(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Japan

YANGON, 23 Dec - On the occasion of the Birthday of His Majesty Akihito, Emperor of Japan, which falls on 23 December 1998, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, has sent messages of felicitations to His Majesty Akihito, Emperor of Japan and His Excellency Mr Keizo Obuchi, Prime Minister of Japan.

(2) Myanmar Paper Mill opens in Dagon Myothit (South)

YANGON, 22 Dec - Myanmar Paper Mill of Asia World Industries Ltd opened at the comer of Muse and Haka streets at Industrial Zone 1 in Dagon Myothit (South) Township this evening.

Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt unveiled the signboard.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing of AWIL and officials and guests.

Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe and U Tun Myint Naing formally opened it.

U Tun Myint Naing reported on the construction of the mill, machines installed at the mill, the aim of the mill, production of finished goods from used paper, manufacturing of cardboard and plans to produce stationery and newsprint.

The Secretary-1 gave suggestions on the work.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected the mill.

(3) Teachers urged to bring up students right from basic education level

YANGON, 22 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended ceremonies to open and hand over newly constructed and renovated Basic Education Primary School buildings in Dagon Seikkan Township in Yangon Division this afternoon.

The ceremonies were also attended by member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Electric Power Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, members of the District, Township and Ward Peace and Development Councils, the directors-general and officials of the departments under the Ministry of Construction and Ministry of Education, construction entrepreneurs, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, those of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, those of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and others.

(4) Secretary-2 attends fifth annual general meeting of Myanmar Industrial Producers Association

YANGON, 22 Dec - The fifth annual general meeting of Myanmar Industrial Producers Association was held at International Business Centre this evening, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Present were Deputy Minister for Energy U Tin Tun, Deputy Minister for Industry-2 U Thein Tun, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, EC members of the Union of Myanmar Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Chairman of MIPA U Htain Win and EC members and guests.

Chairman U Htain Win and EC member U Aung Lwin spoke.

Vice-Chairman U Thein Hlaing and General Secretary U Zaw Min Win submitted the minutes of previous annual meeting, report of CE Committee and financial statement for approval.

Altogether 31 well-wishers donated K 1,820,000 including K 500,000 by U Wai Phyo (Yathacho Industry Ltd), K 200,000 by U Htain Win (Myitmakha Engineering Co Ltd), K 100,000 each by U Mya Han (Fortune International Co Ltd), U Soe Tint (Soe Electrical and Machinery Co Ltd), U Kyi Shin (Yi Shin Co Ltd), U Win Aung (Dagon International Co Ltd) and Daw San San Yi (Super One International Co Ltd) for fund of the association.

(5) Mogaung Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 22 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Mogaung Township National League for Democracy, Kachin State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 10 December 1998.

Mogaung Township NLD, Kachin State, was first formed on 14 January 1990 with 22 EC members. Out of 22 EC members, eight were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Mogaung Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 10 December, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, flag, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(6) Secretary-2 gives instructions on UMCCI Office Building Project

YANGON, 22 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo gave necessary instructions on building of new office for Union of Myanmar Chamber of Commerce and Industry to officials at the office of UMCCI on Merchant Street this afternoon. The new office for UMCCI will be built in Bo Sun Pat Street here.

UMCCI President U Khin Maung Yi reported to the Secretary-2, Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Deputy Minister Commodore Myo Tint and officials on current functions of UMCCI Central Executive Committee Member of UMCCI U Win Aung on the plan of construction of new office.

The Secretary-2 instructed them to systematically build the new office of international standard with salesrooms, meeting rooms and car park.

(7) Production, export and local consumption of rice and crops coordinated

YANGON, 22 Dec - A coordination meeting on production, export and local consumption of rice and other crops of Myanmar was held at the Ministry of Commerce this morning.

It was attended by Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, Deputy Ministers for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint and Col Kyaw Hsan, advisers to the Ministry of Commerce, the Director-General and the Deputy Director-General of Trade Department, the Managing Director of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, Deputy Director-General of Planning Department Daw Than Nwe, Deputy Director-General Dr Kyi Win of Agriculture Planning Department, Director-General of Population Department Col Tin Yi, Director-General Dr Sein Tin of Central Statistical Organization, Managing Director U Tun Than of Myanma Agriculture Service and officials.

Those present discussed production, local consumption and export of rice, beans and pulses and edible oil crops.

The meeting ended in the afternoon with the concluding remarks by Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than.

(8) Ahlon Shipyards of Inland Water Transport inspected

YANGON, 22 Dec - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than inspected Ahlon Shipyards of Inland Water Transport this morning.

Managing Director of IWT U Tun Aung Myint reported on salient points of IWT, Senior Engineer U Zaw Tun on workshops of Ahlon Shipyards, annual targets for docking of boats and welfare.

The deputy ministers also reported on the work.

The minister and the deputy ministers inspected docking of boats, production of acetylene and gave instructions on staff welfare, growing of vegetables in the plot of the factory.

(9) More NLD members resign

YANGON, 22 Dec - Twelve Executive Committee members including Chairman of Kyaikmaraw Township National League for Democracy, Mon State, resigned from the party concerned.

Seven EC members of Kyaikmaraw Township NLD, Mon State, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Kyaikmaraw Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 27 October, three EC members followed suit on 19 November and two EC members on 26 November as they no longer wished to participate in political activities of NLD, totaling twelve, sent their letters of resignation to Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned.

(10) National Committee for Child Rights meets

YANGON, 22 Dec - The National Committee for Child Rights held a meeting at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement this afternoon, addressed by Chairman of the committee Minister for SWRR Brig-Gen Pyi Sone.

The minister said the committee is protecting the child rights, giving necessary guidelines for the respective departments to effectively implement laws concerning the child rights, arranging proper cooperation among the departments, welfare organizations and NGOs, assessing the developments, giving directives to effectively utilize the assistance rendered by UN agencies, international organizations, welfare organizations and NGOs, taking preventative measures against increase of juvenile crimes and preparing reports on accomplishments.

Secretary of the committee Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing presented the committee's accomplishments and future programmes.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, President of Myanmar Red Cross Society Dr Hla Bu, officials and others.

(11) Sepak Takraw teams back

YANGON, 22 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win welcomed back Myanmar women's and men's teams, which won gold and silver medals in Sepak Takraw (regu) and Sepak Takraw Circle Game contests in the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, at Yangon International Airport yesterday evening.

The athletes of the sepak takraw teams were led by Vice-Chairman of MOC and Vice-Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo.

They were welcome back at the airport by Officer on Special Duty at the Ministry of Sports Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau, officials of Sports and Physical Education Department, patrons of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation, presidents and secretaries of various sports federations, trainees of Sports plus Education Training Course, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and families.

(12) Minister inspects Kyauk-khwet Oil Field, Ayadaw Gas Field

YANGON, 22 Dec - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, inspected Kyauk-khwet Oil Field on 21 December.

The minister and party were welcomed there by Director (Special Project) U Kyi Shein and officials.

The minister inspected production, refining and storage of oil at No 31 Well and presented K 100,000 to the workers there as bonus.

The oil well has been producing five hundred and eighty barrels a day since 17 December. The digging of the well commenced in October.

The minister then gave instructions on future tasks.

He attended a ceremony to mark boosting of production at No 2 Fertilizer Plant in Kyunchaung.

The minister presented K 100,000 to workers of the factory for more production of fertilizer.

The production target of the fertilizer could be fulfilled before the end of 1998-99 fiscal year.

The minister also inspected digging of No. 455 Well in Ayadaw Natural Gas Field and gave instructions.
