(1) Secretary-1 pays respects to Tipitakadhara Ovadacariya member Sayadaws
YANGON, 2 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, this afternoon went to Maha Pasana Cave Theindawgyi at Thiri Mingala Kaba Aye Hill, and paid respects to members of the Sangha who are taking 51st Tipitakadhara Selection Examination being held beginning 27 December.
On arrival there, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and party were welcomed by department heads and officials of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
The Secretary-1 and party paid respects to Tipitakadhara Ovadacariya member Sayadaws.
The Secretary-1 and party also paid respects to members of the Sangha who are taking the examination.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 inspected construction of the building in which member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee will reside.

(2) Secretary-1 inspects renovation of Karaweik Hall
YANGON, 2 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt today inspected renovation of Karaweik Hall, Kandawgyi.
Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, Secretary-1 arrived at Karaweik Hall at 12.30 pm.
He was welcomed there by Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aye Myint Kyu, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig Gen Thura Aye Myint Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Managing Director of Zay Kabar Co Ltd U Khin Shwe and others.
The Secretary-1 inspected works for renovation and construction in compound and beautifying of the hall, arrangements for receptions, and display of brochures, postcards and souvenirs. After according the work involved and arrangements for the tasks, the Secretary-1 recalled that Karaweik Hall was built with Myanmar works of art splendidly and grandly like a museum to enable visitors to study them at a pleasant place in Yangon, and stressed that it is essential to preserve these works of art and cultural objects.
He called for cooperation of all to renovate the hall to let the guests study Myanmar fine arts while enjoying the pleasant scenery in the environs.

(3) Secretary-1 visits Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image
YANGON, 2 Jan - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, together with Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, visited Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image on Gyadawya Street in Bahan Township this afternoon.
The Secretary-1 and party paid homage to Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image.
Col Hsan Hsint and officials reported on work for donating sacred Magaikdaw and Salwedaw to Maha Zeya Atula Marazein Bronze Buddha Image.
The Secretary-1 gave instructions on the work.

(4) MEC Chairman attends musical show held to raise education fund
YANGON, 2 Jan - A programme of music and songs accepted as Myanmar national modern classics was staged at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road today for raising Myanmar education fund.
The show was viewed by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and wife Dr Khin Win Shwe.
They arrived at the National Theatre at 6.50 pm and were welcomed there by Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and wife, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein and wife, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein and officials, Chairman of Ayekabar Music Lovers Group Dr Kin Mange Saw and members.
Together with the ministers and their wives and guests, the Secretary-1 and wife enjoyed the musical programme of Myanmar national modern classics.

(5) Secretary-2 inspects Maha Bandoola, Ngamoeyeik (Thingangyun) six-lane
YANGON, 2 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected Maha Bandoola Bridge Project and Ngamoeyeik (Thingangyun) Six-lane Bridge Project today.
Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the Secretary-2 arrived in Pazundaung Township this afternoon.
He was welcomed there by Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, Deputy Minister for Labour Brig-Gen Win Sein, Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung, Commander of No 4 Military Region Col Myo Myint and officials.
In the meeting hall, Deputy Superintending Engineer U Ohn Han and Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye of Maha Bandoola Bridge Project reported to the Secretary-2 on progress of the project and requirement of cement and steel rods, followed by a supplementary report by Deputy Minister U Tint Swe.
Afterwards, Deputy Minister U Pe Than explained arrangements of the ministry for worksheet safety to the Secretary-2 who gave instructions on the project.
The Secretary-2 then inspected building of piers and the approach bridge on the bank of Pazundaung.
Maha Bandoola Bridge is being built across Pazundaung Creek to link Pazundaung and Dawbon townships. It will be a suspension ridge installed with steel frames and 787.2 feet long. It will also be a 72-foot six-lane bridge which can withstand 60-ton loads.

(6) Minister for Foreign Affairs hosts New Year Reception for diplomats
YANGON, 2 Jan - A New Year Reception hosted by Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung for the Diplomatic Corps was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today at noon.
Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Heads of Diplomatic Missions, Heads of UN Specialized Agencies, Myanmar Ambassadors and Heads of Department of the Ministry attended the reception.
Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung welcomed the Heads of Missions and the Heads of UN Specialized Agencies to the Ministry and extended the season's greetings
He delivered a speech. He said 1998 was a year of auspicious anniversaries for Myanmar, as the country had celebrated the 50th Anniversary or the Golden Jubilee of Independence as well as the 10th anniversary of saving the nation from disintegration through chaos and anarchy. The past year also marked the first anniversary of the establishment of the State Peace and Development Council.
He went on to say that Myanmar today enjoys unprecedented peace and tranquillity.
In international relations, Myanmar continues to pursue an independent and active foreign policy, maintains friendly and cordial relations with all countries, particularly with its neighbors. he added.

(7) Final rites of Bhaddanta Neminda Mahathera held
YANGON, 2 Jan - The final rites of State Ovadacariya Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Neminda Mahathera, aged 91, vasa 71, of Chaukhtatgyi Phayagyitaik in Bahan Township was held at the Chaukhtatgyi Phayagyitaik at 1 pm today. The Sayadaw has passed away on 25 December.
Present on the occasion were members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee members of State/Division and Township Sangha Nayaka Committees and of the Chaukhtatgyi Phayagyitaik, Director-General U Sann Lwin of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt Col Maung Maung Shein, Director of Religious Affairs Department U Kyaw Nyein, Chairman of Bahan Township Peace and Development Council U Soe Win, disciples and relatives.
U Sann Lwin, Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein, U Kyaw Nyein and U Soe Win paid homage the remains with covering of velvet.
U Sann Lwin read the message sent by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa. Staff Officer of RAD U San Thin Hlaing then read Abhiyacana Katha. Later, the disciples and relatives bore the casket to the funeral pyre.

(8) Hpa-an stands third in First Soccer Tournament of SPETS (Lower Myanmar)
YANGON, 2 Jan - The third place match in the First Soccer Tournament of Sports plus Education Training school in Lower Myanmar was held at No 1 sport grounds at the Sports and Physical Education Institute this evening.
Hap-an downed Kawkareik 9-1 in the match. Thein Zaw Myint of Hpa-an won Man of the Match Award.
Among the spectators were Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of Sports and Physical Education Department, Principal of the institute U Kyaw Soe Myint and officials.
SPED (A) will meet with SPED (B) in final of the tournament at Youth Training Center in Thuwunna at 3.30 pm on 3 January. Admission is free for the students to watch the final match.

(9) First General Practitioners Conference begins
YANGON, 2 Jan - The First General Practitioners Conference of the Myanmar Medical Association began at the MMA hall on Theinbyu Road in Mingala Taungnyunt Township this morning.
Present on the occasion were Director-General of Health Department U Wan Maung, Chairman of MMA (Central) Professor U Myo Myint, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Chairman of First General Practitioners Conference Organizing Committee Chairman of General Practitioners Branch Dr Kyaw Myint, Vice-Chairman Dr Tin Aye and doctors.
MMA Chairman Professor U Myo Myint and Chairman of General Practitioners Branch Dr Kyaw Myint spoke on the occasion.
Later, Director-General Dr Wan Maung formally opened the sales centres opened on the occasion.

(11) Kyunsu Township NLD dissolved
YANGON, 2 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Kyunsu Township National League for Democracy, Taninthayi Division, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 28 December 1998.
Kyunsu Township NLD was first formed in February 1998 with 21 EC members. Out of 21 EC members, nine were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Kyunsu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned.
On 28 December personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.
