(1)  Paunglaung multi-purpose dam project to serve as an exemplary one

YANGON, 16 Dec - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo today inspected Paunglaung Project for generation of hydro-electric power and water supply for agriculture purpose in Pyinmana Township and discussed agricultural production in Yamethin District, Mandalay Division. The Secretary-2 left here at 10 am by Tatmadaw flight for Toungoo.

He was accompanied by Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs U Kyaw Tin and officials.

The Secretary-2 and party were welcomed at Toungoo Airport by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Southern Command Maj-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Thura Maung Ni, Brig-Gen Thura Myint Thein (Air) of Toungoo Station, Brig-Gen Aung Win and officials of Oktwin Station.

(2)  Seminar held on securities market

YANGON, 16 Dec - A two-day seminar on securities market co-sponsored by Central Bank of Myanmar and Tokyo Stock Exchange of Japan opened at Sedona Hotel this morning.

Present were Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin, Deputy Minister for Finance and Revenue Brig-Gen Than Tun, Deputy Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office U Set Maung, Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic Development Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, heads of department under the Ministry of Finance and Revenue, retired Chairman of Institute of Fiscal and Monetary Policy of Japan Mr Toshihiko Amano, officials and guests.

Brig-Gen Than Tun spoke on the occasion.

Mr Toshihiko Amano spoke words of thanks.

Experts of the Ministry of Finance of Japan, Tokyo Stock Exchange and Daiwa Institute of Research gave talks on laws concerning Tokyo Stock Exchange, administrative functions and the sector of stock exchange.

(3)  20 MTA members exchange arms for peace

YANGON, 16 Dec - The State Peace and Development Council is striving for national reconsolidation, upholding Our Three Main National Causes, and is implementing the 12 political, economic and social objectives for emergence of an enduring State Constitution and a peaceful, modern and developed nation.

After realizing the goodwill and endeavour of the Government, armed group members are exchanging arms for peace individually or in groups, abandoning their destructive acts which do not benefit the nation.

Economic committee member Kyu Hsan and 19 members of remnant MTA armed group bringing together with them one M-20 pistol, one .45 pistol, three .38 revolvers, one 9mm pistol, three China-made pistols, two .32 pistols, four AK-47s, six M-22s, two .22 long-barrel pistols, 254 rounds of ammunition and 15 magazines exchanged arms for peace at the regional battalion in Tachilek, Triangle Region Command region, on 14 December.

A ceremony to exchange arms for peace was held at the parade ground of the regional battalion on 14 December.

Present were Tactical Operations Commander Col Soe Thein, Chairman of Tachilek District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Ko Ko Htay, officials, members of Union Solidarity and Development Association and town elders.

Col Soe Thein spoke on the occasion.

Pvt Shan Han, on behalf of the all members, begged the public to pardon them for their past misdeeds.

Col Soe Thein and Lt-Col Ko Ko Htay through the Triangle Region Command presented cash assistance to the MTA member individually and fulfilled the requirements.

There are still more members of armed groups to exchange arms for peace.

(4)  Kya-in-Seikkyi Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 16 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Kya-in-Seikkyi Township National League for Democracy, Kayin State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on their own volition on 9 November 1998.

Kya-in-Seikkyi Township NLD was first formed on 10 November 1989 with five EC members. Out of five EC members, four were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership on their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Kya-in-Seikkyi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned. On 9 November, personnel of the township NLD dissolved it by handing over the documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(5)  Victorious weight-lifting, sepak takraw teams arrive back

YANGON, 16 Dec - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win welcomed back Myanmar women's weight-lifting team and women's and men's sepak takraw teams, which participated in the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, at Yangon International Airport yesterday evening.

They were welcomed back by Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau, Deputy Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Lt-Col Thein Aung and officials.

Chairperson of Myanmar Women's Sports Federation Professor Daw May May Yi and executives, officials of Myanmar Weight-lifting Federation, trainees of Sports and Education Combined Training School and families who presented the bouquets to the athletes.

Myanmar women's weight-lifting team bagged one gold, six silvers and one bronze in the 11th Asian Women's Weight-lifting Championship in Bangkok, Thailand.

(6)  Attorney General's Office, law offices donate dry rations and edible oil to Maha Razikayon Kyaungtaik

YANGON, 16 Dec - Under the patronage of Attorney-General U Tha Tun, staff members of the Office of Attorney-General and various levels of law offices donated second time dry rations, edible oil and gram to Maha Razikayon Kyaungtaik on Shan Street in Sangyoung Township this morning.

The congregation received the Five Precepts from Sayadaw U Dhammapiya of the Kyaungtaik. They then offered dry rations, edible oil and gram worth K 130,000 to the Sayadaw who delivered a sermon. The congregation shared merit gained.

Present on the occasion were Attorney-General U Tha Tun and wife, Deputy Attorney-General U Khin Maung Aye and wife, directors and deputy directors, officials of head office and staff members.

(7)  ROK company to set up garment factory

YANGON, 16 Dec - Pan-Pacific Trading Co Ltd of the Republic of Korea agreed to lease land from Public Works to set up a garment factory.

Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun spoke on the occasion.

Chairman of the Korean company Mr Byong Tae Lim and Managing Director of PW U Shwe Win signed the contract at PW Head Office this morning.

Mr Byong Tae Lim also presented K 1 million to welfare society of PW.

Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Director-General of Human Settlement and Housing Development Department U Arnt Kyaw and officials were also present.

(8)  More NLD members resign

YANGON, 16 Dec - Nine members resigned from the National League for Democracy Party of Matupi Township, Chin State, on 1 December.

Altogether nine members of Matupi Township NLD party, Chin State, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Matupi Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned on 1 December as they no longer wished to participate in political activities of NLD.

(9)  Deputy Minister for Construction leaves for China

YANGON, 16 Dec - Myanmar delegation led by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint left here by air this afternoon for the People's Republic of China.

Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint and officials will inspect production of frames in China Chenzhou Highway Engineering Machinery Works, which are to be used for Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk) project across the Ayeyawady River and Min Chaung Bridge project and factories of China Shipbuilding Trading Company Limited and China National Constructional & Agricultural Machinery Import and Export Corporation.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by heads of departments and officials under the Ministry of Construction.

The delegation comprises Superintending Engineer (Planning) of Public Works U Soe Han of Anawrahta Bridge (Chauk) and Superintending Engineer (Bridge) U Han Zaw as members.

(10)  Present globalization of culture poses strong challenge to maintenance of national lifestyles, national values

YANGON, 16 Dec - The International Conference on Post-Colonial Society and Culture in Southeast Asia organized by the Historical Research Department of the Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar) under the Ministry of Education began at the International Business Centre on Pyay Road here at 9 am today and Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo delivered the opening address.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Deputy Minister for Education Dr Than Nyunt, Ambassadors of foreign embassies in Myanmar, Chief of Armed Forces Training Maj-Gen Win Myint, Defence Services Inspector-General Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Chief of Staff (Navy) Capt Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint, the heads of department and officials, members of the Myanma Historical Commission, international researchers, officials of the Ministry of Education and guests.
