(1) Literary awards aimed at promoting emergence of intellectuals to enlighten and serve the people

YANGON, 12 Jan - Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Awards for 1998 and scholarship awards presentation was held at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road this afternoon, with an address by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, the ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Training Board, the deputy ministers, senior military officers, the director-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, departmental officials, Chairman of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association and EC members, literary scholars, members of literary award scrutiny committee, members of Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Award and Scholarship Award Fund Supervisory Committee, Pakokku U Ohn Pe, award winners, students who won scholarship award, literary enthusiasts and guests.

(2) Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and Role of Health Sector opens

YANGON, 12 Jan - Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and the Role of Health Sector, cosponsored by World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs opened at International Business Centre at 10.30 am today, with an address by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for SWRR Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chief Justice U Aung Toe, Attorney-General U Tha Tun, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, Director of Medical Services of Defence Services, members of NHC, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, rectors, medical superintendents, Resident Representative of WHO Dr Klaus Wagner, members of MNCWA, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation, Group for Prevention of Trafficking of Women and the work committee for organizing the regional consultation, resource persons, WHO representatives of South-East Asia nations, representatives of welfare organizations, observers and guests.

Dr Wagner read the message of South-East Asia Regional Director of WHO Dr Uton Muchtar Rafei.

(3) Chief of Staff (Army) views Military Band Competition

YANGON, 12 Jan - The Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Military Band Competition being held in commemoration of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day for 1999 continued at the People's Square this morning with the attendance of Chairman of Leading Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Military band troupes of Navy, Air Force, military commands, Light Infantry Divisions, Operations Control Command and military training schools are taking part in the competition.

Before starting the competition, the band troupe comprising schoolgirls of Tamway Township No 4 Basic Education High School presented skills by playing marching songs.

Lt-Gen Tin Oo and an official of Shwethanlwin Co presented prizes to the troupe through its leader Ma Su Su Myo Myint.

Band troupes representing Defence Services Academy, No 77 LID, Western Command and No 33 LID then took part in it playing marching songs.

Afterwards, vocalist U Khin Maung Htoo of American Service (Myanmar) Co Ltd presented K 200,000 to Lt-Gen Tin Oo in honour of the Armed Forces Day.

Also present on the occasion were Chairman of the Leading Committee for Organizing the Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Military Band Competition Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Officiating Commander of No 77 LID Col Thaung Tin and senior military officers, families of Tatmadawmen, USDA members, members of Auxiliary Fire Brigade, teachers and students.

(4) 398,000 stimulant tablets seized in Tachilek

YANGON, 12 Jan - A total of 398,000 stimulant tablets were sized from a Toyota Hilux in the garage of a house at 85/94, 3rd Street, Lower Hsansai Ward, Tachilek, Shan State (East), by a team comprising members of the regional Defence Services Intelligence unit and the police force and officials of departments concerned on 3 January.

After drag-netting the house and its premises, the authorities uncovered machinery and- utensils and chemicals used in making stimulant drugs and also confiscated a white Toyota Hilux without license plate, a green Mitsubishi, a Toyota Hilux with Thai number plate, a Pontiac saloon with number plate of 1 Kagyi/2678 and 10,000 Thai baht.

When they raided the house, O Ram, the owner of the house, and his wife Daw Kyu Li Kyu were not there.

On further information from Ma Than Nu who was seen at the house at that time, Daw Kyu Li Kyu, the owner of the machine and chemicals, was arrested by authorities when she was at the wheel of a green Toyota Hilux with Thai number plate traveling on Bogyoke Road in Tachilek 4 January morning.

Action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(5) Members of Ingapu Township NLD resign

YANGON, 12 Jan - Seventy-eight members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Ingapu Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 29 December.

Seventy-eight members of Ingapu Township NLD, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Ingapu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 29 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(6) Local, foreign merchants inspect gems, jade lots

YANGON, 12 Jan - Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited continued its 10th gem and jade sales at Gems Mart, No 66, Kaba Aye Pagoda Road, from 9 am to 5 pm today.

A total of 478 local and foreign merchants today viewed the gems, jade and jewellery there.

(7) Deputy Prime Minister meets Director of Mandalay Mining Company NL

YANGON, 12 Jan - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin met Director of Mandalay Mining Company NL Mr Owen A Kelly and party who called at his office at 10.30 am today.

Present at the call were Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein and officials.

They discussed feasibility studies carried out for mineral exploration.

(8) Members of Pyinmana Township NLD resign

YANGON, 12 Jan - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pyinmana Township, Mandalay Division, on 27 December.

Twenty-two members of Pyinmana Township NLD, Mandalay Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Pyinmana Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 27 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(9) Khun Pa-O Co opens fertilizer plant in Shan State

YANGON, 12 Jan - Khun Pa-O Co Ltd established by Shan State Special Region No 6 opened a plant producing high quality fertilizer in Ganaing Village, Taunggyi, Shan State, on 9 January.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Maj-Gen Maung Bo, Pa-O national leader U Aung Kham Hti of the region, officials and local people.

Maj-Gen Maung Bo formally opened the factory and also made a speech at the ceremony to mark the opening of the factory.

(10) Minister inspects Gyaing (Zathabyin) Bridge Project in Kayin State

YANGON, 12 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun inspected Gyaing (Zathabyin) Bridge Project in Kayin State yesterday.

In the briefing hall of the project, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Khin Maung Win reported to the minister on progress in building of the bridge.

The minister gave instructions on the project, saying the bridge is a vital link on Yangon-Hpa-an-Mawlamyine-Ye-Dawei-Myeik-Kawthoung Motor Road.

In giving instructions to officials, he said the bridge will be opened soon, and officials are specially required to correctly and accurately inspect testing of how much load the bridge can bear.

Afterwards, the minister and officials inspected the bridge which will be 2900 feet long on completion and preparations for opening of the bridge which can bear 60-ton loads.

Together with Chairman of Kayin State Peace and Development Council Col Saw Khin Soe and officials, the minister also inspected construction of Kawkyaik-Kawpayan-Zathabyin road between the bridge and Hpa-an.

(11) Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and Role of Health Sector begins

YANGON, 12 Jan - Regional Consultation on Violence Against Women and the Role of Health Sector, cosponsored by World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement and Myanmar National Committee for Women's Affairs began at International Business Centre at 10.30 am today.

Present on the occasion were members of MNCWA, Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation, Group for Protection of Trafficking of Women, leading organizing committee, organization work committees and organizing groups, resource persons, officials of WHO, representatives of South-East Asian nations, representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations, observers and guests.

The meeting was chaired by member of MNCWA Vice-Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Head of Working Group for Prevention of Violence Against Women and Rehabilitation Dl Khin Win Shwe with members of the panel of chairmen as Dr Pensri Phijaisanit of Thailand and Ms Husna Razee of Maldives.

Dr Khin Win Shwe made a speech.

Participants took part in the discussions.

The consultation continues till 15 January.
