(1) General Maung Aye calls for efforts to raise production in agriculture sector
YANGON, 18 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye gave instructions on raising the production of the agriculture sector in the meeting hall of the Central Command in Mandalay yesterday afternoon.

(2) Kyat expenses on Kissapanadi Bridge total nearly 3 billion Min Creek Bridge will cost over K 1600 million
YANGON, 18 Jan - Chairman of the Work Committee for Implementation of Progress of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the development works in Rakhine State yesterday.
The Secretary-1, accompanied by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, deputy ministers, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads and officials, left here by Tatmadaw aircraft yesterday morning and arrived at Sittway airport in Rakhine State at 9.30 am.
They were welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Rakhine State Peace and Development Council Commander of Western Command Maj-Gen Aung Htwe, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Commander of Danyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Commodore Myat Swe, military officers and civilian officials, families and members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association.

(3) Nineteen entrepreneur groups to reclaim 203,000 acres in Ayeyawady Division
YANGON, 18 Jan - Work permits were presented to entrepreneurs to reclaim wetlands and vacant, fallow and virgin lands in Ayeyawady Division at Phayagon village-tract, Pantanaw in the Division, this morning with an address by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.
The Secretary-2 said permits were granted to nine national entrepreneur groups in Pakokku Township, Magway Division, on 9 January to put over 191,400 acres under crops and five national entrepreneur groups in Taikkyi and Htantabin townships in Yangon Division, on 13 January to put over 28,580 acres under crops.
Permits will be presented to 19 entrepreneur groups to reclaim 203,000 acres at this ceremony.
More wetlands and vacant, fallow and virgin lands are being reclaimed to extend cultivation to ensure rice sufficiency for the people.
Efforts are being made to extend monsoon paddy cultivated areas from 12 million acres to 14 million acres. Four million acres are being put under summer paddy, thus total paddy cultivated areas will become 18 million acres.

(4) 236 members resign from Ngaputaw Township NLD
YANGON, 18 Jan - A total of 236 members resigned from National League for Democracy of Ngaputaw Township, Ayeyawady Division.
One member of Ngaputaw Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, of his own volition, tendered his resignation by sending a letter of resignation to Ngaputaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 15-10-98 and 48 members did so on 24-12-98 and 187 members on 25-12-98 totaling 236, as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(5) Paletwa Township NLD dissolved
YANGON, 18 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Paletwa Township National League for Democracy, Chin State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on 12-11-98.
Paletwa Township NLD was first formed on 6 November, 1988 with twelve EC members. All the EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership, of their own volition, as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD. They notified the office of Paletwa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.
On 12-11-98 and personnel of the Township NLD dissolved it by handing over the seals, signboard and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(6) Myanmar disabled athletes win 41 medals
YANGON, 18 Jan - The victorious disabled athletes who won 41 medals-seven gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze medals-in the 11-17 January 7th Sports and Games for the Disabled of the Far East and the South Pacific arrived back here by air today.
They were welcomed back at the Yangon International Airport by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, President of Myanmar Sports Federation for the Disabled Col Aung Naing and EC members and their relatives.

worth about K 200,000 for Yangon General Hospital this morning.
U Kin Sein and Daw Cho Cho Lwin of No 101, Hninzigon Street in Ahlone Township and Dr Ni Kaung and Dr Hla Hla Kyi of Los Angles, USA, also donated K 200,000 and hospital equipment valued at K 200,000 for the hospital.
Medical Superintendent Dr Taik Wan and officials accepted the donations and presented certificates of honour to the donors.

(8) Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition continues
YANGON, 18 Jan - The Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition being held in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day for 1999 continued at the People's Square today.
Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than presented prizes to the band of No 3 Basic Education High School, Mingala Taungnyunt, which presented demonstration of skills by playing marching songs and others.
Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Military Band Competition Vice-Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, senior military officers and families of the Tatmadawmen.

(9) Management Committee for Observing Anniversary of Armed Forces Day meets
YANGON, 18 Jan - The Management Committee for Observing the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day held meeting this afternoon in a meeting hall in Resistance Park, with an address by Chairman of the committee Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than.
The commander said participants should present all the difficulties they are facing in carrying out their work as the Management Committee will attend to the needs for holding the Armed Forces Day successfully and on a grand scale.
