(1) More national entrepreneurs needed to strive for success in farming and set up agro-based industries
YANGON, 23 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and the ministers and senior military officers, yesterday afternoon flew by helicopter to Sankinkyun in Nyaungdon Township.
At the briefing hall of virgin and fellow lands reclamation project of SI Industrial Agricultural Co Ltd, the Senior General and party heard a report on reclamation of new cultivable land of one million acres in Ayeyawady Division under the arrangement of the Government vacant, fallow and virgin wetlands, granting of land reclamation work permit for 30,000 acres in Nyaungdon and Danubyu Townships to SI Ltd and arrangements for better communications between Sankinkyun and adjoining areas by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj Gen Thura Shwe Mann.
Managing Director of SI Industrial Agricultural Co Ltd Dr Mya Thida reported on field study of vacant and fallow land in Sankinkyun by the company, reclamation of land and contract farming with farmers and completion of cultivation.
Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint gave a supplementary report.
Senior General Than Shwe gave necessary instructions.
Next, the Senior General unveiled the signboard of virgin and fellow lands reclamation project of SI industrial Agricultural Co Ltd and performed the ritual gold and silver showers.
The Senior General and party inspected the reclamation of land in Sankinkyun and met local farmers.
Of the vacant, fallow and virgin lands, SI Ltd will reclaim cultivable lands up to 30,000 acres in 2001-2002. This year the company will reclaim 7,500 acres and put 4,500 acres under paddy, beans and pulses and oil crops.
The Senior General and party flew on to Pathein where they were welcomed by Deputy Commander of South west Command Col Tint Swe and officials.
This morning, the Senior General and party proceeded to Myaungmya by helicopter. They inspected Myaungmya Suspension Bridge and toured the town.
Later at the hall of Myaungmya Jute Mill, the Senior General heard a report on cultivation of jute, purchase of jute and production of gunny bags and jute cloth by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin.
Myaungmya District Peace and Development Council Chairman Lt-Col Tin aye reported on yield of monsoon paddy in the district, on-fifth cultivation of summer paddy acreage in the whole country and cultivation of oil crops and kitchen crops, Commander Thura Shwe Mann on arrangements for improvement of regions flooded by sea water into cultivable lands and Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi on providing fuel oil needed in summer paddy cultivation.
Senior General Than Shwe gave necessary guidance. Afterwards, the Senior General and party flew to wetlands in Mogok Deedoke (South) in Pantanaw Township.
At the briefing hall of Yuzana Agriculture Group, they heard a report on land reclamation project of national entrepreneurs in Ayeyawady Division by Commander Maj -Gen Thura Shwe Mann.
Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin then reported on the ministry's assistance to land reclamation project.

(2) Secretary-1 receives national race leaders of Kachin State Special Region (1)
YANGON, 23 Jan - Chairman of Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received national race leader of Kachin State Special Region (1) U Za Khun Ting Ring and members U Nyein Aye, U Zaw Hlaing and U Saung Ting at Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.
Also present on the occasion were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Forestry Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and officials.
They discussed education, transport agriculture mining, wood based industry and regional development.

(3) Secretary-1 attends dinner in honour of delegates to 45th Conference of MMA
YANGON, 23 - A dinner in honour of the delegates to 45th Conference of Myanmar Medical Association was hosted at MMA building on Theinbyu Road at 7 pm today, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

(4) NLD members collude with expatriate insurgent PDF, spread anti-government pamphlets to incite riots
YANGON, 23 Jan - The authorities concerned have exposed the case of the anti-government elements who dropped and distributed instigative pamphlets in the toilets of the Institute of Medicine-2, on buses and at bus stops, in public parks in various ways during November and December 1998.
Khin Soe, an organizer of PDF expatriate group and in-charge of Yay Township (South), was apprehended together with the instigative pamphlets and propaganda leaflets on 22-12-98, and the NLD members in the country, who distributed the instigative pamphlets in collusion with the PDF members to disrupt stability of the State and community peace and tranquillity, were also exposed and apprehended.
It is learned that the so called PDF meaning People's Defence Force (Burma), was formed as headquarters at Thai border area in 1990 and exists as the expatriate insurgent group to carry out anti-government activities under the pretext of democracy; the chairman of the PDF is expatriate insurgent U Sein Mya's nephew Kyaw Htet and the secretary is a man called Shwe Thway, and the group is collaborating with KNU insurgents; PDF secretary Shwe Thway gave training on political defiance ways, sabotage and propaganda spreading ways to organizers Zaw Win, Khin Soe and Win Kywe of Yay and assigned them to recruit new members in the country and exert control from behind in subversive activities to incite riotous upheavals.
It is exposed that Zaw Win is an executive of Yay Township NLD, and in collusion with Yay Township NLD's ward/village organizers Khin Soe and Win Kywe, distributed copies of Khit Pyaing Journal, instigative pamphlets, propaganda leaflets, and anti-government propaganda cassettes to NLD members; in July 1998, they stuck and hung instigative pamphlets in various parts of Yay to cause panic among residents of Yay; they wrote and sent concocted stories to Khit Pyaing Journal, RFA broadcasting station and fake Myanma Alin newspaper published by the expatriates; in July 1998, Palaw Township NLD party organizer U Than Nwe, youth organizer Thitsa and representative elect U Kyi Shwe's son Nyein Chan instigated basic education students to take to the streets and hold riotous protests in Palaw Township, and they also distributed instigative pamphlets in Myeik, Dawei and Kawthoung.
It is learnt that Khin Soe often brought and distributed in Yangon various instigative leaflets sent to him by PDF; in so doing, he himself distributed them at the bus-stops and on buses and asked his associate NLD members to do the same; NLD in collusion with the expatriate terrorists' PDF group distributed instigative leaflets to disrupt stability and peace of the State and was also engaged in subversive acts after making contacts with expatriate terrorists; Khin Maung Kyi member of Mon State NLD EC and Vice-Chairman of Yay Township NLD went to Thai border area and made contacts with PDF secretary Shwe Thway and group.
It is learnt that effective legal action will be taken against PDF members and NLD members who had violated the laws to panic the public and disrupt peace and stability of the State making contacts and colluding with expatriate terrorist organization outside the country.

(5) Bogalay Township NLD members resign
YANGON, 23 Jan - Seventy-one members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Bogalay Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 22 December 1998.
Seventy-one members of Bogalay Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Bogalay Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 22 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6) Maubin Township NLD members resign
YANGON, 23 Jan - One hundred and thirty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Maubin Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 11 January.
One hundred and thirty-three members of Maubin Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Maubin Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 11 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

YANGON, 23 Jan - The Workshop on Implementation of Continuing Nursing Education Activities sponsored by Myanmar Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ministry of Health was held at the meeting hall of MNMC on Bogyoke Museum Street in Bahan Township this morning.
Director (Nursing) of Health Department Chairperson of MNMC Daw Khin May Win presided over it and Assistant Lecturer Daw Nyunt Night Toe acted as master of ceremonies.
Professor U Maung Maung, professor U Min Tha Shein, professor Daw Lorna and Lecturer U Min Boe Nyein briefed on the aims of the workshop and officials of Yangon General Hospital, Psychiatric Hospital and Yangon Division Health Department discussed matters relating to the workshop.
The workshop will continue tomorrow.

(8) S'pore, Myanmar neuro surgeons perform surgeries
YANGON, 23 Jan - Neuro surgeon Dr Prem Pilloy of Mount Elizabeth Hospital of Singapore performed neurological surgeries at Defence Services General Hospital this morning in cooperation with neuro surgeons of DSGH led by Professor Col Than Sein, Professor Dr Saw Simon Tha and Dr Myint Thein of Yangon General Hospital, pediatrician Maj Daw Kay Thi Tun of Defense Services Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital and specialists and Head of Anaesthetic Department of DSGH Lt-Col Maung Maung Myint and specialists.
Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and, Commandant of DSGH
Col Tin Thein Lwin observed the surgeries and attended to the needs.
