(1)  State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to India

YANGON, 26 Jan - On the occasion of the anniversary of the Republic Day of India, which falls on 26 January 1999, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Mr Kocheril Raman Narayanan, President of the Republic of India.

YANGON, 26 Jan - On the occasion of the anniversary of Australia Day, 26 January 1999, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency the Honourable Sir William Deane, AC, KBE, Governor-General of Australia.

YANGON, 25 Jan - A coordination meeting on observance of the 52nd Anniversary Union Day was held at the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) today with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(4)  Secretary-l attends opening of new building for BEPS No 7 in Dawbon Township

YANGON, 25 Jan - A new building for Basic Education Primary School No 7 opened at the school in Yamonna Ward 2 in Dawbon Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental heads, members of District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department Col Thein Aung, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, members of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Township Education Officer, members of School Welfare Committee and PTA, towns-elders, the headmistress, teachers and schoolchildren.

Minister U Than Aung and Managing Director of Minami Construction U Maung Maung Myint formally opened the new building.

U Maung Maung Myint then reported on construction of the new building and presented related documents to Director-General Col Thein Aung.

U Maung Maung Myint and Daw Yin Min Maung Maung Myint presented K 100,000 for school fund and K 30,000 for uniforms of teachers to Headmistress Daw Aye Than.

In meeting with members of the School Welfare Committee, the headmistress and teachers, the Secretary-1 said three-storied BEPS has emerged and that on completion of Maha Bandoola Bridge Dawbon Township and Pazundaung Township will be better linked and the township will develop with the progress in transport.

He said parents and town elders now have peace of mind and spoke of the need for the teachers to make efforts in implementation of education promotion programmes for promotion of all-round qualifications of the pupils as desired by the State.

He called for turning out good sons and daughters with high qualifications who will serve the interests of the country.

The Secretary-1 and guests inspected the building.

The concrete L-shaped three-stared building, 108 feet long and 28 feet wide and 80 feet long and 28 feet wide, is built at a cost of K 30.8 million by Minami Construction.

The building includes 21 classrooms, an assembly hall, an office, three rooms for teachers and 12 toilets. TV is also provided.

(5)  Secretary-l attends Privatization Commission meeting

YANGON, 25 Jan - Meeting No 1/99 of the Union of Myanmar Privatization Commission was held in the meeting hall of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) this afternoon, attended by Chairman of the Privatization Commission Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Deputy Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office U Hset Maung, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Deputy Minister for Immigration and Population U Maung Aung, Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, department heads and officials.

Director-General of Project Appraisal and Progress Reporting Department U Ohn Lwin acted as master of ceremonies.

In his address, the Secretary-1 said Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe has assigned duty to the Privatization Commission to transfer to private ownership factories, plants and economic undertakings which the ministries concerned cannot run effectively.

(6)  Secretary-1 inspects progress in construction of Maha Bandoola Bridge

YANGON, 25 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected progress in building of Maha Bandoola Bridge in Dawbon Township, Yangon Division, today.

Accompanied by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, the Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-1 arrived at Maha Bandoola Bridge Project site at 9.40 am.

In a meeting hall at the site, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and an official of Public Works reported points of the project, progress of construction works and efforts being made for timely completion of the project.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the project.

Spanning Pazundaung Creek, the bridge, a suspension type with steel frames, will link Pazundaung and Dawbon townships in Yangon, Division.

(7)  Minister inspects port works

YANGON, 25 Jan - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected mooring of Pansodan-Dalla ferries, passenger lounges, ticket sales counters and income from passenger transport services at Pansodan Jetty this morning.

The minister spoke of the need to strive for the development, modernization and cleanliness of the port area.

Accompanied by officials, the minister inspected loading and unloading of goods aboard mv Sittway and mv Myomaywa seagoing vessels.

Maintenance of ships and use of modern equipment is essential, he stressed.

(8)  65 members resign from Ayadaw Township NLD

YANGON, 25 Jan - A total of 65 members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ayadaw Township, Sagaing Division, on 7 January.

Sixty-five members of Ayadaw Township NLD, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Ayadaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 7 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Minister attends seminar on reinsurance

YANGON, 25 Jan - Myanma Insurance and Swiss Re of Switzerland cosponsored a reinsurance seminar this morning at the former' s head office, addressed by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein.

The minister said reinsurance is a system which assures security for direct underwriters, urging participants to study the reinsurance techniques to apply for the nation's benefit.

Also present on the occasion, were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Managing Director of Myanma Insurance U Ba Tun, General Manager of Swiss Re Mr Silvius von Lindeiner, officials and guests.

(10)  77 members resign from Taze Township NLD

YANGON, 25 Jan - Seventy-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Taze Township, Sagaing Division, on 26 December 1998.

Seventy-seven members of Taze Township NLD, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Taze Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 26 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(11)  Professional golfers from foreign countries arrive

YANGON, 25 Jan - Professional golfers of foreign countries arrived here by air today to take part in the London Myanmar Open Golf Tourney.

Eleven players from Japan, 19 from Korea, six from the United States, eight from Thailand, four from Australia and one each from Malaysia, the UK and Swe den were welcomed at Yangon International Airport by officials concerned.

More professional golfers of other countries are due to arrive here tomorrow.

(12)  Man given 10-year jail and death sentence for robbery, rape, murder

YANGON, 25 Jan - Yangon West District Court in Insein Township today passed a sentence of 10-year rigorous imprisonment and a sentence of death by hanging on Myo Tun (a) Mike who robbed jewellery and money and raped and murdered a 15-year-old girl while she was alone in her house at Khabaung Housing, Khabaung Street, Ward 10, Hline Township, under Section 376 and Section 302 (1)(c) of the Penal Code Section 392 of the Penal Code respectively, the two sentences to run consecutively.

The case was that Myo Tun (a) Mike, son of U Hla Tin, of Gwaygon Village, Mawlamyine Township, robbed the girl of jewellery and money, and later raped her and murdered her while she was alone in her house at 1.50 pm on 30 November 1998.

As the accused absconded after committing robbery, rape and murder, the personnel of Myanmar Police Force went in hot pursuit of him and apprehended him in Myeik on 6 December 1998 together with the property robbed.

The investigation revealed that Myo Tun (a) Mike was working at Khabaung Housing site, that on that day he entered the locked house from the garbage disposal hole at the backyard, that he found the girl in the room, robbed her of jewellery and money, raped her and killed her, that the culprit, taking away the loot absconded together with his wife to Myeik, there he was nabbed.

After hearing the case, Yangon West District Court passed judgement on the accused, and also sentenced Myo Tun (a) Mike's father U Hla Tin and five culprits, who lied to the authorities in order to let the accused escape, to six months' imprisonment plus a fine of K 50,000 each under Section 202 of the Penal Code and an additional imprisonment of one-and-half months on default.

(13)  Indian classical dances staged

YANGON, 25 Jan - Minister for Culture U Win Sein attended Indian classical dances performed at National Theatre this evening hailing the 50th Republic Day of India.

The dance programme sponsored by the Embassy of India was also attended by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, diplomats and guests.
