(1) Tasks, plans discussed for development of agriculture in Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 15 Jan - The Regional Agriculture Sector Development Leading Committee (Taninthayi Division Regional Development) held its meeting at the Ministry for Agriculture and Irrigation on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road today, with an address by Chairman of the Leading Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the meeting were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Communications, post and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments, General Staff Officer (Grade I) of the Coastal Region Command and Secretary of Taninthayi Division Regional Development Work Committee Lt-Col Khin Maung Nyo, divisional departmental officials, entrepreneurs and guests.

The Secretary-2 said the purpose of the meeting was to enable the Work Committee and the sub-committees to implement the plans as target for development of Taninthayi Division.

He stressed the need for the division to pay serious attention to sufficiency of rice, expansion of cultivation of edible oil palm and rubber, boosting production in the livestock and fishery and mining sectors, and development of the transport sector.

Permits have been granted to entrepreneurs to carry out agriculture services in Ayeyawady, Yangon, Bago and Magway Divisions to cultivate appropriate types of crops, he said and spoke of the need for the private sector to cooperate in the agricultural projects in Taninthayi Division.

(2) Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and Role of Health Sector concludes

YANGON, 15 Jan - Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and Role of Health Sector was held at the International Business Centre for the fourth and final day today.

Today's final session was attended by Chairman of the Organizing Leading Committee of the Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and Role of Health Sector Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, members of Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs, members of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, members of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation, health group, members of Working Group for Prevention of Trafficking of Women, members of organizing work committee and organizing groups, resource persons, WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Dr Than Sein, the resident representative and officials of WHO, representatives of the nations of the South-East Asia, representatives of non-governmental organizations,, observers and guests.

The meeting was chaired by member of National Women's Council Director-General of Health Sciences Ms Husna Razee of Maldives, and members of the panel of chairmen as member of MNWCWA Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Head of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe, and Professor Dr Pensri Phijaisanit of Faculty of Public Health (MCH), Mahidol University of Thailand.

Ms Choden Wangmo Namgyal of Royal Institute of Health Science, Thimphu, Bhutan, was reporter.

Resource persons of the four groups coordinated the topics discussed on the second-day session, and a documentary video on the health sector of the women in South-East Asian region was shown later.

In the afternoon, the meeting reviewed the suggestions and presentations of the representatives and resource persons, and made decisions.

Afterwards, Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe presented souvenirs to the representatives.

On behalf of the participants, President of Legal Aid and Constancy Centre Dr (Mrs) Shanta Thapalia spoke words of thanks.

Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner and Dr Than Sein also made speeches.

(3) Chief of Staff (Army) views Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition

YANGON, 15 Jan - The Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition being held in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day for 1999 continued at the People's Square this morning, attended by Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Before the start of the competition, the band troupe comprising school boys of Practicing Middle School of Yankin Education College presented a demonstration of skills by playing marching songs.

Afterwards, Managing Director U Htay Khaing of Aung Thapyay Khaing Co Ltd presented K 30,000 for the competition, Managing Director U San Nyein of Kaba Kyaw Polythene Bag Co Ltd K 30,000 and Managing Director U Armstrong K 30,000 to Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and officials of Shwethanlwin Co presented prizes to the boys' band through its leader Maung Ze Yar Phyo.

Band troupes representing No 88 Light Infantry Division, South-West Command, Southeast Command Eastern Command, Triangle Region Command and No 99 Light Infantry Division took part in the competition.

(4) Foreign military attaches visit Thilawa Terminal

YANGON, 15 Jan - Foreign military attaches led by Dean of Foreign Military Attaches Corps Military Attaches of the Embassy of the Russian Federation Colonel Vladimir I Kontchakov, together with officials of the Ministry of Defense, visited Myanmar International Terminal Thilawa (MITT) in Kyauktan Township this morning.

Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint extended greetings.

General Manager Mr Cheung Ching Tai, the project manager and Director of the Department for Human Settlement and Housing Development U Win Myint explained matters related to MITT, Myanmar Integrated Port Ltd (MIPL) and Thanlyin-Kyauktan Industrial Zone Project respectively.

Officials conducted the foreign military attaches around the terminal, and explained matters pertaining to container services of MITT and production process of 44 gallon tanks of Asia-Pacific Edible Oil Ltd of MIPL.

Then, the foreign military attaches visited Myanmar Carbonix Plant in Thanlyin Township, and Managing Director Mr Bruno Desies explained the production process of carbon dioxide.

Afterwards, they proceeded to Dagon Myothit (Seikkan Township) Industrial City.

They were welcomed at Kanaung Hall by Director General of the DHSHD U Arnt Kyaw.

Director of DHSHD U Tin Win explained matters pertaining to the industrial city, and Vice-Chairperson of Services International Co Ltd Dr Mya Thida Swe Tin, Kanthaya Golf Course and Modern Housing Estate Project.

Colonel Vladimir I Kontchakov presented souvenirs to Director-General U Arnt Kyaw.

Then, the foreign military attaches observed the scale model of Dagon Myothit (Seikkan Township) Industrial City on display in Kanaung Hall.

Afterwards, they visited Yuzana Garden City Managing Director of Yuzana Construction Co Ltd Dr Myat Hlaing explained matters about Yuzana Garden City and works of Yuzana Construction Co Ltd.

The foreign military attaches raised questions about works of Yuzana Construction Co Ltd and observed Yuzana Housing Project.

Then, they went to the garment factory of Myanmar Glogon Co Ltd.

Director Daw Khaing Mi Win and Factory Manager U Aung Kyaw Thu explained matters pertaining to the factory.

(5) National Level Sports Administrative Course concludes

YANGON, 15 Jan - Under the arrangement of Olympic Unity Programme, a ceremony to conclude National Level Sports Administrative Course sponsored by International Olympic Committee and Myanmar Olympic Committee was held at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna this evening attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win.

Also present on the occasion were Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, Adviser to the Ministry of Sports Col Ngo Ciin Pau, Director of the course Dr Weng Kee Low (Singapore) and instructors, trainees and guests. Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win made a speech. Director of the course Dr Weng Kee Low presented certificates to the trainees individually.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win presented certificates of honour to the instructors. The trainees presented souvenirs to Dr Weng Kee Low.

(6) Second Myanmar IT Exhibition '99 continues for second day

YANGON, 15 Jan - The Second Myanmar IT Exhibition '99 co-sponsored by Head Office of Department of the Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) Computer Department and Computer Journal continued for the second day At the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road today.

The exhibition was visited enthusiasts, students and departmental personnel and entrepreneurs who used computers.

Local and foreign companies open their booths at the exhibition. Of them, Eagle Group, CTT Computer Company, Winner Computer Group, KMD Computer Ltd and DCD Computer Company displayed latest computers, systems, technology and accessories.

The exhibition will continue till 17 January from 10 am to 5 pm daily. Admissions is free.

(7) Four-monthly meeting of Ministry of Education continues for second day

YANGON, 15 Jan - The second and third four-monthly coordination meeting for 1998 of the Ministry of Education continued for the second day at the Universities Central Council of the Higher Education Department at 8 am today.

Present on the occasion were Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Ministers Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, directors general, chairmen, deputy directors-general, directors, rectors, pro-rectors, principals and education officers of the states and divisions.

Deputy Ministers Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung coordinated matters contained in reports presented by directors-general of Departments and chairmen under the ministry.

Afterwards, the meeting ended with concluding remarks by the minister.

(8) Heroin seized in Monghsu

YANGON, 15 Jan - A combined team comprising members of the local Defence Services Intelligence unit, Myanmar Police Force and officials of departments concerned acting on information searched the house of Ma Aye Hsaing, 30, daughter of U Aik Oo of Yadanar Gonyi area, Wankan ward, Mongshu Gem Land, Monghsu, Shan State (South) and seized 0.00025 kilo of heroin in a bottle and 14 packets of heroin weighing 0.00042 kilo wrapped in paper, a total of 0.00067 kilo of heroin.

MPF Station of Loi Hsaung Htauk has taken action against her under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(9) Minister meets General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation

YANGON, 15 Jan - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung met General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation Mrs Yamano Kuchi and party who called at the Ministry of Industry-1, No 192, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road at 8 am today.

Present at the call were Director-General U Win Zaw Nyunt of Directorate of Industries, Director-General of Regional Industrial Coordination and Industrial Inspection Department and Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe and official.

(10) Second Myanmar-Thailand cross-border meeting held on narcotic drugs suppression and prevention

YANGON, 15 Jan - Second across border meeting on narcotic drugs suppression and prevention of Myanmar and Thailand was held at the Golden Triangle Hotel in Tachilek at 8.00 am on 13 January.

Myanmar delegation led by member of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control Deputy Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Police Brig-Gen Hla Tun, Thai delegation led by Deputy General Secretary of Narcotic Drug Control Committee of Thailand Mr Sorasit Sangprasert, Adviser to Bangkok-based Regional Resident Office of United Nations Drug Control Programme Mr Yngve Danling and party.

The meeting focused on prevention and suppression of narcotic drugs, exchange of information, sharing of experience and cooperation between two countries.

After the meeting, the leader of Myanmar delegation met representatives of Thailand TV Channel 3, 5 and 7, ITV and Bangkok Post, and gave an account of narcotic drugs suppression efforts of Myanmar.

He also replied to queries raised of the representatives. In the morning of 12 January, the first day of the meeting, groups for drugs prevention and suppression at the grassroots level discussed matters related to exchange of information and promotion of cooperation between the two sides.

(11) NLD members of two more townships resign

YANGON, 15 Jan - One hundred and thirty-six members resigned from the National League for Democracy party of Kyaiklat Township, Ayeyawady Division.

Twelve members of Kyaiklat Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kyaiklat Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 6 December and 124 members, followed suit on 22 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Similarly, 24 members of Thayet Township NLD, Magway Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Thayet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 31 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(12) US amateur cyclist team starts riding across the country

YANGON, 15 Jan - The visiting US amateur cyclist team accompanied by General Manager U Htay Aung of Myanma Hotels and Tourism Services arrived in Lashio by air on 6 January.

The team then proceeded to Muse by car on 7 January and went sightseeing in Muse and Namkham the following day.

On 9 January morning, they left Muse cycling and evening.

The next day they left Lashio.

The team stopped over in PyinOoLwin, Mandalay and Meiktila before proceeding to Kalaw on 15 January.
