(1) Secretary-1 previews UMEHL gem and jade sales

YANGON, 11 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt previewed the 10th Gems and lade Sale of Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited at Myanma Gems Mart this morning.

Accompanied by Chairman of UMEHL Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Win Myint and Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, the Secretary-1 arrived at the mart at 9 am and was welcomed by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Immigration and Manpower U Saw Tun, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Managing Director of UMEHL Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and members of the board of directors, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials.

The Secretary- I and party observed jade blocks in the compound of the mart, rubies, sapphires, peridots and jewellery on the top floor and rubies, sapphires and jewellery in the auction hall.

Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and officials explained to them about the display.

The Secretary-1 left the mart at 10.20 am.

(2) Communications Policy Supervisory Central Committee holds fourth meeting

YANGON, 11 Jan - The fourth meeting of the Communications Policy Supervisory Central Committee was held in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs this afternoon, attended by Chairman of Communications Policy Supervisory Central Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were members of the Committee Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe and Director of Signals Brig-Gen Aung Myint, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein and officials.

(3) Marching songs, martial music invigorate spiritual strength of Tatmadaw members and people Armed Forces Day Anniversary Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Military Band Competition commences

YANGON, 11 Jan - The 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Anniversary, Eighth Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) Military Band Competition commenced at the People's Square today, with the opening address by Chairman of the Leading Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present at the opening ceremony were Chairman of the Management Committee for Observance of the 54th Anniversary Armed Forces Day Commander of Yangon Command  Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, members of the Ministry of Defence, Tatmadaw Provost Marshal Col Saw Hla, and military officers, officials of the Management Committee, Work Committee and subcommittees, members of the board of judges, Tatmadaw families, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, the band troupes of Myanmar Police Force, Fire Services Department and basic education schools, teachers, students and guests.

(4) Minister visits Thayet Cement Mill, Shwedaung Textile Finishing Mill

YANGON, 11 Jan - Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, accompanied by Director-General of the Directorate of Regional Industrial Coordination and Industries Inspection U Tin Saing, Managing Director of Myanma Ceramics Industries U Than Shwe and officials, visited Thayet Cement Mill in Magway Division yesterday morning.

The minister inspected the mill and gave instructions on maintenance of machinery.

The minister also met the mill manager and employees, and gave instructions on the work.

Later, the minister attended the 70th Birthday Anniversary of Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Presiding Sayadaw of Aungmingala Sarthintaik of Thayet Bhaddanta Kesara (Agga Maha Pandita).

The minister presented offertories to the Sayadaw.

Afterwards, the minister inspected the construction of office of District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations in Thayet and the already-constructed office building of Aunglan Township USDA.

The minister and party also inspected Shwedaung Textile and Finishing Mill and Thayawady Ceramics Factory.

(5) Amphetamine base powder seized in Kutkai

YANGON, 11 Jan - A combined team comprising members of the local Defence Services Intelligence unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information stopped and searched a white Hilux car at the toll gate of Muse and seized 17 bags of Amphetamine base powder weighing 635 kilos in the car and arrested Than Pe (a) Kyan Sont, driver, son of U Chin Lwe Hein in Ward 8, Lashio and San Tun, a Passenger in the car, son of U San Maung of Dawnabwa Ward in Aungmyay Thazatn Township, Mandalay. Legal action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(6) Members of Chanmyathazi Township NLD resign

YANGON, 11 Jan - Twelve members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay Division.

One member of Chanmyathazi Township NLD, Mandalay Division, on his own volition, tendered his resignation by sending letter of resignation to Chanmyathazi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 23-12-98, one on 26-12-98, two on 28-12-98, one on 29-12-98 and seven on 1-1-99 totaling 12, since they no longer wished to take part in NLD party politics.

(7) UMEHL gem, jade sales begin

YANGON, 11 Jan - Jade and gem lots totaling 494 with reserve prices of US $ 1.38 million and K 422.78 million are on display at the 10th gem and jade sales of Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited.

The sales which began this morning at Myanma Gems Mart are of 234 lots of gems at reserve price of K 365.78 million, 95 jade lots at reserve price of US $ 1.38 million and 165 gem and jewellery lots of entrepreneurs at K 57 million will go on daily from 9 am to 5 pm till 14 January.

Sales of gems, jade and jewellery by bargain and auction systems will begin at 9 am on 15 January.

(8) Minister inspects roads, bridge construction projects in Kayin State

YANGON, 11 Jan - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Deputy Minister U Tint Swe arrived at the bridge No 2/83 under construction on Yangon-Mawlamyine Road in Waw Township on 9 January.

Deputy Superintending Engineer U Soe Myint reported on progress of work.

The minister gave instructions on completion of the bridge during open season and safety.

The minister then inspected the construction site and the Yangon-Mawlamyine and Thaton-Myainggalay roads.

On 10 January, the minister and party inspected construction of Gyaing (Kawkareik) Bridge on Hpa-an-Kawkareik-Myawady Road. Chief Engineer (Bridge) U Hla Myint reported on progress of work.

The minister gave instructions for completion the bridge in time and proper care at work-site and supervision.

The minister inspected approach roads, flooring and the main piers on Hpa-an and Kyondo sides.

The Gyaing (Kawkareik) Bridge is being built near Gyaing Village on Hpa-an Kawkareik-Myawady road in Kayin State.

The reinforced concrete bridge is 365.76 metres long and 7.5 metres wide and is a vital link in the region.

(9) Independence Day Book Fair

YANGON, 11 Jan - The book fair, opened at Sarpay Beikman in commemoration of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day, is crowded with book lovers daily.

People are buying Myanmar Encyclopedia Yearbooks, books on general knowledge and prize winning works and other publications.

The fair is selling various kinds of books at special discount rates daily from 9,30 am to 4.30 pm till 29 January.

(10) Members of Minbu Township NLD resign

YANGON, 11 Jan - Altogether 22 members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Minbu Township, Magway Division, on 20-12-98.

The 22 members of Minbu Township NLD, Magway Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Minbu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 20 December as they no longer wished to participate in NLD party politics.

(11) Minister for SWRR inspects training schools

YANGON, 11 Jan - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone inspected Social Welfare Training School, disabled aged and youth training schools on Kyaikwaing Pagoda Road in Mayangon Township this afternoon.

Principal Captain Soe Moe Aung of Social Welfare Training School reported on the school, welfare and conducting of courses, Principal Daw Lilian Gyi and Vice-Principal U Soe Min on care services for the disabled and vocational education.

The minister gave instructions on conducting of the courses, greening of its environs, cultivation of seasonal and perennial crops, implementation of the project for staff welfare.

The minister met trainees and inspected the courses at the schools.
