(1)  Workers Training and Testing Centre opens

YANGON, 21 Dec - Ceremonies to open and make donations to the Workers Training and Testing Centre were held in front of the building of the Centre at No 43, Minye Kyaw Swa Street in Dagon Myothit (North) this morning. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt formally unveiled the plaque of the Centre.

Present on the occasion were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, the deputy commander of Yangon Command, ambassadors, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, department heads, the director-general of the Department of Labour and officials, President of Sinmar Tech Co Ltd Mr Yong Mee Him, President of Singapore Contractors Association, Mr Tan Kian Hoon, Managing Director of Sinmar Tech Co Ltd U Kyi Thein and officials and specially invited guests.

(2)  Robes donated to lecturers student nuns of Myanaung Nunnery

YANGON, 21 Dec - A ceremony to donate robes for lecturer and student nuns of Daw Nyanacari Myanaung Nunnery by Qusi Chansi Buddhist Association was held at the nunnery on Kyundaw Street, Sangyoung Township, today.

Present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Minister at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Director of Public Relations and Psychological Warfare Brig-Gen Khin Aung Myint, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, member of Yangon City Development Committee Col Thaung Wai, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of Sasana U Sann Lwin, Director-General of Social Welfare Department Col Sit Myaing, Commander of No 3 Military Region Lt-Col Win Maung, Chairman of Yangon West District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Shein and officials and members of Qusi Chansi Buddhist Association.

Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasami of Kammathan Kyaungtaik invested the congregation with the Eight Precepts.

A member of Qusi Chansi Buddhist Association offered thingan to Sayadaw Bhaddanta Pannasami.

Members of Qusi Chansi Buddhist Association later offered robes for 250 lecturer and student nuns of the nunnery to Nayaka Sayagyi Daw Khemari and Taikoke Daw Zayawadi.

Sayadaw Shi Shin Tang and monks of Qusi Chansi Buddhist Association also donated cash to the nuns and Kau Shoan nuns' association offered K 340,000 to Myanaung Nunnery.

The ceremony ended with sharing of merits for the pious deeds done.

(3)  Zaungtu Hydel Power Project inspected

YANGON, 21 Dec - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut and officials of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise inspected Zaungtu Hydel Power Project on 18 December.

Project Director U Win Kyi, Project Manager U Maung Maung and officials reported on progress of work, work being undertaken and tasks to be carried out.

The minister gave instructions on completion of the project in time in accord with standard set, collection of materials, minimizing loss and wastage, proper handling and repairing of machines, work-site safety, thrift, staying away from party politics, health and welfare for service personnel.

The minister inspected the site on 19 and 20 December and also met service personnel.

(4)  Number of crimes markedly declines two years after formation of Crime Reduction, Education and Information Committee

YANGON, 21 Dec - Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing met with members of the Crime Reduction, Education and Information Committee, departmental heads and officials of the literary, art, music, thabin and traditional arts and crafts asiayons at the Ministry of Home Affairs today.

In his address, Col Tin Hlaing spoke of the tasks of the Crime Reduction, Education and Information Committee, reviewing its accomplishments and giving suggestions on future tasks, and thanked the departments and the literary and art associations for their cooperation in the endeavours for community peace and tranquillity and prevalence of law and order.

Compared with the number of the crimes and the cases occurring due to lack of social code of ethics in various parts of the world, Myanmar has very few such crimes and cases, he said, speaking of the need to take necessary measures to prevent occurrence of these cases in Myanmar community.

He said that occurrence of crimes declined markedly two years after formation of the committee due to the committee's effective implementation of tasks as well as participation of media.

The police need to have law enforcement idea and must be honest and incorruptible, kind, fair and understanding, he said and pointed out that they need to get the support of the public in crime reduction measures and also convince the public of the police's duty to maintain peace and tranquillity for prevalence of law and order.

He said that a lot of countries, who had been free from the yoke of colonialism, have to remove the ill legacy of the colonialism and build appropriate modern policing systems in their efforts to promote the role of the police.

He noted that the endeavours of the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control of the Ministry of Home Affairs must be put on record as noble activities in the nation's conviction for eradication of narcotic drugs, he called for cooperation all concerned to join in this task.

Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung and Director-General of Myanmar Police Force Col Soe Win spoke about the crime reduction measures and cooperation of the public and the police in the tasks.

A general round of discussions followed.

(5)  Minister for Transport inspects Dawbon Shipyards

YANGON, 21 Dec - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Ministers Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than inspected Dawbon Shipyards this morning.

Director-General of Marine Administration Department U Soe Win reported on organization set-up of the shipyards, reconstruction of building, expenditure and welfare for service personnel and the deputy ministers and officials on requirements.

The minister gave instructions on reconstruction of buildings in the Maha Bandoola Bridge Project area, fuel and staff welfare.

The minister and party inspected docking of small boats and warehouses and construction of new office.

(6)  Over 27 Kilos of raw opium seized

YANGON, 21 Dec - A combined team comprising members of Defence Services Intelligence, Myanmar Police Force and service personnel on information searched the house of Mwe Hawla, 33, son of U Htan Nin of Htatemu Village-tract in Phakant Township, Kachin State and seized 17 packets of raw opium weighing 27.5 Kilos and a white motorcycle used in trafficking the drugs.

Legal action is being taken against him according to law.

(7)  Paletwa Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 12 Dec - All the Executive Committee members of Paletwa Township National League for Democracy, Chin State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 18 November 1998.

Paletwa Township NLD was first formed on 6 November 1988 with 12 EC members. All EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Paletwa Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned.

On 18 November 1998, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(8)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 12 Dec - A total of 119 members resigned from the National League for Democracy Party of Einme Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 11 December.

A total of 119 members of the National League for Democracy Party of Einme Township, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Einme Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned as they no longer wished to participate in political activities of NLD.

(9)  Minister inspects Metallurgy Research and Development Centre

YANGON, 21 Dec - Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung and Adviser U Kyaw Soe at Myanmar Scientific and Technological Research Department yesterday inspected research work at Metallurgy Research and Development Centre in Ela.

The minister was briefed on research work by acting Head of Department U Thet Lwin.

The minister inspected experimental production of activated carbon and other metals and samples at the laboratory.

(10)  Minister visits Ela Metallurgical Research and Development Centre

YANGON, 21 Dec - Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, accompanied by Adviser to Science and Technology Research Department U Kyaw Soe, arrived at Ela Metallurgical Research and Development Centre yesterday.

They were welcomed there by acting Head of EMRDC U Thet.

U Thet also explained research works being conducted at the centre.

The minister toured the centre and gave instructions.

(11)  IRD holds third quarterly coordination meeting

YANGON, 21 Dec - The third quarterly work coordination meeting of the Internal Revenue Department of the Ministry of Finance and Revenue for the 1998-99 financial year was held at the IRD Head Office on Pansodan Street today.

It was attended by Minister for Finance and Revenue U Khin Maung Thein, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Than Tun, Governor of the Central Bank of Myanmar U Kyaw Kyaw Maung, Director-General of the IRD U Chit Swe, departmental heads, state/division revenue officers and other officials.

In his address, Minister U Khin Maung Thein emphasized the importance of proper collection of taxes, which go into the State budget and will be utilized in public welfare services.

It is essential that every citizen needs to pay dues in accord with the law, he said and noted that the sum collected by the IRD has increased year after year with the development of market economic system.

He urged the IRD to systematically investigate the sources from which taxes can be collected.

The meeting ended in the evening.
