(1) Senior General Than Shwe previews Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit

YANGON, 30 Oct - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe viewed displays and exhibits of Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this afternoon.

Senior General Than Shwe accompanied by Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Patron of the Committee for Organizing the Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo and Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint arrived at Tatmadaw Convention Hall at 3.45 pm.

They were welcomed by members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Rear-Admiral Nyunt Thein, Commander-in-Chief (Air) Maj-Gen Kyaw Than and Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt Gen Tin Tun, Chairman of Leading Organizing Committee of the Exhibition to Revitalize and Foster Patriotic Spirit Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, ministers, deputy ministers, vice-mayor, members of the Leading Organizing Committee and sub-committees of the Exhibition.

Then, Senior General; Than Shwe viewed the displays of the exhibition for one hour.

The Senior General then gave instructions to officials and left there at 4.45pm.

(2) Masses of Bago Division call for deportation of Suu Kyi and giving punishment to nld group and axe-handles disrupting peace and tranquillity of the nation

YANGON, 30 Oct - Over 16,000 people from various strata of life from Bago Division expressed their genuine desire at a mass meeting held at Division Sports Ground in Bago this morning.

Present were members of Red Cross Society and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Mon Traditional Cultural Troupe, Bago Division Working Committee for Women ' s Affairs, Bago Division Union Solidarity and Development Association, Bago Division Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Bago Division Women Sports Association, All Bus Lines Control Committee, Video and Audio Recording Association, Saw Mill Entrepreneurs Association, Rice Mill Entrepreneurs Association, Merchants Association, Rice Dealers Association, Industrial Entrepreneurs Association, Nurses Association, Hotel Entrepreneurs Association, Slow Moving Vehicles Association, Trawler Owners Association, Writers and Journalists Association, Thabin Asiayon, War Veterans Organization, Printing Entrepreneurs Association, town elders, Cooperative Societies, Freight Handling Committee, Shopkeepers and farmers and people of Waw, DaikU, Kyauktaga, Thanatpin, Nyaunglaybin, Kawa and Shwekyin Townships.

The meeting unanimously passed two motions calling for safeguarding and maintaining economic development and ensuring food, clothing and shelter needs of the people and maintaining and safeguarding the stability of the State which has already been achieved.

Rice mill entrepreneur U Khun Ba Thaung of DaikU Township chaired it with Chairman of Rice Mill Entrepreneurs Association U Hla Ohn of Nyaunglaybin Township, Printing Entrepreneur U Chit Thein of Kawa Township, Rice Mill Entrepreneur U Shwe Phu of Bago Township and Chairman of Video and Audio Recording Association U Ni Myint of Shwekyin Township as members of the Panel of Chairmen.  Member of Thanatpin Township Working Committee for Women' s Affairs Daw Aye Thin Khaing was emcee and member of Waw Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association Daw Phyu Phyu Oo joint emcee.

(3) Central Committee for Observance of 51st Anniversary Independence Day meets

YANGON, 30 Oct - The Central Committee for Observance of the 51st Anniversary Independence Day 1999 held its meeting at the Pyithu Hluttaw building here this afternoon with an address by Chairman of the Central Committee Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were Vice-Chairman of the Central Committee Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, member of the State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Lt-Gen Min Thein, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung Minister for Education U Than Aung, Ministers at the Prime Minister's Office Brig-Gen Lun Maung and U Than Shwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, members of the Central Committee, chairmen of the subcommittees and officials.

Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said the 51st Anniversary Independence Day is to be observed in accord with the four national objectives for all national peoples to safeguard for perpetuation of independence and sovereignty, for non-disintegration of, the Union and for non-disintegration of national solidarity; for all national people to strive with oneness of mind for building a modern, developed nation; for all national people to strive in harmony and unison for emergence of an enduring State Constitution; and, for all national peoples to strive for revitalization of patriotic spirit and safeguarding of national character.

The 51st Anniversary Independence Day Ceremony, he said, is to be organized systematically in accord with the traditions as in the previous ceremonies after formation of necessary committees and subcommittees.

He also spoke of holding of the Independence Day commemorative talks and contests all over the country and the prize-distribution ceremony for the national level contests at the Independence Day dinner.

He also gave suggestions on holding of the flag-hoisting ceremonies in states and divisions and district towns, sports contests and festivities.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo called for cooperation of the departments concerned to successfully hold the ceremonies.

(4) Attitude of political parties

Twenty national race groups which made peace with the government have already issued declarations on their altitude in connection with the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Hluttaw.

Similarly, political parties legally in existence are issuing declarations on their respective altitudes in connection with the call of the National League for Democracy to convene the Hluttaw and they will be made public.

Today, a translation of the declaration on the altitude of Union Pa-Oh National Organization released on 27-10-98 is as follows:

1. Union Pa-Oh National Organization started to carry out organizational tasks after laying down national political policy based on perpetuation of the nation and national unity.

2. Union Pa-Oh National Organization was represented by the delegates in the political parties group and the representatives-elect group in the National Convention which is being attended by the delegates of all strata of people.

3. The National Convention is laying down the fundamental principles needed for a new State Constitution and efforts are being made for emergence of discipline-flourishing democracy for future.

4. While the Union of Myanmar is today achieving favorable political, economic and social conditions all-round, Union Pa-Oh National Organization never supports any destructive group wanting to disrupt peace and stability of the State.

5. Hence, it is hereby declared that we do not support the National League for Democracy (NLD) and that party's 10-member Hluttaw representative committee in their attempting to mar peaceful and tranquil situation of the State.

(5) Secretary-l receives Commerce Secretary of India

YANGON, 30 Oct - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Commerce Secretary Mr PP Prabhu and party of the Ministry of Commerce of the Republic of India at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 1 pm today.

Also present at the call were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win, Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

The Indian commerce delegation was accompanied by Ambassador of the Republic of India Mr Shyam Saran.

(6) New annex Myanmar Deawoo International Ltd's garment factory opens

YANGON, 30 Oct - A ceremony to open a new annexe to the garment factory of Myanmar Daewoo International Ltd, jointly established by the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd and Daewoo Corporation of the Republic of Korea, was held- at the garment factory in Pyinmabin Industrial Region, Mingaladon Township, this morning, attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo.

Also present were members of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-chief (Navy) Rear Admiral Nyunt Thein and Commander-in-chief (Air) Gen Kyaw Than, Deputy Prime Minister Lt-Gen Tin Tun, ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, Chairman of the Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd Maj-Gen Than Oo, Managing Director Brig-Gen Win Hlaing and members of the board of directors, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, deputy ministers, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea Mr Kyong Bo Choi, President of Daewoo Corporation Mr BJ Chang, officials of Myanmar Daewoo International Ltd and guests.

Managing Director of Myanmar Daewoo International Ltd Mr MS Chang explained matters related to the garment factory.

Maj-Gen Than Oo said Myanmar Daewoo International Ltd was established on 23 January 1991, and the factory began to operate on 25 September of that year.

He said the factory produces and exports shirts, blouses and pajamas, and as they suit the tastes of countries which import, demand is on the increase, and added that is why the new annex is built with a view to boosting production.

Previously, 490,000 dozens of garments can be produced annually, and after extending the new annex, 600,000 dozens of garments can be produced and exported, he remarked.

Mr BJ Chang said at a time when the market-oriented economic system was introduced, Daewoo Corporation started business in Myanmar with nine joint ventures and 8,000 Myanmar employees.

Myanmar Daewoo International Ltd began with 700 employees, and as the business has become successful, the number of employees has increased, which exceeds 2,700, he said and added 24,000 items of clothing per day can be produced.

Then, he thanked officials.  The managing director of Myanmar Daewoo International Ltd presented prizes to those who outstandingly carried out the works of the factory.

Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Mr Kyong Bo Choi, Chairman of Daewoo (Myanmar) Ltd Mr GY Um and Mr MS Chang formally opened the annex.

The Secretary-2 and party inspected the factory, and planted commemorative trees.

(7) Minister meets GM of Tirtamas Comexindo

YANGON, 30 Oct - Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe met General Manager Mr SG Subramanian and party of PT Tirtamas Comexindo Co. of Indonesia who called at his office at 1 pm today.

Present were Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and officials of the ministry.

(8) Yangon Division will put 50,000 acres under beans & pulses 1 50,000 acres under sunflower

YANGON, 30 Oct - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, accompanied by Managing Director U Tun Than of Myanma Agricultural Services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Commander of No 2 Military Region Lt-Col Than Win, Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein and divisional officials, attended monsoon paddy harvesting, threshing and selling ceremony at Kyauktan Township and formally opened the billboard on Thanlyinkyun Region Edible Oil Sufficiency Zone today.

The commander and party were welcomed at Nyaungwaing Village in Kyauktan Township at 9 am by district and township level officials, farmers and members of Union Solidarity and Development Association.

They oversaw collective paddy threshing work at farmer U Nyunt Shwe's paddy field and fulfilled requirements of farmers at the purchasing depot of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading.

The commander and party attended the opening ceremony of the billboard on Thanlyinkyun Region Edible Oil Sufficiency Zone at the corner of Strand Road and Min Road near Kyauktan Jetty.

Present were member of USDA, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades band troupe and people totaling over 1,000. Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than formally unveiled the billboard and delivered an address.

(9) Minister meets Chairman of Daewoo Corporation

YANGON, 30 Oct - Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's office meet Chairman of Daewoo Corporation Mr Byang Ju Chang and party who called at his office at 2 pm today.

They discussed investment work being carried out and work to be done in Myanmar.

Present at the call were officials of National AFTA Unit.

(10) Minister meets Ambassador

YANGON, 30 Oct - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin met Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai who called at his office at 10.30am today.

Present at the call were Managing Director Maung Maung Tin of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications, Project Manager U Ye Win and officials.

(11) Myanmar, India sign bilateral trade agreement

YANGON, 30 Oct - A ceremony to sign an agreement on bilateral trade between Myanmar and India was held at the Ministry of Commerce yesterday evening.

Myanmar group led by Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint and Indian commercial delegation led by Commerce Secretary Mr PP Prabhu of India
signed the agreement.

Also present al the occasion were Ambassador of India Mr Shyam Saran, Managing Director U Saw Aung of Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading, Deputy Director General U Nyunt Aye of Directorate of Trade, Deputy Director General U Thein Lwin of Border Trade Department, General Manager U Tin Win of Myanma Economic Back and officials.
