(1)  Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition concludes

YANGON, 21 Jan - The prize-giving and closing ceremony of the Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day for 1999 was held at the People's Square this morning, with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Patron of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, Military Appointments-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Defence Services Inspector-General Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Judge Advocate General Col Thein Soe, Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, the directors of the Defence Services Directorates, Tatmadaw Provost Marshal Col Saw Hla, commanding officers and commandants of the battalions and units under the Yangon Command, military officers, other ranks and their families, officers and personnel of Myanmar Police Force, teachers and students, among others.

(2)  Voters submit petitions of no confidence in representative-elect of NLD

YANGON, 21 Jan - Over 89.78 per cent or 56,496 eligible voters of Taungtha Township submitted signed petitions expressing no confidence in an elected Pyithu Hluttaw representative of National League for Democracy on 15 December 1998.

The 56,496 eligible voters of the township presented their signed petitions of no confidence in U Than Tun of NLD at Welaung, Yonsingyi and Phettaw stations in the township.

U Than Tun of NLD was elected as Pyithu Hluttaw representative at the 1990 Multiparty Democracy General Election from Taungtha Township Constituency-2 with 30,074 votes or 47.79 percent of the voters.

Welaung

In Welaung station, farmer U Kyaw Aung of Kaing village, on behalf of the 20,406 voters of 16 village-tracts-Welaung, Ayeywa, Hlepwegon, Nagabo, Kywetal in, Thabutpinde, Yontaw, Taunglulin, Legwetgyi, Khahtetkon, Simigan, Tegyigon, Hsegon, Kaing, Magyeeche and Ayadaw, expressed no confidence in U Than Tun of NLD.

The signed document was presented by farmer U Kan Htein of Welaung village to Township Judge U Min Naing, who is a member of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

Yonsingyi

Voters of another 16 village-tracts of the township totaling 20,081 signed the no-confident petition at the ceremony held in Yonsingyi station.

Farmer U Tin Soe of Paukkan village on behalf of the voters of Letpandaw, Htanpaukkon, Yekha, Panbaung, Aungtha, Alechaing, Magyeepinte, Zayatgyi, Thanban, Dangtaing, Thanto, Yonsinle, Hlegu, Chaungzon and Kanbauk village-tracts, submitted petition expressing their non-confidence.

The signed document was presented to a member of Township Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission by farmer U Htein Win of Yonsingyi village.

Phettaw

In Phettaw Station, 16,009 voters of Nabekan, Myinde, Letthekyin, Kyaukyin, Chongyi, Ohbo, Phayahla, Hnanywa, Phettaw, Kanhsin, Moehnaunggin, Kyaukchaw and Nwabyin village-tracts submitted their expression of no confidence.

Farmer U Myint Thein of Phayahla village, on behalf of voters of 15 village tracts, expressed no confidence in U Than Tun of NLD.

The signed document was presented to the secretary of sub-group of Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission by farmer U Ohn Hsaung of Changyi village.

(3)  Members of Naga armed group (NNC) exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 21 Jan - After realizing the correct objectives, endeavours and sincere goodwill of the Government, members of armed groups are exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups.

At 10 pm on 8 January, deputy commanding officer L Bita Manhsaja (a) Zaw Zaw of No 2 Battalion of Naga armed group (NNC), bringing in one M-20 pistol, one magazine and 26 rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace at Tactical Operations Command in Khamti through the Chairman of Hsinthe Village Peace and Development Council.

Regional Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Khin Maung Myint and local people warmly welcomed him and helped meet his basic needs.

Similarly, a six-member group of No 2 Battalion of NNC under the command of commanding officer John (a) Ram Hsaung, bringing in one M-20 pistol, one M-21 automatic, one M-22 and 32 rounds of ammunition, exchanged arms for peace on 20 November 1998.

The group includes three NNC members and three members of their families.

Two daughters of John (a) Ram Hsaung also exchanged arms for peace on 7 December 1998.

Similarly Second lieutenant Mechi, warrant officer Pohaing and private Waing of the same armed group, together with six family members, exchanged arms for peace on 26 December 1998 bringing in two .303 rifles and 24 rounds of ammunition.

There are other armed group members who will exchange arms for peace.

(4)  Over 210,000 stimulant tablets seized in Lashio

YANGON, 21 Jan - Acting on the information, a combined team comprising members of regional battalions and unit,, intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force searched a white Pajero 2Kha/7763, which was to leave Lashio for Mandalay, at Sintin check point in Lashio, Shan State (North), on 14 January.

The group arrested Kyaw Thu (a) Li Kwan Yon, 30, son of U Li Kyon Hwa of Laukkai and Kyaw Kyaw (a) Ar Hwa, 21, son of U Ran Tei Chan together with WY brand 213,800 stimulant tablets hidden under the floor of the car. Driver Li Chan and car owner Ar Hwa (a) Ran Sun Hwa escaped.

Lashio No 1 MPF Station is taking action against the culprits under the Narcotic Drugs and Psycho-trophic Substances Law.

(5)  Gwa Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 21 Jan - All the Executive Committee members of Gwa Township National League for Democracy, Rakhine State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD of their own volition on 19-11-98.

Gwa Township NLD was first formed on 22 December 1988 with 14 EC members. Out of 14 EC members, seven EC members were left. All the seven EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to participate in NLD's party politics. They notified Gwa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 19 November, members of the Township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(6)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 21 Jan - Twenty one members resigned from National League for Democracy of Kawthmu Township, Yangon Division.

Sixteen members of Kawthmu Township NLD, Yangon Division, of their own volition, tendered resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kawthmu Township Multi party Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 31-12-98 and five members did so on 15-1-99 totaling 21, since they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7)  Semifinals of Asian Round Badminton Tournament

YANGON, 21 Jan - Semifinals of Myanmar Mya Yeik Nyo Asian Round Badminton Tournament took place at Thuwunna National Indoor Stadium-1 today.

Among the spectators were Patrons of Myanma Women's Sports Federation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Cho Oo and members of Panel of Patrons, Adviser to the Ministry of Sports Col Ngo Ciin Pau, President of Myanmar Badminton Federation U Kyi Nyunt and Secretary Dr Mya Lay Sein and officials.

In men's doubles, Chan Huan Choon and Hong Chieng Hon of Malaysia and Patapol and Suket of Thailand beat their rivals and advanced to final.

In men's singles, Anopp Thirarasakol and Polsana Boonsak of Thailand advanced to the final after beating their rivals.

In mixed doubles, Arnan Santosa and Li Li of Singapore and Zaw Win and Moe Thida Zan of Myanmar advanced to the final.

Finals of the tournament will be held tomorrow at the same venue beginning 8 am.

Enthusiasts may watch them free of charge.

(8)  Arrangement for UDNR students' excursion in Yangon discussed

YANGON, 21 Jan - The Management Committee for organizing the excursion of the students of No 30 Regular Four-Year Teachership Course of the University for Development National Races in Yangon held its meeting at the Pyithu Hluttaw building on Pyay Road this afternoon.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of the Management Committee Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen, Khin Maung Than, Vice-Quartermaster-General Brig-Gen Kyaw Win, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, departmental heads, members of the Management Committees and invited officials.

In his address, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than emphasized the need for the officials and departments concerned to make arrangements and preparations for successful and convenient excursion of the students and called for suggestions.

Secretary of the Management Committee Director-General of the Civil Service Selection and Training Board Office U Myint Thein presented a report on the schedule (draft) of the excursion, followed by a general round of discussions.

The meeting ended with the Commander's concluding remarks.

(9)  USDA CEC member accepts 264 membership applications

YANGON, 21 Jan - Service personnel of Social Security Board of the Ministry of Labour collectively presented Union Solidarity and Development Association membership applications at SSB Head Office on Maha Bandoola Street in Kyauktada Township this afternoon.

Present on the occasion were USDA CEC member Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and EC members, EC members of District and Township USDAs, Chairman and Directors-General of the ministry and guests.

CEC member U Than Shwe made a speech on the occasion.

Then, Minister for Labor Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe presented 264 membership applications of SSB service personnel to Minister U Than Shwe.

(10)  Over 140 kilos of opium seized in Phakant

YANGON, 21 Jan - Acting on information, a combined team including members of regional battalions and units,, intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and departmental personnel raided vegetable truck terminal of Kyauk-thway-taung Market, Ward 4, Seikmu Village, Phakant Township, Kachin State, on 15 January.

They arrested Ma Bauk, 35, daughter of U Sun Luk Tu, No 44, Aden Village, Tatkon Village-tract, Myitkyina Township, together with 95 packets of opium weighing 142.897 kilos hidden among orange baskets, cabbage bags and jaggery boxes.

Phakant Township MPF Station is taking action against the culprit under the Narcotic Durgs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
