(1) National entrepreneurs urged to cultivate edible oil palm, rubber on commercial scale in Taninthayi Division
YANGON, 7 Feb - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye gave instructions on expansion of cultivation of oil palm in Taninthayi Division at the meeting in the hall of the regional battalion in Kawthoung yesterday.
Also present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council, ministers, the deputy minister and departmental officials.
General Maung Aye said the national entrepreneurs accompanying them were going to make field trips, reclaim vacant, virgin and fallow lands for cultivation of crops in Taninthayi Division.

(2) Secretary-l inspects Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project, Paleik Textile and Finishing Plant
YANGON, 7 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Paunglaung Hydroelectric Power Project and Paleik Textile and Finishing Plant in Mandalay Division yesterday.
The Secretary-1, accompanied by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials, left here by Tatmadaw flight yesterday morning and arrived at Toungoo, Bago Division, at 8.30 am.
They were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye.

(3) 2nd Anniversary Union Day Exhibition and Festivities opened
YANGON, 7 Feb - A ceremony to open the 52nd Anniversary Union Day Exhibition and Festivities was held at Yangon Command sports ground on Yangon-Insein Road in Hline Township, Yangon West District, this morning, attended by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay.
Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, officials, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils, members of cultural troupes and Dawei cultural troupe of Taninthayi Division who are here to attend the 52nd Anniversary Union Day flag hoisting ceremony and Union Day reception and dinner, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross, Fire Brigade, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, teachers, students, band troupe of Sangyoung Township Basic Education High School No 2 and guests.
Mayor U Ko Lay formally opened the exhibition and festivities.
Later, Minister Brig-Gen Abel, Mayor U Ko Lay and Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt viewed the Union Day photo show and shops.

(4) Heroin seized in North Okkalapa, Shwepyitha Townships
YANGON, 7 Feb - A combined team comprising members of local intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, lay in waiting at the head of Thunanda Street, Zaminzwe Ward, North Okkalapa on 17 January and nabbed Maung Sai Shwe Yi Oo, 20, son of U Shwe Ni of No 502, Sabai Street, Extensive Htawunbe Ward, the same township together with 13.27 g of heroin.
Upon further investigation, the team also arrested U Shwe Ni (father of the culprit), 50, son of U Pho Nyunt and Kalar (a) Maung Oo, son of U Khon of No 62 F, Kanthaya Myothit, Mandalay, who were involved in drugs trafficking.
On further investigation, the team which was waiting in Ward 10, Shwepyitha, on 21 January and apprehended Thein Aung, 41, son of U Tun San of No 604 B, Yadanathiri Street, of the same ward and Myint Khaing, 28, son of U Nyunt Hla of No 606 A, of the same ward together with 67.16 g of heroin.
Action is being taken against the five according to law.

(5) 148 members resign from Ngazun Township NLD
YANGON, 7 Feb - One hundred and forty-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ngazun Township, Sagaing Division.
One hundred and forty-eight members of Ngazun Township NLD, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Ngazun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 29 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6) 22 members resign from Mindon Township NLD
YANGON, 7 Feb - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Mindon Township, Sagaing Division.
Twenty-two members of Mindon Township NLD, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Mindon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 25 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7) Over K 164m donated for Shwedagon Pagoda Htidaw Renovation
YANGON, 7 Feb - The Shwedagon Pagoda's Htidaw Renovation Exhibition continued for the 19th day at Chanthagyi Tazaung from 8 am to 8 pm today.
The exhibition was crowded with monks, lay people and tourists. They paid respects to the Htidaw and donated cash and jewellery towards its funds.
Donations up to date amounted to 15,888 items of jewellery weighing 36,995.1 grams, over 34.32 viss of gold, K 164,447,423 and 975 FECs, US$ 784, Singapore $ 121 and 1,305 Yuan, 1,695 Bahts, Canadian $ 23, Malaysian Ringgits 102, Korean Won 28,000 and 45,600 Indonesian Rupiah and Yen 4,100.
The exhibition continues from 8 am to 8 pm daily till 28 February.

(8) Artistes will stage Anyeints, songs at National Theatre on 13, 14 Feb
YANGON, 7 Feb - The 52nd Union Day Entertainment Sub-committee will present traditional dances at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Street on 13 and 14 February.
The committee will also present Anyeint troupes of Yangon Division which got gold medals in Myawady Anyeint Competitions and modem and classical songs entertainment.
The entertainment will include two Anyeint troupes-Shwemyinmo Anyeint and Shwelamin Anyeint.
A-1 Soe Myint's modem band will present modem and classical songs. Vocalists are U Min Naung, U Maung Maung Gyi, Sandaya Chit Swe, Sandaya Hla Htut, Aung Yin, Yan Aung, Tin Tin Mya, Khin Nyunt Yi, Htar, Cho Pyone, Yi Yi Thant, Nwe Yin Win, May Sweet and Ni Ni Win Shwe.
The entertainment will begin at 7 pm daily. Admission is K 800, K 600 and K 400. Yangon Division All Private Bus Lines Control Committee, Road Transport, Thanmyanthu and Nyein-chanyay bus lines will put buses on special runs to ensure smooth transportation.

(9) Commander of North-West Command opens three repaved streets in Monywa
YANGON, 7 Feb - The repaved Neikban Street at Ayethaya Ward, Theindaw Street at Phayagyi Ward, Bayintnaung and Zawtika Streets at Yankin Ward in Monywa Township were put back to use at the respective venues on 5 February morning.
Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, chairman and members of District Peace and Development Council, officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association Red Cross, Fire Brigade and local people were present on the occasion.
The commander gave a speech.
The commander and officials later inspected the streets.

(10) Minister inspects extension of runway at Kawthoung Airport, catering unit at Yangon Airport
YANGON, 7 Feb - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected soil condition for extension of Kawthoung Airport runway this morning.
The minister gave instructions on survey and soil testing for the extension site.
Then, the minister, accompanied by Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than and officials, inspected arrangements for opening of the catering unit of Myanmar LSG Lufthansa Service Limited near the Yangon International Airport.
The unit was jointly set up by Directorate of Civil Aviation and Myanmar LSG Lufthansa Service Limited.
The minister fulfilled the requirements.

(11) Cultivation of oil crops inspected in Wundwin, Pyawbwe
YANGON, 7 Feb - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and members of Agriculture Supervisory Committee inspected chilli farms in Myittha Township on 5 February.
The commander and party inspected plans for cultivation of summer paddy, nurseries and irrigation from Kinda canal and land preparation in Wundwin Township, cultivation of sunflower and beans and pulses, arrangements for cultivation of summer paddy, irrigation and triple cropping in Pyawbwe Township and arrangements for cultivation of summer paddy and irrigation in Yamethin Township.
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint and Commander of No 99 LID Col Htay Oo went to Meiktila Industrial Zone.
Chairman of Meiktila District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Myo Myint reported on allotment of plots, power supply and running of work.
Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint fulfilled the requirements.

(12) Commander inspects cultivation of summer paddy in Kyaunggon and Thabaung Townships
YANGON, 7 Feb - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann, accompanied by officials and staff officers inspected onion patch near Mandalaygon Village of Phayachaung Village-Tract in Kangyidaunk Township on 6 February.
Deputy General Manager of Myanma Agriculture Service U Ohn Than and officials reported on growing of onion, Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Tun Win on cultivation of 96,000 acres of summer paddy and extended cultivation of 5,000 acres of summer paddy in coming year, Director of Irrigation Department U Tin Aung on reclamation of vacant, fallow and virgin land and availability of water for double cropping.
The commander fulfilled the requirements on regional development. He then inspected reclamation of wetlands in Kyaunggon and Thabaung Townships.
