(1)  General Maung Aye inspects Thaphanseik Dam Multi-purpose Project in Kyunhla Township

YANGON, 19 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye inspected Thaphanseik Dam Multi-purpose Project in Kyunhla Township, Sagaing Division, this morning.

Accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, ministers and senior military officers, the General flew to Kyunhla by helicopter at 7 am.

On arrival at the townships he was welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, Commander of No 33 Light Infantry Division Col Win Myint and officials.

(2)  Secretary-1 receives Chairman of Japanese Association for International Culture and Economy (JAICE)

YANGON, 19 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Chairman of the Japanese Association for International Culture and Economy (JAICE) Mr Taiji Hosono and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this evening.

Present on the occasion together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet.

(3)  Heroin refinery seized in Muse Township

YANGON, 19 Jan - A Tatmadaw column acting on information seized a heroin refinery in Muse Township, Shan State (North) on 3 January.

The column also impound three huts, 23.28 kilos of heroin, 45 gallons of ascetic anhydride, 742 gallons of ether, five packets of sodium chloride, 28 bags of quicklime, four bags of charcoal, three glass retorts, three kerosene stoves, three steel retorts, 630 feet of plastic pipes, 15 plastic buckets, five ceramic pots, two water tanks, a measure, two half barrels, 30 plastic containers, two ceramic basins, 60 soap containers, one 9-mm pistol, nine rounds of ammunitions, three long magazines of M-22 and two short magazines, 82 rounds of ammunition.

(4)  Over 2,346 acres of poppy fields destroyed in Shan State

YANGON, 19 Jan - Over 2,346.36 acres of poppy fields were destroyed in northern, southern and eastern Shan State from 14 November 1998 to 30 December 1998 in the government's efforts in eradicating narcotics with high momentum.

Under the leadership of Tatmadaw columns discharging regional security duties, members of Defence Services Intelligence and Myanmar Police Force and local people jointly destroyed 513.25 acres of poppy fields in Mongko Township, 237 acres in Hsenwi Township, 88.25 acres in Kunlong Township, 20 acres in Kutkai Township, 13.6 acres in Tangyang and 13 acres in Hsipaw Township in North-East Command area.

The combined forces also destroyed 182.95 acres in Panlong Township, 1,267.31 in Phekhon Township and 11 acres in Mongton Township in Eastern Command area.

The Tatmadaw columns are destroying poppy fields in remote areas.

(5)  CEC member explains objectives of USDA

YANGON, 19 Jan - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein lectured on objectives of the association and the State policies at the Management Multiplier Course (1/99) for Executives sponsored by Dagon Myothit (East) Township USDA at 1 pm today.

(6)  Seed division of MAS holds co-ord meeting

YANGON, 19 Jan - The coordination meeting for 1998-99 of Seed Division of Myanma Agriculture Service held at the meeting hall of Applied Research Institute of Gyogon, Insein Township, this morning.

Director-General U Tun Than of Myanma Agriculture Service made a speech.

Afterwards, general managers and farm managers took part in discussions.

Present on the occasion were officers in-charge of farms, seeds and factories.

The meeting will be held till 21 January.

(7)  Thandwe Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 19 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Thandwe Township National League for Democracy, Rakhine State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 21 November 1998.

Thandwe Township NLD was first formed on 9 February 1989 with 14 EC members. Out of 14 EC members, 10 were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Thandwe Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 21 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(8)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 19 Jan - Eighty-seven members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Zalun Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Eighteen members of Zalun Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on the their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Zalun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 15 December 1998 and one member followed suit on 16 December, 17 members on 20 December, five members on 21 December, 17 members on 22 December, 21 members on 23 December and eight members on 25 December, totaling 87, as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9)  Naga Traditional New Year Festival held in Khamti

YANGON, 19 Jan - Naga Traditional New Year Festival was held in Zingalain Khamti on 15 January.

Present on the occasion were member of the Secretariat of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Culture U Win Sein, CEC member Deputy Minister for Science and Technology Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko, officials of the Ministry of Culture, Naga nationals, traditional troupes and locals.

Minister U Win Sein and Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aung Ko delivered speeches.

Chairman of Central Executive Committee for Naga Traditional Culture U Htinn Kov and Patron of the Central Committee National Convention delegate U Hla Maung presented gifts to the minister and the deputy minister.

The minister presented K 100,000 donated by Sagaing Division USDA for Naga traditional cultural troupes to U Htinn Kov.

The deputy minister presented 60 bags of salt and Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Khin Maung Myint 20 bags of rice to U Hla Maung.
