(1)  Secretary-1 tours Kyauktan, discusses tasks for regional development

YANGON, 31 Jan - A new building of TamanU Basic Education Middle School built by the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction in Thanlyin-Kyauktan Region Development Project area was inaugurated today in conjunction with the ceremony to hand over the related document on the new building and holding.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, distinct, township and ward authorities, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of the School Board of Trustees and the Parent Teacher Association, the school head and teachers, well-wishers and guests.

(2)  Secretary-l lays cornerstone for construction of Thathana Beikhmandawgyi in Kyauktan

YANGON, 31 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the cornerstone laying ceremony for the construction of Thathana Beikhmandawgyi in Kyauktan Township, Yangon Division, this morning.

Also present on the occasion were the ministers, the deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of the District and Township Peace and Development Councils, departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and donor U Aung Din and family of Phakant, Kachin State.

Staff Officer of Yangon Division Religious Affairs Department U San Thin Hlaing read the programme of the ceremony.

At the auspicious time, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt laid the nawarat gems casket at the centre of the foundation.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and well-wisher U Aung Din laid the cornerstones at the designated places.

The Secretary-1 then planted a plaque on the foundation.

The Secretary-1 and party sprinkled scented water on the foundation.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party performed the ritual of gold and silver showers.

Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected arrangements for the construction of the Beikhmandawgyi.

(3)  Secretary-2 attends opening of briquette factory of Ministry of Forestry

YANGON, 31 Jan - A ceremony to open the briquette factory of the Ministry of Forestry was held at the factory in the compound of the Forest Department this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min and senior military officers, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Deputy Ministers for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint and Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and departmental officials, employees of the Forest Department, entrepreneurs, members of Insein Township Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross and guests.

(4)  Wang Ter-Chang wins London-Myanmar Open Golf Tourney

YANGON, 31 Jan - London-Myanmar Open Golf Tournament continued for the final day at Yangon City Golf Resort this evening.

Wang Ter-Chang of Chinese Taipei won first and Koichi Nogami of Japan and Frankie Minoza of the Philippines second.

President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing presented prizes to winners.

Wang Ter-Chang got US$ 32,300 and Koichi Nogami and Frankie Minoza got US$ 17,330 each.

Kyi Hla Han of Myanmar placed ten and received US $ 3,835.

Minister for Communications, Post and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Chairman of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, General Secretary U Aung Kyi and executives, Director of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar U Aung San and golf enthusiasts watched the tournament.

(5)  Commander of Yangon Command inspects farming at Htantabin

YANGON, 31 Jan - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, accompanied by Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and officials, inspected agriculture work and met farmers in Htantabin Township this morning.

The commander inspected flow of water in canals of Htowachaung sluice gate and dredging of canals with the use of machinery and cultivation of summer paddy.

YANGON, 31 Jan - One hundred and ninety one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Kangyidaunt Township, Ayeyawady Division.

One hundred and ninety-one members of Kangyidaunt Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kangyidaunt Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 20-12-98 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7)  Minister for Transport inspects Aunglan, Thayet, Pyay waterways

YANGON, 31 Jan - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Pe Than and officials, inspected development work of Magway Port and sitting-up in the area.

Head of Magway Division Water Resources and Waterways Development Department U Aung Htut reported to the minister on functions of the department.

The minister, the deputy minister and party also inspected Minbu and Magway Z-craft jetties, waterways of Minhla port, that between Aunglan and Thayet, Thayet port, loading and unloading of cement bags onto the vessel at Thayet Cement Factory port bound for Mandalay International Airport, waterways of Pyalo and waterways leading to Pyay.

(8)  MIDB, family of Zaygwet Journal set up trust funds for social associations

YANGON, 31 Jan - To mark publishing of the 100th Zaygwet Journal, the Welfare Committee of Myanma Industrial Development Bank (MIDB) and Zaygwet Journal served breakfast to aged persons at the Hninzigon Home for the Aged on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road here this morning in conjunction with a ceremony to set up trust funds for social associations.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister for Commerce Col Kyaw San, heads of department, officials of MIDB, Zaygwet Journal and Hninzigon Home for the Aged and guests.

At the ceremony, MIDB Managing Director U Aung Chit explained matters relating to setting up of the trust fund for social associations.

Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Deputy Minister Col Kyaw San and MIDB officials set up funds for the Hninzigon Home for the Aged (Bahan), Children's Home (Bahan Shwegondaing), Tiger Parahita (Kamayut), Jivitadhana Sangha Hospital (Bahan) and Myanmar Christian Association Following of the Blind (Thamaing Khawe-chan).

Next, Chairman of Hninzigon Home for the Aged U Maung Tin spoke words of thanks.

(9)  16 members resign from Loikaw Township NLD

YANGON, 31 Jan - Sixteen members resigned from National League for Democracy of Loikaw Township, Kayah State.

Sixteen members of Loikaw Township NLD, Kayah State, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Loikaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 31-12-98 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  Yangon City Mayor U Ko Lay inspects farming works

YANGON, 31 Jan - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by officials this morning arrived at Udo Plantation being undertaken by YCDC in Taikyi Township, Yangon Division.

They were welcomed by Chairman of Land Reclamation Work Committee Col Thaung Wai, Secretary Head of Administration department U Myint Swe and officials.

Chairman of Land Reclamation Work Committee Col Thaung Wai reported on reclamation of 1,500 acres of fallow and virgin land with heavy machinery in Kya-in fields, putting late paddy, summer paddy, edible oil crops and pulses and beans under 3,000 acres of land in Udo and Kya-in fields and putting kitchen crops such as onions, chilli and potatoes under the remaining acres of land.

Yangon City Mayor U Ko Lay gave instructions on obtaining pedigree seeds of paddy and farm machinery, preventing loss and wastage of fuel oil and making energetic efforts for ensuring successful cultivation and land reclamation.

(11)  Deputy Minister inspects construction works

YANGON, 31 Jan - Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint inspected construction of Kawkyaik-Kawparan-Zarthabyin Road on 28 January morning.

In the afternoon, he arrived at Gyaing (Zarthabyin) Bridge Project and gave necessary instructions.

Afterwards, he met engineers of Kayin State in the briefing hall of the project and clarified the guidance of the Head of State.

On 29-1-99, he inspected Zarthabyin-Mawlamyine-Thaton Road and construction site of Yinnyein Bridge in Paung Township.

(12)  94th Convocation of YU continues

YANGON, 31 Jan - The 94th Convocation of Yangon University continued at the Convocation Hall of YU for the second day today.

In the morning session, Rector Dr Soe Yin conferred MA (Psychology), MSc (Maths), BA (Hons) (Psychology), BA (Hons) (Philos), BA (History), BA (Psychology), BA (Philos) and BSc (Maths) degrees on 759 graduates.

In the afternoon session, the rector conferred MSc (Physics), Diplomas on Applied Physics, BA (Hons) (Myanmar), BA(Hons) (IR), BA (Hons) (Anthro), BA (Hons) (Oriental Studies), BSc (Hons) (Zoo), BA (Psychology), BA (Eco), BA (Philos), BA (Geography), BA (Myanmar), BA (History) and BSc (IC) degrees on 834 graduates.
