(1) State Peace and Development Council Chairman and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe meets Heads of State/Government of ASEAN member nations Socialist Republic of Vietnam Basic principles of ASEAN
YANGON, 18 Dec - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe called on Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the Prime Minister's Office at the Government House at 5 pm on 14 December.
Present together with Senior General Than Shwe at the call were Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung and Ambassador of Myanmar to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam U Khin Soe.
Prime Minister Mr Phan Van Khai was accompanied at the call by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Vu Khoan, Deputy Minister at the Government Office Mr Doam Manh Giao and senior officials.
Senior General Than Shwe and Mr Phan Van Khai discussed reaffirmation of the basic principles of the ASEAN, avoidance of acts that may harm the principles and further flourishing of the principle of the non-interference.
The two leaders also agreed to the promotion of Myanmar-Vietnam cooperation in ASEAN activities.

YANGON, 18 Dec - President Mr J Ejercito Estrada of the Republic of the Philippines called on Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar and Prime Minister Senior General Than Shwe in Onyx Room at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi at 6 pm on 15 December.

Senior General Than Shwe emphasized the importance of further consolidation of the ASEAN. He stated though it could be said that Myanmar was not totally free from the regional economic turmoil, the affects of the economic turmoil that hit the nation were not as harsh as in other countries, explaining the endeavors to maintain nation peace and stability and to gain good economic foundations.
The two leaders also agreed to promote bilateral economic and technical cooperation.

YANGON, 18 Dec - Prime Minister Mr Samdech Hun Sen of the Royal Government of Cambodia called on Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Than Shwe at Hanoi Daewoo Hotel in Hanoi at 3 pm on 14 December.

They also agreed to the appointment of resident ambassadors in capital cities of both nations to further enhance bilateral relations.

YANGON, 18 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Secretary-General of Asian Productivity Organization (APO) Mr Takashi Tajima at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.
Present together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Ambassador of Myanmar to Japan U Khin Maung Thein, Director-General of Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet and Director-General of Political Affairs Department U Nyunt Maung Shein.
The guest was accompanied by Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar Mr Kazuo Asakai as he called at Dagon Yeiktha.

(7) First Education and Technology Exhibition 98 opens
YANGON, 18 Dec - The First Education and Technology Exhibition 98 sponsored by New Link Co Ltd of Myanmar Computer Co Ltd (MCC) opened at the Tatmadaw Convention Hall this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Chairman of Myanmar Computer Technology Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

YANGON, 18 Dec - Families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy, Air) and well-wishers donated rice and edible oil to Mary Chapman's School for the Deaf and Dumb on Thantaman Street in Dagon Township this afternoon, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations and Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.

YANGON, 18 Dec - Twenty-two members resigned from the National League for Democracy Party of Laymyethna Township, Ayeyawady Division, on 21 November.
Twenty-two members of Laymyethna Township NLD party, Ayeyawady Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Laymyethna Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 21 November as they no longer wished to participate in political activities of NLD.
Likewise, 39 members of Myingyan Township National League for Democracy party, Mandalay Division, tendered their letters of resignation to Myingyan Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 8 December as they no longer wished to take part in political activities of NLD.

(11) "Pyo-khin-thit" Art and Sculpture Exhibition opens at National Museum
YANGON, 18 Dec - "Pyo-khin-thit" Art and Sculpture Exhibition sponsored by the Research and Training Division of the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture opened at the National Museum on Pyay Road today.
The opening ceremony held at the National Museum this morning was attended by Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Deputy Minister U Soe Nyunt, departmental heads of the ministry, Rector of the University of Culture Lt-Col Zaw Than and officials, patrons, Chairman U Thaung Han and ECs of Myanmar Artists and Artisans Asiayon, and guests.
Minister U Win Sein delivered the opening address. The exhibition features works of the teachers and students of the State School of Fine Arts (Yangon) and that of Mandalay who were with the schools from 1952 to 1998, as well as the works of professional artists and sculptors.
Minister U Win Sein formally opened the exhibition.
There are 410 water-colour paintings, 167 oil paintings and 70 sculptures, and 528 paintings and 70 sculptures of teachers of the fine arts schools, 49 paintings of outsider artists, 140 paintings and 70 sculptures collected by the schools, and 437 paintings of the outsiders.
Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung visited the exhibition at 10 am.
The exhibition is open to all from 9 am to 5 pm daily up to 28 December.

(12) Mayor inspects land reclamation, paddy cultivation in Taikkyi
YANGON, 18 Dec - Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, accompanied by Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win and officials, inspected reclamation of virgin and fallow lands and paddy cultivation carried out by YCDC near Udo-Aphyauk road in Taikkyi Township this morning.
Chairman of Work Committee for Cultivation, member of YCDC Col Thaung Wai, Secretary of the work committee Head of Administration Department U Myint Swe and members briefed the mayor on successful paddy fields cultivated on the new lands, water supply for work site to reclaim the fallow and virgin lands with labour power and mechanical power and cultivation of onion, potato, chili and beans and pulses.
Later, the mayor gave instructions to the officials and left there this afternoon.

(13) Myanmar London Golf Tour continues second leg
YANGON, 18 Dec - The second leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour jointly-organized by Myanmar Golf Federation and Professional Golfers Association (PGA-Myanmar) and sponsored by Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd continued at Ayethayar Golf Club in Taunggyi, Shan State, this morning.
Soe Kyaw Naing (a) Soe Soe led with 151 strokes in the professional event on the second day, followed by Myint Thaung with 152 and Aung Hla Han with 154.
Leading players in men's amateur event on the second day were Aung Win with 148 strokes, Min Naing with 149 and Aung Zaw Moe with 155.
Khin Thu Thu stroked 173 in women's amateur event on the second day and Nu Nu Lwin with 176 and Yin Yin Aye with 184. The tour will continue on 19 December.
