(1) Secretary-1 presents prizes to outstanding students and schools Expenditures on education increased up to K 5,108.30 million in 1997-98

YANGON, 18 Nov - Chairman of the Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented prizes to the Basic Education High School students for their outstanding performance in the 1997-98 academic year and Basic Education High Schools for their outstanding performance all round at Basic Education High School No 2 in Sangyoung Township at 8.30 am today.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board U Maung Maung Gyi, Auditor-General Brig-Gen Tin Aye, Deputy Ministers Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, the directors-general, deputy directors-general of the departments under the Ministry of Education, rectors, examiners, directors and personnel of the prize distribution ceremony organizing committee, the principals of the prize-winning schools, those of Basic Education High Schools in Yangon Division, guests, well-wishers, outstanding students and their parents and guardians.

Minister for Education U Than Aung presented Basic Education High School all-round outstanding performance awards to headmasters and headmistress of No 1 Basic Education High School in Myitkyina Township, Kachin State, No 1 Basic Education High School in Loikaw Township, Kayah State, No 1 Basic Education High School in Hpa-an Township, Kayin State, No 1 Basic Education High School in Falan Township, Chin State, No 2 Basic Education High School in Monywa Township, Sagaing Division, No 1 Basic Education High School in Dawei Township, Taninthayi Division, No 1 Basic Education High School in Bago, Bago Division, No 1 Basic Education High School in Aunglan Township, Magway Division, No 1 Basic Education High School in Pyinmana Township, Mandalay Division, No 8 Basic Education High School in Mawlamyine Township, Mon State, No 6 Basic Education High School in Sittway Township, Rakhine State, No 2 Basic Education High School in Latha Township, Yangon Division, No 7 Basic Education High School in Taunggyi Township, Shan State (South), Tachilek Basic Education High School in Tachilek Township, Shan State (East), No 1 Basic Education High School in Kyaukme Township, Shan State (North) and No 1 Basic Education High School in Hinthada Township, Ayeyawady Division.

After the ceremony, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt had photos taken together with the outstanding students and schools heads of Basic Education High Schools that won all-round outstanding performance awards.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected multi-media classroom of No 2 Basic Education High School in Sangyoung Township.

(2) Artistes honoured for participation in play on history of Shwedagon Pagoda with generosity and noble spirit

YANGON, 18 Nov - Artistes who took part in a play on history of Shwedagon Pagoda were honoured today at Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon, addressed by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The general renovation of the Shwedagon was car ride out now again over 20 years after it had been renovated in 1975, he noted.

Film artistes and vocalists with their artistic skills had taken part in the renovation project keeping in their mind the ardent generosity and noble spirit, he lauded.

The Shwedagon Pagoda General Renovation Project with 34 different tasks was started in 1995 and reconstruction of the four stairways which began from the southern stairway had been completed now, he said.

Of the 34 tasks only six were left to be completed and gilding of the pagoda and restoration of Shwe Htidaw, Seinphudaw and Hngetmyatnadaw had been started, he noted.

The previous hoisting of the Shwe Htidaw of the pagoda was 100 years ago, he recalled, adding major renovation was being carried out on the Shwe Htidaw after it was closely checked with advanced techniques with the participation of many experts.

With immense generosity, artistes had taken part in assisting in the task to hoist the Htidaw which was an opportunity a person could experience only once in his lifetime as hoisting of the Htidaw could be conducted only once in 100 years, he said

The pagoda is one of the most sublime religious edifices of all Buddhists as it was said that a staff, a robe, a water filter and the hair relics of the four Buddhas were enshrined in the pagoda, he stated.

The State and all Buddhist Myanmars honoured artistes for their assistance to the project, he said.

The play could be staged due to the guidance and assistance of Sayagyi U Thu Kha, he extolled, adding the play's earnings reached a record of over K 9 million thanks to artistic direction of Sayagyi U Thu Kha, efforts of artistes and encouragement of the people.

Also present were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Mayor of Yangon U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, patrons of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon and guests.

(3) Talks on weather changes

YANGON, 18 Nov - The Meteorology and Hydrology Department of the Ministry of Communications, Posts and Telegraphs held talks on weather changes this afternoon at the department.

Present were Minister for CPT Brig-Gen Win Tin, Managing Director of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications Col Maung Maung Tin, Director-General of Department of Posts and Telecommunications U Kyi Than, and experts and interested persons from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, National Commission for Environmental Affairs and the Ministry of Director-General of MHD U Htay Aung gave a speech.

Research Officer U Tun Lwin, Assistant Director U Soe Tint and Staff Officer Dr Tin Tun Myint gave talks.

More talks on the programme will help on 2 December 1998.

(4) Subcommittee for holding of 51st Anniversary independence Day Reception and Dinner meets

YANGON, 18 Nov - Committee for holding of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day Reception and Dinner held its coordination meeting at the Pyithu Hluttaw building this afternoon.

The meeting was attended by Chairman of Sub-committee Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win members and other officials.

Matters of invitation, accommodation, reception, entertainment, information and security were discussed at the meeting.

(5) Seikkyi Khanaungto Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 18 Nov - The Executive Committee members of Seikkyi Khanaungto Township National League for Democracy have tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD out of their own volition on 24 October 1998.

Seikkyi Khanaungto Township NLD was first formed on 18 October 1988 with seven EC members. Now all EC -members of the Township NLD resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wish to continue to take part in NLD's political activities. They notified the office of Seikkyi Khanaungto Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned on 24 October 1998.

(6) Minister for Transport inspects jetties along Yangon River

YANGON, 18 Nov - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe and Deputy Minister U Pe Than arrived at Chaungwa jetty this afternoon.

The minister was welcomed by Managing Director of Myanma Port Authority Col Thein Htay, Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint, Managing Director of Myanma Shipyards U Percy Maung Maung, Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line Col Khin Maung Kyi, Director of Marine Administration Department U Myo Thein, Director of Waterways Department U Tin Win and officials.

The minister and party inspected jetties, waterways, formations of sand bank and transport service of boats along Hlaing, Yangon and Bago Rivers from Chaungwa to Thanlyin Bridge by Soe Moe Aung" boat of IWT.

YANGON, 18 Nov - Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association requests literati, members of MWJA and guests to come in time for the ceremony to pay respects doyen literati that will be held at 8:30 am at Yangon City Hall on 21 November (Saturday) instead of 20 November as announced previously.

(8) CENTRAL BANK OF MYANMAR YANGON

PRESS RELEASE

The Central Bank of Myanmar will put into circulation a new denomination of One Thousand Kyats currency note with effect from November 25, 1998. The new currency note will be issued to the public at the Currency Department of the Central Bank of Myanmar, Banks and Government Treasuries during the banking hours.

All legal tender currency notes and coins will continue to be in circulation.

General description of the new currency note is as follows:

KYAT ONE THOUSAND NOTE

Dimension: 17.7 x 8 cm

Dominant Colour: Green

Obverse Side
On the top, the inscription "jrefrmEdkifiHawmfA[dkbPf" is printed. In the middle portion, the Note carries the depiction of a majestic King Lion in Myanmar artistic style and the Myanmar inscription"wpfaxmifusyf" mentioning the value of the Note. On the left hand side and at the bottom, floral designs in Myanmar artistic style are printed. On the three corners, the value of the Note is printed in numeral figures. Bank Note numbers are printed in Myanmar and English. On the left hand side, the Note bears the watermark image of the lion head. A security thread is embedded upright in the Note.

Reverse Side
On the top, the inscription "CENTRAL BANK OF MYANMAR" is printed. At the bottom, the inscription "ONE THOUSAND KYATS" is printed. In the middle, the Note bears the illustration of the building of the Central Bank of Myanmar with Myanmar traditional floral designs on the left side of the illustration. On the three corners, the value of the Note is printed in numeral figures.

(9) Minister meets Chinese delegation

YANGON, 18 Nov - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut met Chairman Mr Sun Xiaowen of China International Trust and Investment Corporation Technology Co Ltd of Beijing, People's Republic of China, who called at his office this afternoon.

They discussed friendly relations, mutual understanding and strengthening of economic cooperation between the two countries.

Also present at the call were Director-General U Zaw Win of Electric Power Department, Managing Director U Yan Naing of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise and officials.

(10) New product introduced to the market

YANGON, 18 Nov - The introduction marketing ceremony for Eva sanitary napkins of Myanmar Kare Products Ltd was held at Traders Hotel this morning.

Present on the occasion were Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe, Vice-Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe, Chairperson of Myanmar Women's Entrepreneurs Association Daw Sein Sein, Chairperson of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Daw May May Yi and members, Managing Director of Myanmar Care Products Ltd Mr Jacques Marcille and guests.

Mr Jacques Marcille spoke on the occasion.

Mr Jacques Marcille and officials presented donations toward funds of MNWCWA through member of MNWCWA Dr Khin Win Shwe, that for MMCWA (Central) through Chairperson Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and that for MWEA through Chairperson Daw Sein Sein.

Daw Mya Sabei Aye explained the advantages of Eva sanitary napkins with the aid of a slide show.

Lecturer Dr Nan Ohnma of Anatomy Department of Yangon Institute of Medicine-1 gave an observation about the napkins from medical point of view.

The guests then went out to Myanmar Care Factory in No 2 Hlinethaya Industrial Zone and had a look round.
