YANGON, 22 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace .and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected reclamation of wetlands and vacant, virgin and fallow lands in Yangon Division today.

Senior General Than Shwe, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of the State peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yang on Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chairman of Ayeyawady Division Peace and Development Council Commander of South-West Command Maj-Gen Thura Shwe Man and Chairman of East Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Prime Minister Vice Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for National Planing and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Vice Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win and officials and national entrepreneurs, left Mingaladon Air Base by helicopter at 7 am to Upto Farm in Taikkyi Township, Yangon Division.

On arrival at to Farm, the Senior General and party were welcomed by Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Col Saw Hla Min of Phugyi Station, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa and officials.

The Senior General and party observed 800 acres reclaimed by YCDC at the farm.

The mayor explained to Senior General Than Shwe facts about the farm, cultivation of late-monsoon paddy in fields along the road, cultivation of summer paddy and reclamation of land with labour and machinery.

Senior General Than Shwe and party viewed the farm from the tower at the central station.

In a meeting hall at the farm, they heard a report on cultivable land in Yangon Division, location of wetlands and vacant, virgin and fallow lands, granting of land reclamation work permits to departments and enterprises and the beginning of work by these organizations presented by Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.

Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on provision of manpower, equipment and technology by respective agricultural organizations, by U Ko Lay on implementing of farming by YCDC to ensure rice sufficiency for YCDC staff and to supply consumer markets with meat, fish, vegetables and kitchen crops and YCDC member Col Thaung Wai on experiences in cultivation of late-monsoon paddy, summer paddy and kitchen crops, agricultural works and per acre yield.

After giving counsel, the Senior General checked the seed samples.

Of the 1,500 acres of reclaimable wetlands in to Aphyauk area, YCDC has already reclaimed 800 acres, putting 100 acres under late monsoon paddy and 300 acres under summer paddy. The rest will be put under summer sesames. Test cultivation of onions, chilies and potatoes is being carried out at the farm. Land reclamation will be continued to grow crops on all 1,500 acres of the area.

Senior General Than Shwe and party then visited Hsingyan station of the Ministry of Home Affairs in Aingkalaungkyun, Taikkyi Township.

Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing and officials reported on machinery used at the farm.

Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than reported on location of Aingkalaungkyun and Bawlekyun in Taikkyi and Htantabin townships, condition of wetlands, reclamation of wetlands and building new roads and bridges to ensure smooth transport to Aingkalaungkyun and Bawlekyun, Col Tin Hlaing on e setting up of an agricultural a production centre, putting of 1,000 acres under monsoon and summer paddy, 100 acres under matpe and 50 acres under sunflower and cultivation of kitchen crops and officials on joint reclamation of wetlands at Aingkalaungkyun by the ministry and Shwehte Co Ltd.

Senior General Than Shwe said setting up of New Life camps is discarding the colonialists' idea of prisons and establishing of rehabilitation centres to uplift the life of inmates to become good citizens.

These New Life camps will help the nation's production and will also benefit the prisoners, he said.

Thus, the duty to promote well-being of the people has been included in the responsibilities of the Ministry of Home Affairs, he noted.

YANGON, 22 Jan - The opening ceremony of the 45th Conference of Myanmar Medical Association was held at the MMA building on Theinbyu Road today, with an address by Chairman of the National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, directors-general, rectors, medical superintendents, professors, specially invited guests, representatives of the international organizations, social organizations, doctors resident in foreign countries, the Chairman of MMA (Central), EC members and member doctors.

In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt expressed belief that proper suggestions and good results would emerge for promotion of the national health standard in accord with the social objectives for uplift of health, fitness and education standard of the entire nation and revitalization of patriotic spirit.

As all doctors know, the national health policy and national health plans compatible with the country's situations were laid down and are being implemented for materialization of the social objective for uplift of health and fitness through the strategies - community health care programme, disease control programme, hospital care programme, environmental health programme, health systems development programme, and organization and management programme, he said.

(3)  Myanmar Sai Steel Industry Co Ltd opens Galvanizing Factory

YANGON, 22 Jan - The inauguration ceremony of the Galvanizing Factory of Myanmar Sai Steel Industry Co Ltd was held at the factory on Thanlyin Industrial Region in Thanlyin Township at 11 am today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, deputy ministers, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, Managing Director of Sumitomo Corporation Mr Karashima, Chairman of Myanmar Sai Steel Industry Co Ltd U Htain Win and members of the Board of Directors and guests.

First, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt unveiled the signboard of the factory.

Then, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai, Managing Director of Sumitomo Corporation Mr Karashima and Chairman of Myanmar Sai Steel Industry Co Ltd U Htain Win formally opened the factory.

Afterwards, the opening ceremony of the factory was held.

Chairman U Htain Win and Managing Director Mr Karashima extended greetings and explained about the factory.

Managing Director of Myanma General and Maintenance Industries of the Ministry of Industry-1 U Thaik Tun explained the history of the factory.

(4)  Secretary-1 attends opening ceremony of Shay-saung Modern Cinema

YANGON, 22 Jan - Shay-saung Modern Cinema, renovated by Mingala Company Limited jointly with the Ministry of Information, was opened today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The opening ceremony held at the newly-renovated cinema on Sule Pagoda Road was also attended by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Hotels and Tourism Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of departments, Managing Director of Mingala Co Ltd U Zaw Min and members of the Board of Directors and staff, guests and others.

Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Managing Director of Mingala Co Ltd U Zaw Min formally opened Shay-saung Modern Cinema renovated by Mingala Co Ltd jointly with the Ministry of Information.

Later Secretary-1 and ministers had a look round in the cinema.

(5)  Secretary-1 watches final matches of Asian Badminton Tournament

YANGON, 22 Jan - Chairman of Myanma National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt watched the mixed doubles final match between Myanmar and Singapore of Myanmar Mya Yeik Nyo Asian Satellite Badminton Tournament at Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium-1 this morning.

Finals of other events of the tournament also took place at the venue.

Among the spectators were ministers, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation and officials of the Sports and Physical Education Department, Mya Yeik Nyo Hotel Group and Myanmar Badminton Federation.

(6)  Artistes, technicians and service personnel honoured for making five-academy-award winning film "Myintmyat Hnalontha"

YANGON, 22 Jan - A dinner was hosted at No 2 Tatmadaw Guest House on Uyin Street this evening in honour of artistes, technicians and service personnel for making the five-academy-award winning film "Myintmyat Hnalontha".

It was attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, officers of the Ministry of Defence, heads of departments and guests.

After the dinner, the Secretary-1 made a speech.

(7)  Ambassador of UK calls on Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission

YANGON, 22 Jan - Ambassador of the United Kingdom Mr Robert A E Gordon, accompanied by Second Secretary Miss Tiffany White, paid a courtesy call on Chairman of National Convention Convening Commission Maj Gen Saw Lwin and Vice Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone at the National Convention Convening Work Committee Office in Kyaikkasan Ground at 1 pm today.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary of the National Convention Convening Commission Brig-Gen Aung Thein, commission members U Aung Toe, U Tha Tun, Brig-Gen Tin Aye, U Aye Maung and U Thaung Nyunt.

Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and commission members answered to queries related to the National Convention.

(8)  National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 22 Jan - The National Convention Convening Commission held its meeting in the hall of NCCC at 2 pm today.

Present on the occasion were Chairman NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice Chairmen Gen Pyi Sone and members.

First, Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin delivered an address.

Officials of National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee reported on the National Convention matters.

Members of the National Convention Convening Commission took part in the discussions.

Later, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by Chairman Maj-Gen Saw Lwin.

(9)  Minister meets President of Inter-Asia Development Group

YANGON, 22 Jan - Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung met President of Inter-Asia Development Group Mr Bunjub Ganthamee and party who called at the MIC Office at 1 pm today.

Present at the call were officials of Directorate of Investment and Companies Administration and No 2 Mining Enterprise.

They discussed matters relating to investment in Myanmar.

(10)  IPRD observes eight anniversary

YANGON, 22 Jan - Information and Public Relations Department observed its 8th anniversary this morning at its Head Office on Pansodan Street, with an address by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung.

The minister said the main aim was the success of the task whether it was carried out individually or collectively.

He urged all to foster good mentality, strong spirit and pure mind, stressing the three factors as the key to success in any undertaking.

The three words delivered by all the Buddha's of the Theravada Buddhism urge one and all to abstain from what is evil, to seek what is meritable and to strive for purity of the mind. According to ovada of the Buddha, mind was important. All IPRD staff get together with amity at the meeting, thus enhancing the good mentality and that would be conducive to upholding of national pride.

(11)  USDA CEC member accepts 264 membership applications

YANGON, 21 Jan - Service personnel of Social Security Board of the Ministry of Labour collectively presented Union Solidarity and Development Association membership applications at SSB Head Office on Maha Bandoola Street in Kyauktada Township this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were USDA CEC member Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and EC members, EC members of District and Township USDAs, Chairman and Directors-General of the ministry and guests.

CEC member U Than Shwe made a speech on the occasion.

Then, Minister for Labor Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe presented 264 membership applications of SSB service personnel to Minister U Than Shwe.

(12)  Over 140 kilos of opium seized in Phakant

YANGON, 21 Jan - Acting on information, a combined team including members of regional battalions and units,, intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and departmental personnel raided vegetable truck terminal of Kyauk-thway-taung Market, Ward 4, Seikmu Village, Phakant Township, Kachin State, on 15 January They arrested Ma Bauk, 35, daughter of U Sun Luk Tu, No 44, Aden Village, Tatkon Village-tract, Myitkyina Township, together with 95 packets of opium weighing 142.897 kilos hidden among orange baskets, cabbage bags and jaggery boxes.

Phakant Township MPF Station is taking action against the culprit under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
