(1) Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing host 51st Anniversary Independence Day reception and dinner

YANGON, 4 Jan - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing hosted the 51st Anniversary Independence Day reception and dinner at the Pyithu Hluttaw building on Pyay Road this evening.

Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing arrived at the Pyithu Hluttaw building, the venue of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day reception and dinner, at 6.30 pm.

Together with Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, members of the State -Peace and Development Council, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, and Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Military Affairs Lt-Gen Tin Hla, Senior-General Than Shwe and Daw Kyaing Kyaing greeted diplomats and their wives headed by Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Ambassador of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr Ly Bounkham and wife, and resident representatives of the UN agencies and their wives.

Also present at the 51st Anniversary Independence Day reception and dinner were the Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and wife, the Secretary-l and wife, the Secretary-2 and wife, the Secretary-3 and wife, members of the State Peace and Development Council and their wives, the Deputy Prime Ministers and their wives, ministers and their wives, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the Auditor-General, the Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Yangon Mayor and their wives, the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and wife, officials of the Multi-party Democracy General Election Commission and the National Convention Convening Commission and their wives, the directors-general of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Government Office, President's Office, Pyithu Hluttaw Office and Protocol Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dean of Diplomatic Corps and wife, diplomats and their wives, charge's d' affaires ai of the embassies and their wives, resident representatives of the UN agencies and their wives, prize winner students of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day commemorative essay, poetry, TV quiz and computer graphic art contests, and guests.

Before and during the dinner, the guests were entertained to songs of the vocalists of Myanma Athan Modern Music Troupe.

After the dinner, the dance troupe of the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture entertained the dignitaries with Apyodaw dance, Pa Pa Win Win dance, Naga yein dance, and Let-hsint-kan amway dance.

(2)  State Flag-hoisting and saluting ceremony held in Yangon on 51st Anniversary Independence Day

YANGON, 4 Jan - State Flag-hoisting and saluting ceremony for the 51st Anniversary Independence Day of Yangon City was held at People's Square on Pyay Road this morning.

The ceremonies were held in accord with the objectives for all citizens to strive for perpetuation of independence and sovereignty, non-disintegration of the Union and non-disintegration of national unity, for all citizens to strive with oneness of mind to build a new modern and developed nation, for all citizens to strive in harmony and unison for emergence of a new enduring State Constitution and for all citizens to strive for vitalization of patriotism and safeguarding of national character.

The flag-hoisting ceremony was attended by over 13,000 people.

Members of the Division, District and Township Union Solidarity and Development Associations, teachers, students, members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, departmental officials, service personnel, members of Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association, the masses including peasants and workers assembled at the designated places at 6 am.

Altogether 5,500 people of Yangon East and South Districts and 2,200 people from Dagon, Seikkan, Kyauktada, Pabedan, Latha and Lanmadaw Townships marched toward People Square from the venue at Myoma Kyaung Road beside Myoma Sports Grounds and 700 people from Ahlon Township entered it through No I Gate of People's Square and took place.

Over 2,600 from Bahan, Mayangon, Hline, Kamayut, Kyimyindine and Sangyoung Townships and 2,000 from Yangon North District marched toward People's Square from the venue at Padonma Sports Ground and entered it through No 2 Gate of People's Square and took place.

Similarly, CEC members of the USDA, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, officers of Yangon Command, heads of central organizations, the directors-general and managing directors, members of Division and District Peace and Development Councils, Heads of Office, Heads of Departments of Yangon City Development Committee, the rectors of universities and institutes, principals of colleges, medical superintendents, departmental officials, Township Education Officers in YCDC area, trainee delegates of Special Refresher Course No 4, Advanced Management Course No 3 for Executives, International Relations Course No 2 and Management Course No 16 for Executives, EC members of Division, District and Township USDAs, representatives of Myanmar War Veteran Organization Central Headquarters, Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar National Committee for Women' s Affairs, Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association, Myanmar Medical Association, Myanmar Dental Surgeons Association, Myanmar Nurses Association, Myanmar Engineering Association, Myanmar Assistant Health Officers Association, Myanma Music, Thabin and Motion Picture Asiayons, Myanmar Writers and Journalist Associations, Myanmar traditional Artists and Artisans Asiayon, Myanma Anti-Narcotics Association and the Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry, nationalities of Fine Arts Department and local and foreign newsmen took their designated place.

At 4.20 am, State Flag hoisting ceremony for the 51st Anniversary Independence Day of Yangon City was held. At 7 am, the Guard of Honour (Army, Navy and Air) led by the State Military Band marched from the Pyithu Hluttaw toward the People's Square and took its place.

(3) Winners in essay, poem, TV quiz, computer art competitions given prizes on Independence Day anniversary

YANGON, 4 Jan - Prizes were presented to winners in 1999, 51st Anniversary Independence Day essay, poem, TV quiz and computer art competitions at the Pyithu Hluttaw building this evening.

The ceremony was addressed by Chairman of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day Central Organizing Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace ant Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, members of the central committee and the respective subcommittees, heads of department, rectors, school heads, students and guests.

(4) Medal winning Myanmar athletes in XIII Asian Games honoured

YANGON, 4 Jan - A ceremony to honour Myanmar athletes who won medals in the XIII Asian Games was held at the National Indoor Stadium 1, Thuwunna, in Thingangyun Township this morning, attended by Chairman of Myanmar National Olympic Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Yangon Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, senior military officers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council office, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, presidents of sports federations, departmental officials, the leader, managers, coaches and athletes of Myanmar sports contingent, among others.

In his address, Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said that while the entire nation is providing all-out support for the success of Myanmar sports, Myanmar athletes' winning of medals in the Asian level games gives impetus to the endeavours for promotion of Myanmar sports standard.

(5) Secretary-2 views 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition

YANGON, 4 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin C)o visited the 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition 9 at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning.

The Secretary-2, on arrival at the exhibition, was welcomed by Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Lt-Gen  Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Chief of Staff' (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Commander of No 3 Military Region Lt-Col Win Maung, members of Central Committee for Observance of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day, Chairman of Sub-committees and officials.

The Secretary-2 visited bookshops, scale model of private housing projects, booths of the ministries.

(6) Launglon Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 4 Jan - All the Executive Committee members of Launglon Township National League for Democracy, Taninthayi Division, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 28 December 1998.

Launglon Township NLD was first formed on 26 April 1991 with 16 EC members. Out of 16 EC members, 10 were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Launglon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 28 December, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(7) Independence Day quiz

YANGON, 4 Jan - Forms arc available for contestants to take part in the quiz on the 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition at K 10 per copy.

Winners will be presented K 50,000. Names of the winners will be announced in dailies one were completion of the exhibition, which began on 3 January at Tatmataw Convention Centre.

(8) Yangon observes Independence Day

YANGON, 4 Jan - The 51st Anniversary Independence Day was observed in townships in Yangon Division today and the message sent by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe was read on the occasions.

Yankin observed the Independence Day at No 1 Basic Education High School 1 in the township.

Similarly, Lanmadaw, Thanlyin, Hlinethaya and other townships in the Division observed the Independence Day at the respective places.

(9) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 4 Jan - Twelve members resigned from the National League for Democracy Party of
Wetlet Township, Sagaing Division, on 14 December 1998.

Twelve members of the National League for Democracy Party of Wetlet Township, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Wetlet Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned as they have no more wish to participate in party politics of NLD.

(10) Myawady TV retransmission stations open in five townships

YANGON, 4 Jan - Myawady Television retransmission station (Myitkyina) opened in Myothitgyi Ward in Myitkyina today.

Chairman of Kachin State Peace and Development Council Commander of Northern Command Maj-Gen Kyaw Win formally opened the station.

Myawady TV's retransmission station was also opened in Pyay today.

Present on the occasion were member Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Presiding Sayadaw of Jotikayon Pali Tekkatho Kyaungtaik Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Kondalajoti and Sayadaws, Commander of No 66 LID Col Aung Min and others.

Myawady TV retransmission stations were also opened in Toungoo, Chauk and Taunggyi.

(11) Outstanding students tour Yangon

YANGON, 4 Jan - Outstanding students of States and Divisions, heads of prize-winning schools and supervisors totaling 114, who attended the 1998-99 skills contest and exhibition, and the prize-giving ceremony making the School family Day, accompanied by officials of Education Planning and Training Department and Basic Education Department No 1, toured Yangon today.

They visited the Tooth Relic Pagoda in Mayangon Township, and donated K 4,770 for the pagoda funds.

Then, they visited the Shwedagon Pagoda, and donated K 4,795 for all-round renovation of the pagoda.

They also visited Yangon Zoological Gardens and 51st Anniversary Independence Day Exhibition.
