(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Sri Lanka

YANGON, 4 Feb - On the occasion of the anniversary of the National Day of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, which falls on 4 February 1999, His Excellency Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to Her Excellency Mrs Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

(2)  Secretary-l receives President of Itochu Corporation

YANGON, 3 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received President of Itochu Corporation Mr Uichiro Niwa and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 8.30 am today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3)  Myanmar to host 13th Meeting of ASEAN Labour Ministers

YANGON, 3 Feb - To coordinate hosting of the 13th Meeting of ASEAN Labour Ministers, a meeting was held this morning in the meeting hall of Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army), the Ministry of Defence, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said after Myanmar became a member of the ASEAN, it is continuously participating in ASEAN meetings and activities such as ministerial meetings, senior officials meetings and regional meetings including the ASEAN Summit.

Meetings of the ASEAN are being held in the member countries in turn and Myanmar is also hosting the meetings.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Attach Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and guests.

(4)  Co-ord meeting held for full-capacity operation of railways and inland water transport services

YANGON, 3 Feb - The Supervisory Committee for Operating Works of Myanma Railways and Inland Water Transport at Full Capacity held work coordination meeting No 4/99 in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Transport this afternoon.

Chairman of the Supervisory Committee for Ensuring Secure and Smooth Transport Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the meeting and made a speech.

Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and department heads and officials.

(5)  Deputy Prime Minister receives President & CEO of Itochu Corporation

YANGON, 3 Feb - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received President & CEO of Itochu Corporation Mr Uichiro Niwa and party who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Also present at the call were Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials.

They discussed investment opportunities in Myanmar.

(6)  Stimulant tablets seized in Taunggyi

YANGON, 3 Feb - A combined team comprising members of regional intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the house of Han Mein, 44, son of U Lon Kaw at 109 in Ward 3 in Ayethaya Myothit, Taunggyi Township on 27 January.

They seized 15,200 stimulant tablets from Ham Mein and his wife Ma Ngwe Kyi.

Action is being taken against them according to law.

(7)  Commander of Central Command inspects CICS (Upper Myanmar)

YANGON, 3 Feb - Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, accompanied by PyinOoLwin Station Commander Brig-Gen Moe Hein, Tactical Operations Commander Col Tun Kyi and officials, inspected Central Institute of Civil Service (Upper Myanmar) and central training centre of Myanmar Police Force near Zeebingyi Village in PyinOoLwin on 1 February.

Rector of CICS (Upper Myanmar) Col Aung Hsan Win reported on construction, arrival of trainees, measures taken for accommodation and health care for trainees and water supply.

The commander gave instructions and inspected the main hall, hostels and messing hall.

The commander inspected construction of parade ground and management buildings.

Principal Police Brig-Gen Tin Soe reported on construction, preparations for graduation parade and others.

(8)  GDP evaluation course No 1/99 concludes

YANGON, 3 Feb - The conclusion ceremony of Gross Domestic Products  evaluation course No 1/99 was held at Planning Department this evening.

Present were Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, directors-general and officials of the ministry.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun made a speech on the occasion.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun presented certificates to the 40 trainees of State/Division and District Planning Department Offices.

(9)  Minister for Energy inspects Aphyauk natural gas field

YANGON, 3 Feb - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, accompanied by officials, arrived at Aphyauk natural gas field in Zalun-Taikkyi Township in Ayeyawady Division yesterday afternoon.

At the meeting hall of the field, General Manager U Win Kyaing reported to the minister on production of gas, existing wells and new well to be drilled.

The minister gave instructions and inspected existing and new wells, storage of condensate and supply of gas.

The minister and party gas-powered compressors in the field.

Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi also inspected water pumping project being undertaken by Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise in cultivation of summer paddy in Ywatha Village.

(10)  Minister inspects production of refined sugar at Nawaday Sugar Mill

YANGON, 3 Feb - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, accompanied by departmental officials, arrived at the construction site of Okkan Sugar Mill in Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division, on 1 February morning.

The minister met officials of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise and Township Departmental officials there.

Managing Director of Myanma Sugarcane Enterprise and officials reported to the minister on construction of the mill, preparations for running the mill, arrangements for opening of sugarcane purchase centre and extended cultivation of sugarcane in Taikkyi, Thayawady and Letpadan Townships.

The minister inspected progress of the mill and installation of machines.

(11)  23 members resign from Myingyan Township NLD

YANGON, 3 Feb - Twenty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myingyan Township, Mandalay Division.

Twenty-three members of Myingyan Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Myingyan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 18 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12)  51 members resign from Yenangyoung Township NLD

YANGON, 3 Feb - Fifty-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yenangyoung Township, Magway Division.

Fifty-one members of Yenangyoung Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Yenangyoung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
