(1) New modern terminal of Kawthoung Airport commissioned into service

YANGON, 6 Feb - The new modern terminal building of Kawthoung Airport of the Department of Civil Aviation of the Ministry of Transport was put into service today, attended by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye.

At the auspicious times, General Maung Aye formally unveiled the new terminal's stone plaque.

Afterwards, Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Chairman of Andaman Club Co Ltd Mr Vikrom Aisiri formally opened the terminal.

Commander Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung spoke about the new modern terminal of Kawthoung Airport built in accord with the government's aim for smooth and convenient transport and emergence of a new modern airport terminal in a crucial border town Kawthoung.

In his address, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe said the original Kawthoung Airport was just a small one used for military purpose during the World War II, and it was rebuilt in 1959 to become an airport with a 4,200 feet long and 50 feet wide runway, and the reconstruction work finished in 1963, and the runway could be used by 28,000 lb planes.

In 1970, the runway was reconstructed with stone and asphalt, and since 1975, it had been safe enough for the landing of 45,000 lb Fokker F-27 carriers, he said and added that reconstruction of the present runway to become 6,000 feet long and 150 feet wide started on 12 December 1992 and could be put into service since 24 December 1998. The cost for rebuilding of the runway was K 433.83 million.

(2) General Maung Aye inspects progress in Kawthoung

YANGON, 6 Feb - Vice Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, together with Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State Peace and Development Council, the ministers and officials, yesterday left here for Kawthoung, Taninthayi Division, by Tatmadaw aircraft.

General Maung Aye and party were welcomed at Kawthoung Airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Taninthayi Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Coastal Region Command Headquarters Maj-Gen Thura Thiha Thura Sit Maung, Commandant of National Defence College Maj-Gen San Aung, Taninthayi Naval Region Command Headquarters Commodore Soe Myint, departmental heads and officials of Kawthoung District and Township officials.

General Maung Aye went to the regional battalion in Kawthoung and met senior military officers, departmental officials and national entrepreneurs who accompanied him at Bayintnaung Hall.

He discussed the role of private entrepreneurs in cooperation with the State for development in Taninthayi region, rice sufficiency in the region and extended cultivation of oil palm and the need to build a modern nation in cooperation between the State, the people and the Tatmadaw.

The General and party inspected progress of Kawthoung. They also inspected measures taken for making Bayintnaung Hill beautiful and pleasant. They posed for souvenir photo in front of Bayintnaung statue.

The Secretary-2 yesterday met departmental officials of Kawthoung district and township service personnel of non-governmental organizations, entrepreneurs and towns elders at Myitzuthaka Hall.

The Secretary-2 explained the objective of the visit of General Maung Aye, tasks to be implemented for development of Taninthayi Division in accord with climate and geographical conditions and participation of national entrepreneurs in cultivation of oil palm, rubber and perennial plants on commercial basis.

(3) Union Day delegates arrive from States and Divisions

YANGON, 6 Feb - The Union Day delegates of States and Divisions arrived here by train and by air today to attend the 52nd Anniversary Union Day Ceremony.

At 7 am, five Union Day delegates from Shan State (North) Union Solidarity and Development Association led by U Khin Aung arrived at Yangon Central Railway Station and 29 delegates led by U P Maung Soe of Kayah State USDA arrived at Yangon International Airport at 10.45 am today.

Similarly, 34 Union Day delegates led by U Ngon Won of Chin State, 45 Union Day delegates of Rakhine State led by U Aung Kyaw Than and 30 delegates of Taninthayi Division led by U Ko Ko Gyi arrived at Yangon International Airport this afternoon.

(4) Lashio communication station, Lashio-Muse digital microwave link put into service

YANGON, 6 Feb - A communication station of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications was opened in Lashio on 2 February.

The opening ceremony was attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, senior military officers, divisional, district and township authorities and departmental officials and town elders.

In his address, the Commander spoke about the tasks for development of the communication sector in accord with the 12 national objectives being implemented for emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin also explained the postal and public telephone services to be carried out in Lashio and also dealt with the communication services all over the country and in Shan State.

Afterwards, the Commander and the minister formally opened the station.

Lashio-Muse digital microwave new link was commissioned into service on 4 February.

The opening ceremony held in Muse was attended by Commander Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo, Minister Brig-Gen Win Tin, local authorities and departmental officials and town elders.

The Commander and the Minister formally opened the new digital microwave link.

Of the nine microwave stations covered by Lashio Muse microwave link, seven have been built.

The Commander and the Minister also inspected microwave stations, auto-telephone exchange and radio telegraph office in Lashio, Muse, Kutkai, Hsenwi, Hsipaw and Kyaukme.

(5) Commander inspects factories in Ayeyawady Division

YANGON, 6 Feb - Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and officials inspected No-4 plywood factory of Myanma Timber Enterprise in Pathein on 4 February.

Manager U Kyaw Myint reported on production, local sale and export and staff affairs.

The commander gave instructions on exceeding targets, work-site safety, fire prevention and minimizing wastage and loss.

The commander inspected No-3 Saw Mill of MTE. He then went to Glass Factory where factory manager U Aye Thein reported on production, sale and agriculture and repair of furnace.

The commander and party inspected cultivation of summer paddy in Zinpyongon Village tract. About 1,380,000 acres of summer paddy have been cultivated in Ayeyawady Division.

(6) Minister inspects cooperative work in Mandalay Division

YANGON, 6 Feb - Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San and Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko inspected import substitute products of cooperatives industrial zone in Mandalay yesterday morning.

First, Minister U Aung San and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko inspected farm and industrial equipment of Seinban Industrial Producers Cooperative Society at No 337 on Seinban Road in Maha Aungmyay Township.

Chairman of the Board of Directors U Kyaw Win and officials reported to the minister and the deputy minister on commodity production of the society.

The minister attended to their needs.

The minister urged the officials for products of the society to be advertised at cooperatives festival, trade fair and industrial exhibition for the development of local industrial sector and the society to participate in import substitute products and boosting production work of the State.

Seinban Industrial Producers Cooperative Society produces various kind of machines including pumps, transplanting machines, harvesting machines, air compressors, concrete mixers and others for industrial, construction and agriculture sectors.

Minister U Aung San and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko went to Dairy Factory of Mandalay Division Cooperative Syndicate on Yangon-Mandalay Road in Tagundaing Htaingon Ward in Pyigyi Tagun Township where they inspected production of condensed milk and milk powder and arrangement for product of fresh milk.

(7) Myanmar delegation leaves for Singapore

YANGON, 6 Feb - Myanmar Education Delegation led by Minister for Education U Than Aung left here by air this morning for Singapore to attend the 34th South-East Asian Ministers of Education Council Conference to be held from 7 to 9 February in Singapore.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Ambassador of Singapore Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow and officials.

Other members of the delegation were Director-General U Myo Nyunt of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) and Deputy Director-General (Training) Daw Hla Kyu of Education Planning and Training Department.

(8) Dhammacariya, Pathamabyan certificates to be presented on 18 Feb

YANGON, 6 Feb - Under the leadership of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold Maha Convocation at Maha Pasana Cave at 1 pm on 18 February to present titles and certificates to the members of the Sangha - 403 Dhammacariya, four Dhammacariya (credit), 12 Pathamabyan (credit), 13 Nikaya (credit), first, second and third persons in Abhidhama and Visuddhimagga passing Sangha.

A total of 690 members of Sangha including members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee will attend the ceremony.

(9) Commander of South East Command meets officials in Kya-in-Seikkyi

YANGON, 6 Feb - Chairman of Mon State Peace and Development Council Commander of South-East Command Maj-Gen Myint Aung met officials of Township Peace and Development Council, departmental officials at Kya-in-Seikkyi Township on 4 February.

Present on the occasion were Lt-Col Tin Shwe and Tatmadaw officials of Kyain-Seikkyi Station, Secretary and members of Kya-in-Seikkyi Township Peace and Development Council, township level departmental officials, members of Auxiliary Fire Brigade and the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

The commander explained about the progress of education, social and economic sectors of the State and cultivation of paddy, corn, sugarcane, oil crops and kitchen crops.

Departmental officials reported to the commander on progress of their work and future programme.

The commander attended to their needs.

(10) London Myanmar Open reviewed

YANGON, 6 Feb - A coordination meeting on reviewing London Myanmar Open golf tournament held at City Golf Resort of Yangon City Development Committee from 28 to 31 January and upgrading Bago Hanthawady Golf Course was held at the Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium 1 this morning.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, OSD at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Advisers to the Ministry of Sports Col Ngo Ciin Pau and U Saw Gilbert Gyi and officials.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win made a speech on the occasion.

Brig-Gen Win Hlaing reviewed the London Myanmar Open and explained upgrading of Hanthawady Golf Course and preparations of Myanmar golfers for XX SEA Games.

A general round of discussions then followed.

Officials present gave suggestions on the discussions.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks by the minister.

(11) Foodstuff, personal goods donated for parade company

YANGON, 6 Feb - Hailing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, four well-wishers donated foodstuff and personal goods for the parade company of Directorate of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at No 656 Workshop Company (electrical) in Botahtaung Township today.

Director of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Brig-Gen Aung Hlaing, accepted the donations.

The donations were:  120 teak boxes worth K 250,000 by Myanmar Faw Motor Company, one drum set worth K 200,000 by China Dongfeng Motor Export and Import Corporation, soap and tooth paste worth over K 75,000 by Kyaw Tha Company and rice and edible oil worth about K 60,000 by Samsung Corporation.

(12) F&R wins championship trophies of all Premier Div soccer tourneys for '97-'98

YANGON, 6 Feb - Ministry of Finance and Revenue won the championship shield of 1997-98 Premier Division Bogyoke Aung San Shield Knock-out Soccer Championship after scoring a 5-2 win over Yangon City Development Committee in the final at Thuwunna Youth Sports Training Centre this evening.

Among the spectators were Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Secretary of Myanmar Olympic Committee Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, officials, President of Myanmar Football Federation OSD at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Commandant of Institute of Defence Services Self-defense and Sports Col Sein Tin Win and guests.

The Man of the Match Award went to striker Win Aung of Finance and Revenue.

After the match, the ceremony to present prizes to soccer teams which were first and second in soccer championships of first Division and Premier Division for 1997-98 soccer season was held.

Col Sein Tin Win presented prizes to First Division teams and Col Thaung Htaik Premier Division teams.

(13) YTU holds 31st convocation

YANGON, 6 Feb - The Yangon Technological University held its 31st convocation at Yangon University Convocation Hall this morning.

Present on the occasion were Rector U Nyi Hla Nge, members of Management and Education Boards, graduates and relatives.

The rector conferred on 103 ME and MArch, nine MPhil, 36 post-graduate diploma, 688 BE and BArch graduates and 105 ME, MPhil and post-graduate diploma in absentia.

(14) 183 members resign from Pyapon Township NLD

YANGON, 6 Feb - One hundred and eighty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyapon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Fifty members of Pyapon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Pyapon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 6 December 1998 and 133 members followed suit on 8 December 1998, totaling 183, as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Similarly, 139 members of Dedaye Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to Dedaye Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 22 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
