(1)   Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe inspects all-round renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda

YANGON, 8 Nov - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe inspected all round renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda this morning.

Arriving at the northern archway of the pagoda, accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Secretary-3 Lt-Gen Win Myint, the Senior General was welcomed by members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, the Ministers, Chairman of Leading Committee for Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Work Committee Deputy Commander of Yangon Command Col Hsan Hsint, heads of departments, officials and members of the Board of Trustees.

Senior General Than Shwe inspected renovated northern stairway. He proceeded to the platform of the pagoda and inspected maintenance of ancient religious structures.

The Senior General was briefed on work done on 28 renovation tasks, six main tasks being implemented and other nine tasks, arrangements for offering gold leaf to Shwedagon Pagoda and 68 encircling stupas, findings on maintenance of the Htidaw by Myanmar engineers and on arrangements for durability of the Htidaw which is over 120 years old by Patron of Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Chairman of the Work Committee Col Hsan Hsint reported on renovation work and findings on the Htidaw by technicians with the aid of a slide projector.

Next, the Secretary-1 and Myanmar engineers reported on findings on maintenance of the Htidaw and arrangements for durability of the Hitdaw with the use of modern equipment. The Senior General then gave instructions.

Next, the Senior General signed in the visitors book. He paid obeisance to Padamya Myatshin Buddha Image on the upper terrace.

The Senior General paid obeisance to Buddha images at renovated Gandhakutitaik. He also inspected Shwedagon Pagoda Museum, Pitakattaik and Mawguntaik, newly renovated elevator building and elevators.

(2)   200-apartment housing complex, food centre inaugurated on Bayintnaung Road

YANGON, 8 Nov - A ceremony to inaugurate the Shwe Marlar Yeikmon and Golden Flower Food Centre under the Shwe Marlar Housing Project Phase-II jointly undertaken by the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development of the Ministry of Construction and the Golden Flower Construction took place at the pandal of the Shwe Marlar Yeikmon on Bayintnaung Road in Ward 4, Kamayut Township, this morning. Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and accepted donations for the National Health Committee.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Ministers at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe, the deputy ministers, Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe and Vice-Chairperson Dr Khin Win Shwe, senior military officers, heads of department, the managing director and personnel of the Golden Flower Construction, the band of the No 1 Basic Education High School, Kamayut, members of the Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, teachers and guests.

(3)   Secretary-1 meets artistes of ''History of Shwedagon Pagoda'' play

YANGON, 8 Nov - Patron of the Leading Committee for perpetual All-round Renovation of Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt cordially met with the actors and the actresses performing the play "History of Shwedagon Pagoda", directed by Maung Hnin Moe and supervised by Director and Writer U Thu Kha, at the National Theatre on Myoma Kyaung Road today.

The fund-raiser play was sponsored by the Leading Committee for Perpetual All-round Renovation of the Shwedagon Pagoda and Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon.

Accompanied by officials of the State Peace and Development Council, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at the National Theatre at 6.30 pm.

He was welcomed there by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Chairman of the Leading Committee Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Brig-Gen Thura Myint Maung, Chairman of Myanmar Motion Picture Asiayon U Sein Tin and EC members.

After cordially meeting with the actors and the actress, the Secretary-1 left the theatre.

The play is presented beginning 7 pm every evening UD to 12 November.

YANGON, 8 Nov - Families of the Defence Services (Army, Navy and Air) and well-wishers donated dry rations and alms to Tawtaik Dhamma Yeiktha at Tawtaik Village in Shwepyitha Township this afternoon, attend by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

It was attended by members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear Admiral Nyunt Thein, Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Vice-Adjutant General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Commander of Ayeyawady Naval Region Command Headquarters Commodore Khin Aung, Director of Signals Col Aung Myint, Deputy Minister for Forestry Col Thaik Tun, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council and departmental officials, officials of Yangon North District and well-wishers, nuns and members of religious associations from Shwepyitha Township.

Tawtaik Dhamma Yeiktha Padana Nayaka and members of State Sangha Working Committee Theravada Buddhists Missionary Ovadacariya Maha Kammathanacariya Agga Maha Kammathanacariya Bhaddanta Dhammasara administered the Eight Precepts.

(5)   Antiques and cultural objects donated to Ministry of Culture

YANGON, 8 Nov - Chairman of Cultural Heritage Preservation Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt handed over antiques and cultural objects to the Ministry of Culture at the National Museum on Pyay Road this afternoon.

Also present on the occasion were Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads of department, officials and guests.

(6)   Sittway Township NLD dissolved

YANGON, 8 Nov - The Executive Committee members and all members of Sittway Township National League for Democracy tendered their resignations and dissolved the Township NLD on 27 October 1998.

Sittway Township NLD was formed on 12 November 1988 with 19 EC members but the number was reduced considerably due to death, resignations and other reasons. The Executive Committee was reconstituted again with 28 members on 30 July 1989, with 31 members on 26 August and with 10 members on 13 November the same year. Two of the ten EC members then shifted to other townships leaving eight. Those eight members then resigned from the party membership out of their own volition since they no longer wished to continue to take part in NLD's activities. They notified the office of Sittway Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission and the chairman of the party concerned. On 27 October evening, personnel of the Township NLD disbanded it by handing the signboard, seals and documents over to the Township Multiparty Democracy General Election Commission according to law.

(7)   Visitors crowd Cooperative Trade Fair

YANGON, 8 Nov - Cooperative Trade Fair (Yangon) jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Cooperatives and Asia Plaza continued at Asia Plaza building for the seventh day today.

The shops of ministries, State and Division cooperatives societies and private companies on ground floor, first and second floors were crowded with visitors and shoppers.

The fair opens from 9 am to 9 pm and continues till 11 November Admission is free.

(8)   Women's soccer semifinal, final matches live on TV & Radio

YANGON, 8 Nov - TV Myanmar and Radio Myanmar will telecast and broad cast live semifinal and final matches of third Inter-State/Division Women's Soccer Championship for 1998 at 2 pm on 9 (Monday) and 11 (Wednesday) November respectively.

(9)   Pilgrims leave for India

YANGON, 8 Nov - Members of Bodh Gaya pilgrimage No 5/98 left here for Calcutta this morning under the arrangement of the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The pilgrims were seen off at the airport by Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Director-General of Religious Affairs Department U Arnt Maung, Director-General of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Sann Lwin and officials.

Chairman of Myanmar Bodh Gaya Missionary Association U Kyaw Khin Myint presented a religious flag to leader Daw San San May.

The pilgrims will offer 9,000 lights, water, 'soon' and incense at Bodh Gaya.
