morning.

Myathida market ship of Inland Water Transport runs between Yangon and Mandalay.

Managing Director U Tun Aung Myint reported to the minister on the route of the ship, difficulties, shops on board the ship and extension of arrangements.

Three market ships have been added to the first one running on the route.

(11) 316th cash donation for Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 10 Feb - The 316th cash donation for Shwedagon Pagoda was held at the ancient Buddha Image Tazaung on the pagoda platform yesterday.

Altogether 230 well-wishers donated K 7,214,903 to the pagoda through members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees.

Well-wishers shared mer, its for their meritorious deed in the presence of Sayadaw Bhaddanta Okkahta of Chaukhtatgyi Taik Sasana Gonyikyaung.

(12) Deputy Minister meets ICRC officials

YANGON, 10 Feb - Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung met representatives in Yangon of the International Committee of the Red Cross Mr Rene Baeriswyl and Mr Leon de Riedmatten who called at the Ministry of Home Affairs yesterday.

Present at the call were Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Maj-Gen Soe Win, Deputy Director-General U Saw Ngwe of Prisons Department and Head of Office U Yan Myo Aung Thein.

(13) Seminar on agro-based products held

YANGON, 10 Feb - Seminar on Agro-based Products and Processed Food Market and Possibilities of Exporting Agro-based Processed Food Products of Myanmar was held at Myanma Agriculture Service Head Office in Yankin Township this morning with the co-sponsorship of Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

Present on the occasion were officials of the Agriculture Planning Department, Myanma Agriculture Service, Myanmar Farms Enterprise, Myanma Cotton and Sericulture Enterprise, Myanma Foodstuff Enterprise, Directorate of Regional Industrial Coordination and Industrial Inspection, Cooperative Department, Cottage Industries Department, Cooperative Export Import Enterprise and Myanmar Science and Technological Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, the Ministry of industry-l, the Ministry of Cooperatives and the Ministry of Science and Technology, entrepreneurs and guests.

At the seminar, Expert Mr Eiichiro Koizumi explained about Japan's processed food market condition and possibilities of exporting agro based processed food products of Myanmar.
