(1) Secretary-1 visits Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun) Project, Maha Bandoola Bridge-Project
YANGON, 13 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun) Project this morning and gave instructions to officials on the work.
Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint and officials, arrived at the project site at 10.30 am.
They were welcomed there by Managing Director of Public Works U Shwe Win and officials.
The Secretary-1 and party inspected the construction work of pier No 4 and the approach road.
At the project office, Managing Director U Shwe Win and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Myint Lwin reported on progress of the project and conditions of the work to be done.
The Secretary-1 gave instructions for timely completion of the project, and left the project site.
Ngamoeyeik Bridge (Thingangyun), spanning Ngamoeyeik Creek, links Thingangyun Township and Dagon Myothit (South) Township. The main bridge is 700 feet long. The approach roads on the banks of Thingangyun Township and Dagon Myothit (South) Township are 1,400 feet and 1,500 feet long respectively. The bridge has a 72-foot-wide six-lane motor-way and two six-foot-wide pedestrian lanes. The reinforced bridge can bear 60-ton loads.
Then, the Secretary-1 and party proceeded to Maha Bandoola Bridge Project in Pazundaung Township.
At the work-site office, Superintending Engineer U Khin Maung Aye and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Ohn Han reported on progress of the project and conditions of the work to be done.
The Secretary-1 called for completion of the project in time.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 and party inspected the project.
Mayor U Ko Lay, Managing Director U Shwe Win and officials conducted them around the project.
Then, the Secretary-1 and party left the project at 11.30 am.
Maha Bandoola Bridge, spanning Pazundaung Creek, links Pazundaung and Dawbon Townships. The main bridge is 787 feet long and the total length of approach structures is 2,856 feet long. The bridge has a six-lane 72-foot-wide motor-way and two 6-foot-wide pedestrian lanes. The bridge is a suspension bridge and can support 60-ton loads.

(2) Secretary-1 accepts donation of gold ornaments to Shwedagon Pagoda
YANGON, 13 Dec - A ceremony to donate gold ornaments to the Shwedagon Pagoda was held at the Museum Tazaung on the platform of the pagoda this morning, attended by Patron of Shwedagon Pagoda General Renovation Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
Present also were Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Chairman of Yangon City .Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Ministers for Transport Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and U Pe Than, Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, members of Board of Trustees, donors and guests.
The congregation received the Five Precepts from member of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Pakhan Kyaungtaik Sayadaw of Shwebo Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa and offertories were presented to the Sayadaws.
In memory of late U Khin Maung Oo, proprietor Daw Ma Ma Lay of Shwetamar oil mill in Sagaing donated a gold bangle and a gold chain each weighing four ticals and a gold comb weighing over two ticals to the Secretary-1.
Secretary-1 presented a certificate of honour to the donor.
Sayadaw Bhaddanta Vimalabhivamsa delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits.
The Secretary-1 and party inspected bronze plates to be used in gilding.
The Secretary-1 then paid obeisance to the pagoda and inspected the renovation work.

(3) Secretary-l attends ground-breaking ceremony of Theindaw of Mingun Tipitakat Maha Ganhtawin Sarthintaik in Dagon Myothit (East)
YANGON, 13 Dec - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ground-breaking ceremony of Theindaw of Mingun Tipitakat Maha Ganhtawin Sarthintaik in Dagon Myothit (East) Township and cornerstone-laying ceremony of Sankyaung of the Sixth Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Bhaddanta Vayamindabhivamsa this morning.
Present were Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Labour Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint, personnel of religious organizations, well-wishers and guests.
The Secretary-1 and the ministers laid the foundations of the Theindaw of Mingun Tipitakat Maha Ganhtawin and sprinkled scented water and performed the rites of golden and silver showers.
Next, the cornerstone laying ceremony of Tipitakat Maha Ganhtawin Sarthintaik was held; the Secretary-1 laid the nine gems silver casket.
At the auspicious time, the Secretary-1 and the ministers laid the bricks of the cornerstone.
Afterwards, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt laid the stone plaque of the Sarthintaik. The Secretary-1 and the ministers sprinkled scented water and performed the rites of golden and silver showers.
The first cash donation for Sankyaung of Tipitakat Maha Ganhtawin Sarthintaik was then held.
The congregation received the Five Precepts from Joint Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Yadana Manaung Sayadaw of PyinOoLwin Agga Maha Pandita Bhaddanta Panna Thiha.
Secretary-1 and ministers presented offertories to the Sayadaws.
In all, 23 well-wishers presented K 15 million including K 2.5 million by U Kyaw Thein and brothers and sisters in memory of late U Kyu (Retired Chief Executive Officer) and Daw Khin Myint, K 3 million each by U Maung Maung Lwin-Daw Khin Nyo and Daw Kyin Aye and son Maung Aung Myat, K 2 million by U Kyaw Kyaw of OK Gold Shop, K 1 million by U Kyaw Tun and K 555,000 by Daw Khin family to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, the ministers and the mayor.
Sixth Tipitakadhara Tipitakakovida Bhaddanta Vayamindabhivamsa (Yesagyo Sayadaw) delivered a sermon and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

(4) Dagon BEHS 1 holds PTA meeting for 1998-99 academic year
YANGON, 13 Dec - The PTA meeting of No 1 Basic Education High School, Dagon, for 1998-99 academic year was held in conjunction with the prize-giving ceremony in Dagon Thiri Hall of the school today, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe.
Also present were Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council, Director-General of No 3 Basic Education Department (Yangon City) Col Thein Aung and officials, patrons of the PTA, the chairman and members of the school's honorary committee, the chairman and executives of the PTA, teachers, prize winners and parents.
Headmaster U Kyaw Kyaw and Chairman of the school's honorary committee U Hla Tin delivered addresses.
Also speaking on the occasion, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo said it was the day of honour for parents, teachers and pupils and noted that the school has earned a good name in the fields of promoting education standard of pupils and observance of discipline.
He called for efforts of the school to live up to its dignity and promote its standard more and more.
Uplift of health, fitness and education standards of the entire nation' is one of the four social objectives laid down and being implemented by the government, he said, adding that while the government is striving all-round for enhancement of the education standard good results are being achieved because of parents' cooperation.
He said Dagon BEHS 1's accomplishments in all-round development works are satisfactory and called for continued cooperation of parents and teachers to nurture outstanding students inculcating in them good sense of discipline and good morality.
Ministers Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Deputy Ministers Col Thaik Tun and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung also made speeches.
Afterwards, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo, ministers, deputy ministers and officials presented awards to the students outstanding in the 199798 Basic Education High School Examination and in respective grades, duty-conscious teachers and members of the school hygiene committee.
Later, the Secretary-2 and party went looking round in the language proficiency class, art training class and multi-media classroom.

(6) Myaybon Township NLD dissolved
YANGON, 13 Dec - The Executive Committee members and all members of Myaybon Township National League for Democracy, Rakhine State, tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD of their own volition on 15 November 1998.
Myaybon Township NLD, Rakhine State, was first formed on 6 November 1988 with 25 EC members. Out of 25 EC members, 23 were left. The remaining EC members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership of their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to participate in the political activities of the NLD. They notified the office of Myaybon Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the party concerned.
On 15 November, personnel of the Township NLD dissolved it by handing over the signboard, seals and documents to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission.

(7) Minister inspects site for construction of University of Culture in Mandalay Division
YANGON, 13 Dec - Minister for Culture U Win Sein, together with officials, inspected the site designated for construction of the University of Culture on the side of the motor road leading to Shwesayan Pagoda in Patheingyi Township, Mandalay Division, yesterday morning.
The minister inspected the designated site of the university and the flow of Dokehtawady River and the creeks near by, which pass through near the site.
Officials and local people reported on the present condition of the site and condition of the flow of the river and creeks in the rainy season with maps.
The minister then observed the condition of soil at the designated place.
He gave instructions on construction of the university representing the upper Myanmar and growing of shade trees, flowering trees and crops in the environs.
Then, the minister went on to Tampawady Ward.
He inspected the bronze statue of King Alaungmintaya who established Third Myanmar Empire, and gave instructions on the work.

(8) Myanmar women weight-lifters win 3 silver, 2 bronze
YANGON, 13 Dec - Aye Aye Aung of Myanmar stood second in Women's 75-kilo and-above Weight-lifting Contest of the XIII Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, this afternoon.
The People's Republic of China team was first with 270 kilos, Aye Aye Aung of Myanmar second with 252.5 kilos and China (Taipei) third with 242.5 kilos in the contest.
After the contest, Myanmar women's weight-lifting team bagged three silver and two bronze.

YANGON, 13 Dec - Altogether 16 members of Shwebo Township National League for Democracy, Sagaing Division, tendered their resignations on 30 November.
Sixteen members of Shwebo Township NLD party, Sagaing Division, on their own volition, tendered their resignations by sending letters of resignation to Shwebo Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission Office and the party concerned since they no longer wished to participate in political activities of NLD.

(10) MIC Secretary leaves for Singapore
YANGON, 13 Dec - Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council and Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung left here this morning to attend advanced round-table on effect of foreign investment and poverty eradication to be held in Singapore on 14 and 15 December.
The minister was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, First Secretary of Embassy of Singapore Mr William Chik Kam and departmental officials.
The minister is accompanied by his Personal Staff Officer.

(11) Minister inspects No 1 Machine and Machinery Equipment Industry
YANGON, 13 Dec - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, accompanied by Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials, toured No 1 Machine and Machinery Equipment Industry (Nyaungchehtauk) in Padaung Township, Pyay District, yesterday.
He was welcomed there by Managing Director Col Kyaw Win of Myanma Machine Tools and Electrical Industries, Managing Director Lt-Col Soe Thein of Myanma Automobile and Diesel Engine Industries, Managing Director U Than Tun of Myanma Agricultural Machinery Industries, general managers and personnel.
In the meeting hall, General Manager U Pe Than Hlaing reported to them on the salient points about No 1 Machine and Machinery Equipment Industry (Nyaungchehtauk), items manufactured, production capacity, difficulties encountered and staff welfare.
Minister Maj-Gen Saw Lwin gave instructions on performance of duties, staff welfare and retaining production capacity.
Also speaking on the occasion, Deputy Minister U Thein Tun called for efforts for realization of the production target.
Later, the minister and party inspected machine tools assembly, machine shop and manufacturing of transformer, PVC wire and other workshops.
