YANGON, 9 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met delegates to the 52nd Anniversary Union Day in National Indoor Stadium-l, Thingangyun Township, here at 8.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Rail Transport information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, senior military officers, members of the 52nd Anniversary Union Day Management Committee, Union Day delegates and the national races excursion team from Maungtaw Township, Rakhine State.

(2)  Flight kitchen unit for aircraft catering service opened

YANGON, 9 Feb - Opening ceremony of a flight kitchen unit for aircraft catering service built by Department of Civil Aviation in cooperation with Myanmar LSG Lufthansa Service Ltd was held at the unit on Yangon International Airport premises this morning, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw L win, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Communication Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council, the directors-general, the managing directors and principals of departments and economic organizations and schools, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LSG Lufthansa Service Holding AG of Germany Mr Helmut Woelki and guests.

(3)  Tatmadaw, people destroy 6,181.66 acres of illicit poppy plantations Nov '98 to 31 Jan '99

YANGON, 9 Feb - The government is resolved to eradicate narcotic drugs as national duty, and the combined teams comprising members of Tatmadaw columns, local intelligence units, Myanmar Police Force and local people with the leadership of the respective military commands have been incessantly destroying the poppy plantations illegally grown in the remote areas of Shan State.

In January t999, a total of 2,559.05 acres of poppy plantations - 131 acres in Hsenwi Township in Shan State (North), 896.40 acres in Tangyang Township, 98 acres in Kunlong Township, 149.50 acres in Muse Township, 48 acres in Hopang Township, 55.50 acres in Namkham Township, 390.75 acres in Monekoe region, 749.90 acres in Laukkai Township, 40 acres in Talay township in Shan State (East) were destroyed.

Acreage of illicit poppy plantations destroyed from November 1998 to 31 January 1999 are as follows:

    (d)    Kutkai Township                             72.00 acres
    (e)    Hsenwi Township                          398.00 acres

    (i)    Hsipaw Township                             13.00 acres
    (j)    Hpang Township                               48.00 acres

    (l)    Phekhon Township                        1,267.31 acres
    (m)  Talay Township                                 80.00 acres
    (n)   Kengtung Township                           11.00 acres

A total of 6,181.66 acres of poppy plantations illegally grown in Shan State (North), Shan State (South), Shan State (East), Kayah and Kachin Stales have been destroyed, and efforts are continuing to search and destroy the illegal poppy plantations.

(4)  1.683 stimulant tablets seized

YANGON, 9 Feb - A combined team comprising members of Myanmar Police Force and local people conducted a search on Ma Kyi Kyi Htwe, 36, daughter of U Dos Mahammed of 195, 17th Street, Nyandaw Ward, PyinOoLwin Township, at Sea-gull checkpoint in Myawady, Kayin State, on 30 January. They seized 1,683 stimulant tablets bearing WY and .5 kilo of heroin kept in 22 soap boxes.

Myanmar Police Force in Myawady is taking action against her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(5)  Secretary-l meets Lufthansa Chairman

YANGON, 9 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt met Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of LSG, Lufthansa Service Holding AG of Germany Mr Helmut Woelki and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1 pm today.

Also present at the call together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(6)  Medicines, medical equipment donated to military hospital

YANGON, 9 Feb - Chairman of Nyaungdon Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Maha Visutamma Taik-thit-kyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Ghanthavacaka Pandita U Nandiyabhivamsa donated medicine and medical equipment worth K 50000 to No 2 Military Hospital (500-bed) at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Sayadaws, Commandant of the hospital Col Min Naing and senior military officers.

(7)  Eighth research paper-reading session on traditional medicine held

YANGON, 9 Feb - The eighth research paper-reading session on traditional medicine was held at the Traditional Medicine Department on U Wisara Road in Dagon Township this morning.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Director-General of TMD Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Tun, Director-General of Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe, officials, members of Traditional Medicine Council, resource persons and guests.

The minister said Myanmar traditional medicine that had existed for many years almost disappeared during the colonial period. After regaining of Independence, the practice gradually developed with the encouragement of the government, he said.

The State Peace and Development Council has been endeavouring for fully providing health care service for the people, with efforts for uplift of health and fitness of the entire nation and emphasis was also placed on development of Myanmar traditional medicine, he added.

The minister spoke of the need for TMD to do research on medicine to keep abreast with international standard according to the National Health Policy.

He said Head of State Senior General Than Shwe gave guidance on preservation of potent Myanmar medicine during his inspection tour of Traditional Medicine Institute and hospital in 1996, treatment on some diseases by traditional medicines and research, production, conservation of medicinal plants and arrangements for reproduction of rare medicinal plants.

He cited establishment of research and development department, holding of traditional medicine research paper-reading sessions and efforts for perpetuity of traditional medicine.

Altogether 24 papers were presented at the session which continues tomorrow.

(8)  28 members resign from South Okkalapa Township NLD

YANGON, 9 Feb - Twenty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of South Okkalapa Township, Yangon Division.

Ten members of South Okkalapa Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to South Okkalapa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 25 January 1999 and 18 members followed suit on 2 February, totaling 28, as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  125 members resign from Myeik Township NLD

YANGON, 9 Feb - One hundred and twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myeik Township, Taninthayi Division.

Seventy-five members of Myeik Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Myeik Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 23 January 1999 and 50 members followed suit on 27 January totaling 125 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  MPI to issue Union Day commemorative K 20 stamp

YANGON, 9 Feb - Myanma Posts and Telecommunications will issue and sell a new K 20 stamp in commemoration of the 52nd Anniversary Union Day which falls on 12 February.

MPT is issuing high-valued definitive stamps with logos depicting Myanmar musical instrument series to conveniently paste stamps on parcels in postal service. The new stamp which is part of the series will be sold at post offices in states and divisions beginning 9.30 am on 12 February.

Stamp collectors from other cities may contact Yangon GPO (01-20477) or Mandalay GPO (02-21506) not later than February 12 noon to buy FDCs and MA in advance.
