(1)  Deputy Prime Minister meets President of Esperant Co Ltd

YANGON, 27 Jan - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met President of Esperant Co Ltd Mr Kazuoki Inoue and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

Also present at the call were Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials of the Ministry of Forestry.

They discussed matters related to construction of a golf resort in Myanmar.

(2)  Co-ordination meeting on ensuring active participation of media in drug education held

YANGON, 27 Jan - A coordination meeting on ensuring active participation of media in drug education was held at the meeting hall of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon on Wingaba Street in Bahan Township this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Drug Abuse Control Work Committees Supervisory Committee and Chairman of Printers and Publishers Registration Board Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, directors-general and managing directors, officials of Myanmar Police Force, department of Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control, Drug Treatment and Research Centre(Yangon) and Myanmar Anti-Narcotics Association, media persons, publishers and guests.

Deputy Director-General of MPF Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun reported on narcotic drug eradication work.

Authors Dr Tin Tun Oo, Maung Yin Kyaw, Tekkatho Sein Tin and U Myint Tun Oo and printer and publisher U Myint Maung took part in the discussion.

(3)  Minister attends ceremony of submitting USDA membership applications in Ngaphe, Minhla

YANGON, 27 Jan - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt attended the ceremony to submit membership applications of Union Solidarity and Development Association at Padan Village in Ngaphe Township yesterday morning.

USDA Organizers from Padan, Hsinchidaing, Chaungphyu, Myitphya and Yintshi Villages presented 5,099 membership applications to Secretary of Magway Division USDA U Thwin Lin and Secretary of Minbu District USDA U Kyaw Thu Oo.

Minister Col Thein Nyunt made a speech on the occasion.

A similar ceremony was held at Kantoke Village in Minhla Township.

The minister also attended the ceremony.

Organizer Kantoke Village USDA U Kyaw Tint presented 8,481 membership applications of Kantoke, Aukkai, Kanni, Kyaukpon, Nwale, Myaychar and Yayngan Villages to Secretary of Magway Division USDA U Thwin Lin.

Minister Col Thein Nyunt spoke on the occasion.

The minister met villagers and attended to their needs.

(4)  Accel International Co Ltd holds prize presentation ceremony of Canon Asia Pacific Photo Contest '97

YANGON, 27 Jan - Accel International Co Ltd held the presentation of awards of Canon Asia Pacific Photo Contest '97 and Official Launch of International Standard Service Centre for Canon Camera at Traders Hotel this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, heads of department of the ministry, Ambassador of Singapore to Myanmar Brig-Gen Patrick Choy Choong Tow, Managing Director of Accel International Co Ltd Mr Alvin Law, Managing Director of Canon Singapore, Pte Ltd Mr Kohtaro Miyagi and officials, prize winners, sale representatives and guests.

Mr Alvin Law extended greetings.

Then, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung presented prizes to Honourable Mention U Sein Maung and Commemorative winners U Thein Htay Aung and Ko Kyaw Lin (Hline).

Afterwards, MD of Canon Singapore Pte Ltd Mr Kohtaro Miyagi and General Manager Mr Howard Ozawa explained about the service centre and EOS 88 canon camera.

(5)  Minister meets official of Singapore International Foundation

YANGON, 27 Jan - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Mr Chen Chin Chi and party of Singapore International Foundation who called at his office at 8.30 am today.

They discussed matters related to conducting course on health of infant and safe delivery of mothers.

Also present at the call were Deputy Minister Professor Dr Mya Oo, directors-general of departments and officials under the Ministry.

(6)  Marching and military song competitions to be held

YANGON, 27 Jan - Marching and military song competitions will be organized by the Work Committee for Holding Poem and Literary Competitions in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day which falls on 27 March.

They include one open level competition in the marching song event and two levels-level 1 and level 2-in the military song competition.

Winners will be presented handsome prizes. The songs are to be composed featuring the national objectives, the objectives of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day and the 12 fine traditions of the Tatmadaw.

Competitors may send entries individually or in groups.

The entrants are to send their curriculum vitae and two passport photos.

Last date for sending entries for the composing competition was extended up to 10 February instead of 31 January, and the entries are to be sent to U Ko Ko Htwe, Secretary of the Committee, Myanma Radio and Television, Pyay Road.

(7)  General Administration Department holds meeting

YANGON, 27 Jan - General Administration Department held the third four monthly meeting for 1998 this afternoon in a meeting hall of GAD, addressed by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing.

The minister said GAD staff should thoroughly understand the internal and international political and economic changes and developments and should actively safeguard the interests of the nation and the people.

They should always strive to uplift their working power and ability, forming management committees at different levels in implementing the assigned duties; and they should discard colonial habits and should protect the people's interest with goodwill.

He urged them to uplift their morale and training and welfare activities and to participate with added momentum for the progress of the nation's agriculture.

Also present at the meeting were directors-general and deputy directors-general of departments under the ministry and directors and commissioners of GAD.

(8)  Blood donated to hail Armed Forces Day

YANGON, 27 Jan - Seventy-five members of Maubin Township Mibagonyi Association donated blood to patients warded at Military Hospital 2 today as a gesture hailing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day.

Present on the occasion were Commandant of MH-2 Col Min Naing and officials.

Col Min Naing expressed thanks to the donors and presented certificates of honour.

(9)  11 resign from Khayan Township NLD

YANGON, 27 Jan - A total of 11 members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Khayan Township, Yangon Division, on 1, 7 and 25 January.

Two members of Khayan Township NLD, Yangon Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Khayan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 1 January, five members on 7 January and four on 25 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10)  37 members resign from Sagaing Township NLD

YANGON, 27 Jan - Thirty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Sagaing Township, Sagaing Division, on 7 and 19 January 1999.

Twenty-seven members of Sagaing Township NLD, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Sagaing Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned on 7 January and 10 members on 19 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  1,012.5 gallons of ether seized in Kutkai

YANGON, 27 Jan - A combined team comprising, members of the regional battalion of the Tatmadaw and the intelligence unit, acting on information, combed the region covering Monkoe, Tarmoenye in Naungkham Camp Hill and Montaungba in Shan State (North) on 4 January.

At the map reference (P145613), the team found suspicious Trawler-G driven by San Aye, aged 30 son of U Aung Hme, from Panlot Village, Hseinwi Township, and stopped and searched it.

The team seized 225 five gallon plastic containers of ether totaling 1,012.5 gallons.

Kutkai Township Police Station opened the case, and is, taking action against him according to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(12)  Improvement of hospitals discussed

YANGON, 27 Jan - A meeting to discuss improvement of hospitals was held at on job training school for doctors in Dagon Township yesterday evening.

Present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung, the directors, the medical superintendents, officials and heads of Health Departments of 38 Townships.

Director-General Dr Wan Maung and those present discussed improvement of hospitals and sanitation work.

The deputy minister spoke of the need to be right treatment for hospital service is life saving work. He also spoke of the need to widely carry out environment affairs, personal hygiene and use of fly-proof latrines.
