In his address, the Secretary-l said:  Members of the Cabinet and the National Health Committee, representatives of the UN organizations, international and national non-governmental organizations, including the Rotary International, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to deliver the keynote address on this auspicious occasion. Today' s ceremony inaugurates the launching of the Fourth Year National Immunization Days nationwide which is being implemented as a national duty.

In order to ensure that the new generation is fit and healthy, the first, second and third year NIDs were launched and 96%, 99% and 97% coverage was attained respectively. All of you who took part in these historic occasions should be very proud of yourselves. I am heartened to learn that all of you are also going to be actively involved in the Fourth Year NIDS.

The State Peace and Development Council is providing special support in order to make the Fourth Year NIDs the success like the First, Second and Third Year's. At a time when the countries of the world are united in their endeavors to eradicate polio by the year 2000, Myanmar together with her neighboring countries of Nepal, India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Thailand and Yunnan province in China are also having their National Immunization Days in December and January as a regional synchronization strategy like last year.

By doing this, poliomyelitis transmission will be interrupted and eradication of polio will be achieved in the near future. In Myanmar, the number of reported poliomyelitis cases in 1988 was 60 but there was only 9 cases in 1996.

In this way, we will also be implementing the social objective of "Uplift of health, fitness and education standards of the entire nation".
