YANGON, 17 Jan - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Military Affairs and Quarter-master, General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Military Appointment-General Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han and officials, left Yangon for Mandalay by Tatmadaw aircraft at 7 am on 15 January.

General Maung Aye and party were welcomed at Mandalay Airport by members of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the Central Command Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Shan State (North) Peace and Development Council Commander of North-East Command Maj-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo and Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of the North-West Command Maj-Gen Soe Win, Commander of No 33 Light Infantry Division Col Win Myint, Mandalay Mayor Brig-Gen Yan Thein, Deputy Commander of the Central Command Col Nay Win and officials.

(2)  Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Golf Tourney begins

YANGON, 17 Jan - Defence Services Commander-in-Chief's Trophy Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Golf Tournament for 1998-99 was opened at Shwe Sayan Golf Course in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday morning.

Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye formally opened the tournament.

Together with Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Vice-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Lt-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Military Affairs Ministry and Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Tin Hla, commanders, ministers, senior Tatmadaw officers and other players took part in the tournament.

(3)  Secretary-2 inspects progress of Aung Zeya bridge construction in Insein Township

YANGON, 17 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Aung Zeya Bridge across Hline River linking Insein and Hlinethaya Townships this afternoon.

Accompanied by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo arrived at the construction site on Insein side at 1.30 pm.

They were welcomed there by Secretary of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Kyaw Tint, chairmen and members of Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils and officials of Public Works.

First, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected progress of construction work and gave instructions to officials.

(4)  Secretary-2 attends coordination meeting on enforcement of traffic rules

YANGON, 17 Jan - A coordination meeting on enforcement of traffic rules was held at the Head Office of the All Private Bus Lines Control Committee in Tamway Township today, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Vice Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint, departmental heads of respective departments, Chairman of All Private Bus Lines Control Committee U Phone Kyaw and depart mental officials, officials of Yangon East District and respective townships, members of Yangon Division Traffic Rules Enforcement Supervisory Committee and specially invited guests.

Afterwards, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint. Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, Managing Director of Road Transport U Maung Maung Naing and officials reported on the arrangements for traffic safety, followed by a general round of discussions.

(5)  NLD members of Palaw Township resign

YANGON, 17 Jan - A total of 251 members resigned from National League for Democracy of Palaw Township, Taninthayi Division.

Altogether 251 members of Palaw Township NLD, Taninthayi Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Palaw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 8 January as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6)  NLD members of Mawlamyaingyun Township resign

YANGON, 17 Jan - Fifty seven members resigned from National League for Democracy of Mawlamyainggyun Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Fifty seven members of Mawlamyainggyun Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Mawlamyainggyun Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 30 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(7)  OPV given to children on Immunization Days

YANGON, 17 Jan - A ceremony to give oral polio vaccines to children co-sponsored by Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Botataung Township Health Department was held at the Hospital of Naval Region Command Headquarters today.

Patron of Naval Region Command MCWA Daw Aye Aye, wife of Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, wives of senior officers, Head of Botataung Township Health Department Dr Tin Tin Sein and Acting Chairperson of Township MCWA Daw Kyi Kyi Than gave OPV to 276 children under 5.

Present on the occasion were Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Commodore Khin Aung and officers and Department Dr Kyi Soe and officials, gave OPV to children under-5 at Township Health Department in Bahan Township.

(8)  Oral polio vaccines given to children in Yangon Division on National Immunization Day

YANGON, 17 Jan - A team led by Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo and wife gave oral polio vaccines to children at the respective venues here for the second time on the fourth year National Immunization Day today.

The deputy minister and wife and party, accompanied by WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia Dr Than Sein, Deputy Resident Representative of UNICEF Dr Rosella Morelle. Head of Health and Nutrition Department Dr Christian Drico, the rectors and wives, the directors-general and officials, arrived at Mon Dhammayon in Dagon Township.

They were welcomed by Township Medical Officer Dr Ohnmar Thwin, members of Township Peace and Development Council, Union Solidarity and Development Council and Maternal and Child Welfare Association and those of Red Cross and Fire Brigades.

The deputy minister and party gave oral polio vaccines to children. They went to Dhammayon in Ward 5 in Yankin Township and gave OPV to children.

The deputy minister also gave OPV to children in Htaukkyant Child Unit in Mingaladon Township.

(9)  HUB Marine Pte Ltd of Singapore launches Singapore Yangon Port Klang (Malaysia) feeder service

YANGON, 17 Jan - A ceremony to launch Singapore-Yangon-Port Klang (Malaysia) feeder service by HUB Marine Pte Ltd of Singapore was held at Myanmar International Terminal, Thilawa (MITT) this morning.

Present on the occasion were the general manager and officials of MITT, officials of the Myanma Port Authority and the Customs Department, officials of HUB Marine Pte Ltd, members of Kyauktan Township Peace and Development Council and officials of the departments.

(10)  Mayor inspects land reclamation

YANGON, 17 Jan - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay inspected reclamation of vacant, fallow and virgin of land near Uto-Aphyauk Road in Taikkyi Township yesterday afternoon.

The mayor inspected crops farms and progress of work.

Member of YCDC Col Thaung Wai and Head of Department U Myint Swe reported on growing paddy, tomato. chilies, onions and potatoes.

The mayor also inspected reclamation of land with the use of heavy machinery and irrigation.
