Permission was first granted to permit border trade and commerce in Tachilek, he said, adding economy of the town has developed.

He pointed out that border trade business at Tachilek was in the forefront at first.

But, he said, progress in its border trade was losing steam if it was compared with business in Muse, Kawthoung, Bhamo (Lweje) and so on. General Maung Aye spoke of the need to gain momentum. He urged the responsible personnel to see that work was done correctly and properly.

He said although some nations in the world including neighbours were experiencing financial constraints and economic difficulties, Myanmar was least affected. This, he said, was due to the correctness of the political, economic and social objectives being implemented in the country.

He said Myanmar is rich in natural resources. He said peaceful, modern and developed nation would be realised if all worked hard in accordance with the objectives laid down.

He said that at a time when efforts were being made to boost commodity production, priority was being given to advancement of the agriculture sector which had firm foundation. He explained that work was under way to expand by 20 per cent in the agriculture sector.

He said paddy, the main crop, and others were being grown on all available land after reclaiming vacant and virgin land. The crops thus produced would be exported only after achieving self-sufficiency, he said. He noted that markets for the agricultural produce had already been secured.

General Maung Aye reminded them to minimize loss and wastage in money and materials while trying to boost production.

He spoke of the need to expand the arable land in Shan State which is rich in land and water resources.
