(2) Dagon BEHS-2, Latha BEHS-1 open Multi-Media Classrooms
YANGON, Feb 1 - The ceremonies to open Multi-Media Classrooms at Dagon Basic Education High School-2 and Latha Basic Education High School-1 were held at the respective schools today, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(3) Means sought for development of archipelagic townships
YANGON, 1 Feb - A meeting was held at the Ministry of Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement today to coordinate means for development archipelagic townships in Yangon, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi Divisions with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
Commander of Panmawady Naval Region Command Commodore Myint Swe and Commander of Taninthayi Naval Region Command Commodore Soe Myint reported on undertakings of regional development works for Hainggyi Island, Katan Island and Heinze Island in coordination with the respective Military Commands and requirements concerning fire prevention measures, fire engines, fire fighting equipment and manpower.
Minister for Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone explained assistance to be rendered by his ministry and cooperation of the regional people.

(4) 119.2 kilos of ephedrine powder seized
YANGON, 1 Feb - Members of local intelligence unit, acting on information, searched the house of Aung Sein, 32, son of U Aung Tun of No 1/2, 9th Street (between 76-77 Streets), Block 22, East Amarahtani Ward, Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay and arrested him with 23 packets of ephedrine powder weighing 119.2 kilos to be used in making stimulants.
Upon further information they arrested two brothers Kyaw Nyein and Kyaw Aye, sons of U Mya Thin, involved in drug trafficking.
On investigation, it was learnt that the powder was purchased from India and brought to Mandalay via Tamu by various ways and means.
Action is being taken against the three according to law.

(5) Union Day billboards unveiled in Yangon
YANGON, 1 Feb - Bill boards hailing the 52nd Anniversary Union Day were posted in front of Yangon Railway Station and Aung San Stadium in Mingala Taungnyunt Township, at the corner of Hledan and Bayintnaung roads in Kamayut Township and at the corner of Yangon-Pyay Road and Airport Entrance Road in Insein Township today.
The Union Day billboard which was posted in front of Yangon Central Railway Station and Aung San Stadium in Mingala Taungnyunt, Yangon East District, was unveiled by Chairman of District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Aye Lwin and Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Hla Myint.
Present on the occasion were local authorities, students, band troupes, teachers, departmental personnel, members of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross, Fire Brigade and Myanmar Police Force and the ward people.
Chairman of Kamayut Township Peace and Development Council U Nyan Lin unveiled the billboard posted at the corner of Hledan and Bayintnaung roads in Kamayut Township.

YANGON, 1 Feb - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received UNESCO Assistant Director-General Mr Daniel Janicot who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 11 am today.
Present on the occasion together with Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Chairman of Myanmar UNESCO National Commission Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Secretary of Myanmar-UNESCO National Commission Rector of Institute of Education U Han Tin.

(7) Diplomats on tour to observe development projects
YANGON, 1 Feb - The Ambassadors, Charges d'Affaires ai and their wives of foreign embassies and party, headed by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and wife, left here by air for Mandalay on 29 January on a tour to observe regional development projects.
From Mandalay, they proceeded to Thaphanseik Dam in Kyunhla Township by helicopter.
The project manager and Minister U Win Aung explained to them the salient points about the project.
They toured the project site in cars before going on to Sinphyushin Bridge (Chindwin).
At the project site, Secretary of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Col Hla Ngwe and Project Superintending Engineer U Win Tin hosted lunch in their honour.
They arrived back in Mandalay at 4.15 pm and visited Mandalay Hill.
Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint and wife hosted dinner in their honour at Nanmyo Guest House.
On 30 January, they visited Myanansankyaw Shwenandaw in Mandalay, Bagan NyaungU, Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk) Project and Mone Creek Dam.
They flew back to Bagan NyaungU by helicopter and there, they visited the Lacquerware Institute and Bagan Archaeological Museum.
Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw and wife hosted dinner in their honour at Bagan Hotel.
Yesterday, they visited Paunglaung Multi-Purpose Dam Project, South Nawin Dam, Nawadei Ayeyawady River Bridge at Pyay, and Bo Myat Tun Bridge (Nyaungdon), and observed the project for reclamation of the wetlands in Zibyukyun area.
They arrived back in Yangon yesterday evening.

YANGON, 1 Feb - Hailing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day, well-wishers U Soe Tint (Dentist) and wife Daw Khin Aye Nyo (Dentist) this morning donated first aid kits for members of Red Cross Brigades of archipelagic townships in Taninthayi and Ayeyawady divisions at the Office of Defence Services Museum and Historical Research Institute and it was attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

YANGON, Feb 1 - Forty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taungdwingyi Township, Magway Division.
Forty-three members of Taungdwingyi Township NLD, Magway Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Taungdwingyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 10 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 1 Feb - Thirty members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Yamethin Township, Mandalay Division.
Thirty members of Yamethin Township NLD, Mandalay Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Yamethin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 5 January 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12) Minister inspects gas test well
YANGON, 1 Feb - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi inspected Nyaungdon Test Well No-1 near Hsamalauk village, Nyaungdon Township, Ayeyawady Division, this morning.
Accompanied by officials, the minister heard a report on drilling of the wells laying of pipes and the drilling period presented by a mining engineer and geological condition of the area of the test well and its potential by Managing Director of Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise U Kyaw Nyein.
Greater efforts must be made for completion of the drilling within the projected period, stressed the minister.
He then inspected progress in drilling and machinery.
Drilling began on 27 January with EMSCO machine. The well will be drilled down to 12,000 feet. If natural gas is found successfully, more development wells will be drilled in the area.
