(1) Secretary-l inspects booths and exhibits of Independence Day Exhibition

YANGON, 1 Jan - Chairman of the Central Committee for Observance of the 51st Anniversary of the Independence Day Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt today inspected the booths and exhibits of the 51st Anniversary of the Independence Day Exhibition at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall on  U Wisara Road.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall at 6.30 pm.

He was welcomed there by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than, member of the Central Committee for Organizing the 51st Anniversary of the Independence Day Exhibition, chairmen of the subcommittees and officials.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected the booths and exhibits and gave necessary instructions to the officials.

(2) Secretary-2 receives national race representatives of Shan State (North)

YANGON, 1 Jan - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo received national race representatives U Than Htay, U Thein Htay and U Myint Lwin of Shan State (North) who called at the office of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs at 3.30 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Tin and officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office and Ministry of PBANRDA.

They discussed cultivation of crops and perennial plants to be extended in the region and regional development matters.

(3) Minister for Transport inspects shipyards

YANGON, 1 Jan - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe inspected Theinbyu Shipyard and Dalla Shipyard this morning. Accompanied by Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, he visited Theinbyu Shipyard of Myanma Port Authority.

Managing Director of MPA Col Thein Htay explained to them salient points of the shipyard, Assistant General Manager U Win Ko Ko construction of ships then and Deputy Minister U Pe Than relevant facts about it.

The minister at party then inspected producing of buoys, rails, oxygen and other function.

At Dalla Shipyard of Inland Water Transport, they heard a report on the shipyard's history, docking, services, the set targets and actual accomplishment of work, organizational set-up, implementation of welfare activities and upgrading of the shipyard presented by the deputy minister, Managing Director of IWT U Tun Aung Myint and officials.

Upgrading of the facilities at the shipyard will enable it to repair large coastal and oceangoing vessels and boost kyat and foreign currency earnings, noted the minister.

The minister and party inspected docking of Pyay Myanmar-1 vessel and other functions.

(4) Development work coordinated for Taninthayi Division

YANGON, 1 Jan - The Leading Committee for Regional Development of Taninthayi Division held a coordination meeting in the meeting hall of the Ministry of Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs. Chairman of the Leading Committee for Development of Region-wise Agriculture Sector Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo attended the meeting.

Present at the meeting were Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung and departmental officials.  Officer on Special Duty at the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Than Tint acted as a master of ceremonies.

In his address, the Secretary-2 said the leading committee and working committees have been formed to work for the development of Taninthayi Division, and it is necessary to make a precise assessment of progress of work and future tasks.

With regard to efforts for regional sufficiency in rice and development of production work of the agricultural sector, progress has been achieved to such an extent that there has been self-sufficiency in rice in some states and divisions.

It is also needed to achieve self-sufficiency in rice in Taninthayi Division, and in addition, the cultivation of rubber and oil palm which are thriving in Taninthayi Division, will be extended.

National private entrepreneurs are being engaged in paddy cultivation in Yangon and Ayeyawady Divisions, and therefore, encouragement is to be given to private entrepreneurs to carry out rubber and oil palm cultivation.

(5) Special course on financial rule concludes

YANGON, 1 Jan - Special Course 6/98 on financial rules of Development Affairs Department concluded at DAD Training School in Dagon Myothit (North) Township this morning.

Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye gave speeches on the occasion.

Also present on the occasion were Deputy Minister for PBANRDA U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Auditor-General U Khin Win, Director-General of Department for Development of Border Areas and National Races Col Wunna Maung Lwin, Director-General DAD Col Myo Myint, other officials, guests and trainees.

The auditor-general presented certificates to trainee' who had completed the four-week course.

Sixty accountants of DAD attended the course which was jointly conducted by DAD and Auditor-General's Office.

(6) Organising Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Awards presentation ceremony coordinated

YANGON, 1 Jan - A coordination meeting for organizing Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Awards presentation ceremony for this year was held at the Ministry of Information on Bo Aung Kyaw Street this morning

It was attended by Chairman of Pakokku U Ohn Pe Literary Award Trust Fund Supervisory Committee Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, directors-general and managing directors under the ministry, members of the committee Chairman of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association U Kyaw Aung (Kyaw Aung), retired Managing Director of Myanma Motion Pictures Enterprise U Maung Maung Khin (Thekkatho Maung Maung Khin), Adviser to the Ministry of Information U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin), Director-General of Budget Department U Kyi Shein, Director-General of Auditor-General's Office Daw Thin Thin and others.

Secretary of the Committee Director (News) of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Hla Tun acted as a master of ceremonies.

Making a speech at the meeting, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Aung Thein said most of the arrangements for the ceremony had been completed except designating the date and time for the ceremony, and those present are required to co-ordinate necessary matters for the ceremony in detail, especially in management.

(7) Camping, training of athletes for SEA Games discussed

YANGON, 1 Jan - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win today attended the coordination meeting on camping and training of athletes for the XX South-East Asian Games.

The meeting held at the National Indoor Stadium 1, Thuwunna, was also attended by Director;-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, Officer on Special Duty at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, advisers, officials of the SPED, and presidents and secretaries of sports federations.

The minister's address was followed by SPED Director U Maung Win's discussions on matters about the XX SEA Games.

Discussions focused on preparations for Myanmar to participate in the Games, selection, camping and training of the athletes.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win delivered the concluding address.

(8) Myanmar team recounts experiences of 13th Asian Games

YANGON, 1 Jan - Myanmar sports team recounted experiences of the 13th Asian Games at the National Indoor Stadium, Thuwunna, this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Vice-Chairman of the Committee Vice-Adjutant general Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw and officials.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win made a speech on the occasion.

Afterwards, Brig-Gen Maung Nyo explained about participation of Myanmar sports contingent in the 17th Asian Olympic Council General Assembly and condition of the Myanmar sports in the Asian Games.

Then, managers and coaches reviewed weakness and strengths of respective sports teams which took parts in the games.

Officials also replied to questions put by sports journalist.

(9) Target set to achieve 6.2 Per cent GDP growth

YANGON, 1 Jan - A work coordination meeting on implementation of annual plan targets of the projects for 1998-99 and drafting of plan targets of the projects for 1999-2000 was held at the Office of the Ministers today.

It was attended by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, directors general and directors of departments and organizations of the ministry, directors and staff officers of the Planning Department, and project planning officers of states, divisions and districts.

In his address, Minister U Soe Tha said that while all ministries are working strenuously for the nation to be peaceful, modern and developed, it is essential for the officials and personnel of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development to realize the aims of the State, uphold Our Three Main National Causes, implement the 12 National Objectives and understand the four-point People's Desire.

He spoke of the need for all to pay serious attention to the economy and constantly study the ups and downs in the region s economy.

(10) Stimulant tablets seized in Taunggyi

YANGON, 1 Jan - A total 4,797 stimulant tablets were seized from the house at 11/A, Kyauktalon Street, Thittaw and Taunggyi, Shan State, by a team comprising members of the local Defense Services Intelligence unit, police officials of departments concerned on 24 December morning. Two people a man and a woman were caught red-handed by the authorities who were watching the house act on information when they entered the house.

The two are Ma Khin Htwe Win (a) Ma Tu Tu Mar, 33, of 117, Thazin Street, Kyaunggyisu Ward, Taunggyi, and U Maung Maung, 50, of 11/A, Kyauktalon Street, Thitaw Ward, Taunggyi.

On further investigation, the authorities arrested two other people - Sai Chei, 36, of 303, Myoma Ward, Taunggyi, and Aung Moe (a) Aung Kyaw Zaw, 38, 69/B of Hawgon Ward, Nyaungshwe for drug trafficking.

Action is being taken against the four under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(11) Dawei Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 1 Jan - The Executive Committee members and all members of Dawei Township National League for Democracy, Taninthayi Division, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 27 December 1998.

Dawei Township NLD was first formed on 26 April 1991 with nine EC members. All the EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's party politics. They notified the office of Dawei Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 27 December, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the seals, signboard and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(12) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 1 Jan - Twenty-five members resigned from the National League for Democracy of Myinmu Township, Sagaing Division, 19 December.

Twenty-five members of Myinmu Township NLD, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Myinmu Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 19 December as they no longer wished to participate in party politics of NLD.
