(1)  Secretary-l attends opening ceremony of Ayeyeikmon Housing Project Phase III

YANGON, 5 Jan - A ceremony to open Ayeyeikmon Housing Project Phase m of Hline Township jointly undertaken by Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development and Yuzana Construction Group, and to open and hand over new school buildings of Basic Education Primary School No 14 and Basic Education Primary School No 29 of Hline Township was held at Ayeyeikmon Housing Project in Hline Township.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony.

(2)  Secretary-1 receives Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal

YANGON, 5 Jan - Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal Mr Murari Raj Sharma and party who called at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 5 pm today.

Present on the occasion together with Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Ambassador of Nepal Mr Satchi Shumshere J B Rana.

(3)  Coordination meeting held for completion of major projects in time

YANGON, 5 Jan - Coordination meeting on completion of major projects in time was held at Public Works (Head Office) this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

It was attended by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Ministers for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and U Tint Swe, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and departments.

The Secretary-2 said construction works are being undertaken in the respective states and divisions for national development and some of reservoir, factory and bridge construction projects are to be completed before monsoon, adding that necessary assistance will also be provided for completion of some projects in open season.

He spoke of fixing priority stage in fulfilling requirements and cooperation by departments.

Ministers Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Maj-Gen Saw Tun and Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on projects to be completed before monsoon and requirements and Minister U Aung Thaung on assistance of the ministry.

The Secretary-2 then fulfilled the requirements.

(4)  Tatmadaw Agricultural Course 35 opens

YANGON, 5 Jan - The Tatmadaw Agricultural Course 35 opened at Central Rice Cultivation Centre in Hmawby Township, Yangon Division, this morning, addressed by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Khin Maung, officials of the ministry and Hmawby Station, local authorities and trainees.

The minister elaborated on the endeavours to boost national agricultural produce based on three objectives to ensure surplus paddy production, to ensure local sufficiency in edible production and extension of beans and industrial crop cultivation.

He also spoke of efforts in putting 14 million acres under monsoon paddy and four million acres under summer paddy and extension of cultivation of four main crops - paddy, beans, cotton and sugarcane - reclamation of fallow, vacant and virgin lands and wetlands, applying four innovative means.

He cordially greeted all the trainees.

The 14-week course is being attended by 185 Tatmadawmen of Army, Navy and Air.

(5)  Amphetamine tablets, arms, ammunition, cash seized in Tachilek

YANGON, 5 Jan - Amphetamine tablets, arms, ammunition and cash were seized in Meileikpakaw (Lower) and Meileikpakaw (Upper) villages in Mongko village-tract, Tachilek, Shan State (East-3) on 5 December 1998.

A combined force of members of Defence Services Intelligence, Tatmadawmen and members of Myanmar Police Force searched the house of Phihsa @ Soe Win son of U San Tu in Meileikpakaw (Lower) village and found 108,000 amphetamine tablets, one M-16, one magazine, 20 rounds of ammunition, baht 68,930, 15 kinds of gold-ware weighing over 20 ticals, nine cars and one motorcycle.

In Meileikpakaw (Upper) village, they searched the house of Yaku Hsam, son of U Cho Hsan, and found 166,000 amphetamine tablets, one .45 pistol, one magazine, seven rounds of ammunition, one rifle, 49 ammunition, baht 6,680, yuan 281, K 68,250, six kinds of gold-ware weighing over nine ticals, one car and two motorcycles.

Police of Tachilek booked the culprits and impounded the drug, cash and related property.

(6)  USDA Multiplier Management Course concludes in Kyauktan

YANGON, 5 Jan - A ceremony to conclude the Multiplier Management Course No 8 for Executives of Kyauktan Township Union Solidarity and Development Association was held in the Township USDA Office this morning.

Member of Central Executive Committee of USDA Minister at the Prime Minister's Office U Than Shwe addressed the ceremony.

Present on the occasion were Executive Committee members of Division, District and Township USDAs, members of Township Peace ant Development Council, chairperson and members of Maternal and Child Welfare Association, guests and trainees.

Altogether 60 trainees attended the course which lasted two weeks.

(7)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 5 Jan - Forty-three members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Thayet Township, Magway Division, on 21 December 1998.

Forty-three members of Thayet Township NLD, Magway Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Thayet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.

(8)  Yebyu Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 5 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Yebyu Township National League for Democracy, Taninthayi Division, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 28 December 1998.

Yebyu Township NLD was first formed on 26 April 1991 with nine EC members. Out of nine EC members, seven were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Yebyu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 28 December, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(9)  MPS pays respects to doyen photographers

YANGON, 5 Jan - Myanmar Photographic Society held the fourth ceremony to pay respects to doyen photographers at 27 to 29, 35th Street (lower block), Kyauktada Township, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Sayagyi U Khin Lay Maung, U Maung Maung Kyi, U Thein Maung, U Maung Maung Tin, U Pe Khin and U Than.

Chairman of Myanmar Photographic Society U Aye Chit and members paid respects to the doyens.

Sayagyi U Thein Maung made a speech on behalf of all doyens.

(10)  Minister meets leader of Tohoku Kodai High School Karate-do Team

YANGON, 5 Jan - Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win met leader of Tohoku Kodai High School Karate-do Team Mr Akihiro Sakai and three members of Japan who called at his office this morning.

Present at the call were Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, Officer on Special Duty Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau, President of Myanmar Karate-do Federation Police Col Khin Maung Tun and officials.

They discussed mutual cooperation in Karate-do event.

The minister, guests and officials attended demonstration of Tohoku Kodai High School Karate-do team and Myanmar athletes at the National Indoor Stadium 1 in Thuwunna.

Also present on the occasion were officials of SPED, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, executives of ME, officials of the Japan Embassy, trainees of Sports and Education Combined Training School, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and spectators.

President of MKF Police Col Khin Maung Tun made a speech Mr Akihiro Sakai also gave a speech and presented a digital score board to MKF.

Japanese Karate-do Coach Mr Mori Yutaka demonstrated on single Kata event.

Myanmar and Japan athletes competed single and team Kata events.

Later, MKF President, leader of the Japanese team and Col Hla Myint Kyaw presented prizes to the winners.

(11)  202 grams of heroin seized in Mandalay

YANGON, 5 Jan - Acting on information, members of Mandalay Anti-Drug Squad searched two suspects Kyaw Kyaw Win and Htay Maung-at a place between 75th Street and 32nd and 33rd Streets in Mandalay at 2.30 pm on 19 December.

They seized 202 grams of heroin kept in soap boxes from Plastic bag of Kyaw Kyaw Win.

No 1 Police Station in Mandalay has taken action against Kyaw Kyaw Win, 31, son of U Thaung Shwe of Pyigyi-Dagun Township and Htay Maung, 40, son of U Nyein of Chanmya-Thazi Township under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.
