(1)  Topmost central pivotal post hoisted and fixed on Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 4 Feb - A ceremony to convey and fix the topmost central pivotal post atop the Shwedagon Pagoda was held at the Museum Tazaung on the pagoda platform and at the Sunday Planetary Post this morning.

It was attended by State Peace and Development Council Chairman Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe's wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing and Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(2)  Secretary-1 attends meeting on implementation of projects with assistance of UN agencies in Myanmar

YANGON Feb - A coordination meeting on implementation of projects with the assistance of United Nations Development Programme and UN agencies in Myanmar was held in the meeting hall of the Office of Commander-in-Chief (Army) of the Ministry of Defence this afternoon, attended by Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minster for immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein and departmental officials.

(3)  Yen 50,000 Donated for Defence Services Physical Rehabilitation Hospital (300-bed)

YANGON Feb - Commandant Lt-Col Soe Than accepts Yen 50,000 donated for Defence Services Physical Rehabilitation Hospital (300-bed) by Mr Taiji Hosono and party of Japan through a representative of the Office of Strategic Studies on 4-2-99.

(4)  Minister inspects construction of new sugar mills

YANGON, 4 Feb - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin inspected construction of Yonseik Sugar Mill, which can crush 2,000 tons of sugarcane per day, in Aunglan Township, Magway Division, on 2 February.

Officials in charge reported on completed portions of the project.

The minister discussed test running of the mill.

He then inspected progress in installation of machines, urging officials work with seriousness and to lay down plans region-wise to get adequate amount of raw materials.

Later, he inspected Duringabo Sugar Mill Project in the township. As the project is completed, test run is soon to begin.

Measures should be taken to dispose waste materials systematically and to set up sugarcane plantations on tamed vacant, virgin and fallow lands in the region, he said.

At Duringabo Pumped-Water Station, where water is lifted from Ayeyawady River with large pumps for irrigation, the ,minister discussed supplying water to summer paddy fields.

The minister inspected implementing of Inngakhwa Sugar Mill in Paukkhaung Township.

In his meeting with departmental personnel and sugarcane farmers at the project, he explained national development undertakings, setting up of farm based industries, regional development tasks and granting of permits to entrepreneurs to reclaim vast areas of untamed land to boost agricultural produce.

Sugarcane farmers presented requirements.

The minister and party inspected inflow of water to South Nawin Dam, water supply and maintenance.

In the evening, the minister and party visited Nathmaw Pumped-Water Station in Shwedaung Township.

Officials of Water Resources Utilization Department explained supplying water to 8,000 acres of crops.

(5)  Amphetamine base powder seized in Monkoe

YANGON, 4 Feb - Members of the regional battalion stopped and searched a Beijing jeep A/81034, which was heading for Montaung, from Monkoe Shan State (North), on 16 January.

Out of five persons in the car, four managed to getaway, and driver Yan Shaing Lu, 19, son of U Yan Tat of No 5 ward, Monkoe, was arrested with 19 bags of Amphetamine base powder weighing 11.57 kilos.

Action is being taken against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(6)  Ministers discuss distribution, storage of cement

YANGON, 4 Feb - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, together with Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, arrived at the office of Aungzeya Bridge Project of Public Works in Insein Township today.

With the officials concerned, they discussed arrival and storage of cement for the project there.

After reports on use, storage and requirement of cement presented by Deputy Director U Nay Soe Naing and officials, Minister U Aung Thaung gave instructions, saying the Ministry of Industry-1 is smoothly sending cement to the major projects in the country.

He advised officials concerned to inform the ministry about the required cement in advance so that the project will not be delayed and instructed them to systematically store and distribute cement to minimize loss and wastage

Afterwards, the ministers inspected the project.

On completion, the bridge will link Insein and Hlinethaya townships and will be 1,154 metres in length.

The project commenced on 1 February 1997.

(7)  Commander inspects groundnut farms in Amarapura

YANGON, 4 Feb - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, together with Chairman of Mandalay City Development Committee Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi and officials, inspected cold season groundnut farms near Shangalaykyun Village, Amarapura Township, on 2 February morning.

Then. the commander and party proceeded to the work-site for building a new road, a section of Mandalay round the-town strand road, stretching from Shwege Village to Shwekyetyet in Amarapura Township.

The commander heard a report by Secretary of MCDC Col Aye Tun Shwe and officials on earthwork being undertaken with the use of machinery.

The commander gave instructions on the works.

(8)  Day Reception and Accommodation Sub-committee meets

YANGON, 4 Feb - The 52nd Anniversary Union Day Reception and Accommodation Sub-committee was held its second co-ordination meeting at No 1 Transit Centre (Bayintnaung) this afternoon.

Present were Chairman of the Sub-committee Commander of No 4 Military Region Col Myo Myint and members and officials.

Col Myo Myint made a speech on the occasion.

Officials of the various work groups reported to the meeting on their activities.

Col Myo Myint attended to their needs and inspected hostels, messing hall and clinics for 52nd Anniversary Union Day delegates.

(9)  229 members resign from Nyaungdon Township NLD

YANGON, 4 Feb - Two hundred and twenty-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Two hundred and twenty-nine members of Nyaungdon Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Nyaungdon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 23 December 1998 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  79 members resign from Myitkyina Township NLD

YANGON, 4 Feb - Seventy-nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myitkyina Township, Kachin State.

Seventy-nine members of Myitkyina Township NLD, Kachin State, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Myitkyina Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  Minister meets Executive Director of Resource Strategies (Asia) Ltd

YANGON, 4 Feb - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung met Executive Director of Resource Strategies (Asia) Ltd Mr Brett Melzer who called at the MIC Office at 4 pm today.

Present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration.
