(1)  Steel parts fixed atop Shwedagon Pagoda to start work for maintenance of Shwehtidaw

YANGON, 10 Jan - The ceremony to seek Ovadacariya Sayadaws' counsel on renovation of the Shwehtidaw of the Shwedagon Pagoda and the ceremony to convey parts of the Shwehtidaw atop were held at the Ancient Museum Tazaung on the pagoda plat form and at the Sunday Planetary Post respectively today.

Patron of the Committee for All-round Perpetual Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt supplicated to the Ovadacariya Sayadaws the plans for renovation of the Shwehtidaw and started the decorated cable carriage conveying the parts of the Shwehtidaw.

Present at the ceremonies were Ovadacariya Sayadaws of the Shwedagon Pagoda headed by the State Ovadacariya Sirimanta Sankyaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Rajindabhivamsa, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw-Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, deputy ministers, members of the group conveying the parts of the Shwehtidaw and pilgrims.

(2)  Secretary-l attends dinner in honour of graduates of MBA

YANGON, 10 Jan - Dinner was hosted in honour of Master of Business Administration graduates conferred by Yangon Institute of Economics at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel this evening, attended by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, deputy ministers, department heads, economists, Rector of Yangon Institute of Economics U Maw Than and faculty members and guests.

(3)  Secretary-l attends ceremony of laying foundation of ITBMU main building

YANGON, 10 Jan - A ceremony to lay the cornerstone of the main building of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University was held at the pandal on the campus of the university near the Tooth Relic Pagoda in Mayangon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were ministers, deputy ministers, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, department heads, officials of the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, the faculty of the university and trainees from home and abroad, Upathaka Aphwe of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, members of women's religious association, donors and officials and guests.

Assistant Director of Religious Affairs Department U Kyi Lwin performed the rites of inviting and propitiating the celestial beings.

Then, the Secretary-1 laid the casket, the stone inscription and bricks of the foundation.

Afterwards, the Secretary-1, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin laid the bricks of the foundation.

Then, the Secretary-1 and party sprinkled scented water on the bricks.

Assistant Director of Religious Affairs Department U Kyi Lwin performed the rites of sending back the celestial beings.

The Secretary-1 and the ministers performed the ritual of golden and silver showers to mark the successful completion of the ceremony.

(4)  Crops being cultivated on reclaimed vacant, virgin lands in Magway Division

YANGON, 10 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, accompanied by the ministers, the deputy ministers, senior military officers, local and foreign newsmen and private entrepreneurs, inspected vacant, fallow and virgin lands in Ngaphe, Pwintbyu and Salin Townships in Magway Division on 8 January.

The Secretary-2 and party left for Ngaphe Township by helicopter and inspected vacant, fallow and virgin lands there.

Chairman of Minbu District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Tin Maung Win and agricultural officials reported on conditions of vacant, fallow and virgin lands, transport to the plantations and availability of water at the work-site office at Padan junction.

Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Thein Zaw gave a supplementary report.

Managing Director of Services International Co Ltd Dr Mya Thida reported on cultivation of cotton on over 22,000 acres in Ngaphe Township. The Secretary-2 gave instruction an them. Township.

Chairman of Myanmar Billion Group Co Ltd U Aung Ko Win and Director of Shwe Thazin Syndicate Ltd U Kyee Sein reported on arrangements on cultivation on over 30,000 acres in Pwintbyu and Minbu Townships.

(5)  Ministry of Defence presents prizes to outstanding children of Tatmadaw men

YANGON, 10 Jan - A ceremony to give away prizes to children of the Tatmadaw men (Army, Navy and Air) of the Ministry of Defence who passed the respective examinations outstandingly, was held at the ministry this afternoon.

The ceremony was at tended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, directors and senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, parents and their children.

The Secretary-2 made a speech on the occasion.

Then, the Secretary-2, directors and senior military officers presented prizes to a total of 116 students including 60 primary school students, 19 middle school students, 20 high school students and 17 university and college students.

(6)  Secretary-2 attends prize distribution of Women's Development Centre

YANGON, 10 Jan - To commemorate the 51st Anniversary Independence Day, a ceremony to present prizes to all-round outstanding trainees of the Women's Development Centre (Wingaba) and to set up trust fund for WDC (Wingaba) was held at the Centre on Wingaba Street in Bahan Township this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tin, department heads and officials, officials of Yangon West District and Bahan Township Peace and Development Councils, donors, Chairperson of Women's Development Centre (Wingaba) Daw Nyunt Nyunt Khin and members of the executive committee, trainee girls and guests.

(7)  NLD members of two more townships resign

YANGON, 10 Jan - Altogether 155 members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Pale Township, Magway Division.

The 155 members of Pale Township NLD, Magway Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Pale Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 20 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

Tatkon

Similarly, 17 members resigned from the National League For Democracy of Tatkon Township, Mandalay Division.

The 17 members of Tatkon Township NLD, Mandalay Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Tatkon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 25 December as they no longer wished to participate in NLD party politics.

(8)  Winners of Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Award on excursion

YANGON, 10 Jan - Winners of Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Award visited Shwemawdaw Pagoda in Bago this morning and donated K 9,000 for the pagoda.

Members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees U Tun Nyunt explained the salient points of the pagoda.

They also visited Kanbawzathadi Palace, Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha Image and Maha Zedi and donated cash.

In the afternoon, they visited Mingaladon Garden City, Industrial Zone and Karaweik Hall.

(9)  Medal winning Myanmar athletes honours

YANGON, 10 Jan - A ceremony to honour athletes who brought honour to the nation for 1998, sponsored by Myanmar Women's Sports Federation was held in conjunction with cash donation ceremony at the National Indoor Stadium-1, Thuwunna,, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Vice-Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, patrons of MWSF Dr Khin Win Shwe, Daw Khin Than Nwe, Daw Khin Cho Oo, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, Officer on Special Duty Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Paw and officials, Chairperson of MWSF Professor Dr May May Yi and executives, the leader and officials of Myanmar sports contingent in XIII Asian Games, athletes and guests.

Chairperson Professor Dr May May Yi extended greetings.

Officials presented cash awards to athletes who won gold, silver and bronze medals in XI and XIII Asian Games.

Then, Patron Dr Khin Win Shwe accepted cash donation for MWSF.

(10)  Minister visits Tyre and Rubber Factory No 1

YANGON, 10 Jan - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin visited No 1 Tyre and Rubber Factory in Thaton, Mon State, on 8 January morning.

He was welcomed there by Tactical Operations Commander of LID No 44 Col Khin Maung Si, Managing Director of Myanma Tyre and Rubber Industries Lt-Col Oo Zun, General Manager of the factory Lt-Col Myo Thein and employees.

The minister inspected tyre manufacturing process and gave instructions on the work.

Yesterday morning, the minister inspected the research and inspection section, finished product warehouse, raw materials warehouse and basic industrial training course of the factory.

Then, the minister met employees of the factory in the assembly hall of the factory, and attended to their requirements.

(11)  Paper reading session of MES

YANGON, 10 Jan - Paper reading session of Myanmar Engineering Society was held at the society this afternoon, attended by Deputy Minister for Science and Technology U Hlaing Win.

Chairman Rector U Nyi Hla Nge made an opening speech.

Papers were presents on Electric Power Engineering by U Pyi Soe and U Jawt Bumu, on Petroleum Engineering by U Win Myint and on Metallurgy Engineering by U Aung Hla Tun.

Paper reading session on Electronics Engineering, Aviation Engineering and Architecture will be held at the same venue on 17 January and those interested may attend it.
