(1) Masses in Shan State (North) denounce destructive acts that harm peace, stability and progress Elements inside and outside the country making synchronised efforts to create unrest Over 23,000 representatives of the people pledge to safeguard stability and economic development

YANGON, 13 Oct - Over 23,000 people from various strata c life in northern Shan State expressed their genuine desire at a mass meeting held in Lashio Township Sports Ground this morning.

The meeting also tabled and seconded two motions calling for safeguarding and maintaining already achieved economic development and ensuring food, clothing and shelter needs of the people and maintaining and safeguarding the already achieved stability of the State.

Present were members of Shan, Danu, Kholon Lishaw, Myaungzi, Palaung Kachin, Wa and Kokang traditional cultural troupes, members of r northern Shan State Union Solidarity and Development Association, members of northern Shan State Working Committee for Women's Affairs and Maternal and Child Welfare Association, trainees of the Nurse Training School of Lashio, teachers and trainees and members of the Panel of Chairmen.

(2) Systematic schemes required to ensure convenience for cross-border tourism
Tourism Development Management Committee holds meeting

YANGON, 13 Oct - Tourism Development Management Committee held Meeting 2/98 at Karaweik Hall here this afternoon. It was addressed by Chairman of TDMC Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Khin Nyunt.

The Secretary-1 said the year 1996 was designated as Visit Myanmar Year, with a grand opening ceremony, in attracting tourists to visit Myanmar in large numbers.

He expressed hope that foreign investors and national entrepreneurs will gain benefits and the national economy will be developed as much as success is achieved as expected, adding the respective ministries, with H&T Ministry as the centre force, should collectively strive to realize the aims.

The Secretary-1 and party inspected reports describing tourism enterprises efforts to development the industry.

(3) Information Technology Forum held

YANGON, 13 Oct - Information Technology Forum jointly sponsored by XYBASE Technologies (Malaysia) and Mastech Co Ltd (Myanmar) was held at Traders Hotel on Sule Pagoda Road this morning, with an address by Chairman of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present were Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Chairman of Yangon City Development Council Mayor U Ko Lay the deputy ministers, members of Myanmar Computer Science Development Council, diplomats, officials of the office of the State Peace and Development Council, departmental heads, rectors, members of Myanmar Computer Entrepreneurs Association, members of Myanmar Computer Technicians Association, officials of XYBASE Technologies (Malaysia) and Mastech Co Ltd (Myanmar) and guests.

(4) Secretary-2 supervises work for regional development, reclamation of wetlands in Yangon North District and East District

YANGON, 13 Oct - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected regional development work and reclamation of fallow and wetlands in Hlegu Township of Yangon North District and Dagon Myothit (North) of Yangon East District today.

Accompanied by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Deputy Minister for Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Construction U Tint Swe, Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries U Aung Thein, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and departmental officials, the Secretary-2 arrived at the briefing hall of wetland reclamation near wetland No (503-A), (504A) and (506-B) of Yetalabaung Village-tract, Hlegu Township.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by Division Commander of No 11 LID Col Myint Swe, Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and departmental officials, township and ward authorities and farmers of village tracts.

(5) Minister meets officials of Asian, Norway Blind Unions

YANGON, 13 Oct - Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone received Chairman of Asian Blind Union Mr Kua Chen Hock, Secretary-General Mr Ivan Ho Tuck Choy and Secretary-General of Norwegian Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted Mr Arne Johan Husveg at his office at 1 pm today.

Present were Director-General Col Sit Myaing of Social Welfare Department, Deputy Director-General U Aung Soe of Fire Services Department, Director-General U Saw Thein of Relief and Resettlement Department and Head of Office U Maung Pi.

(6) Minister meets Chairmen of Standard Telecom Myanmar Mayflower Bank

YANGON, 13 Oct - Minister for Communications, Posts and Telegraphs Brig-Gen Win Tin received Chairman of Standard Telecom Inc Mr John Sudarma and Chairman of Myanmar Mayflower Bank U Kyaw Win at his office at 10 am today.

They discussed prospects for extension of communications works.

Present were Managing Director Col Maung Maung Tin and Project Manager U
Ye Win and officials of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications.

(7) YCDC meets Sarawak FC on 24 Oct

YANGON, 13 Oct - Yangon City Development Committee soccer team will meet Sarawak FC of Malaysia in the second round match of the Ninth Asian 1998 at Youth Training Centre in Thuwunna on 24 October evening.

Tickets will be sold from noon to 4 pm beginning 21 October.

(8) Agriculture graduates arrive back from Israel

YANGON, 13 Oct - The Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions continued for the thirteenth day at designated venues today.

The contestants participated in the song contest at the National Museum on Pyay Road in Dagon Township, dancing contest and marionette contest at the National Theatre on Myomakyaung Street in Dagon Township.

Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, members of Panel of Patrons of the Organizing Leading Committee for Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competitions Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung, Than and Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Vice-Chairman of Organizing Leading Committee Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and officials attended the competitions.

(9) All preparations under way for purchase, storage and milling of paddy

YANGON, 13 Oct - A coordination meeting on rice, paddy and beans and pulses trading for 1998-99 was held at the Myanma Agricultural Produce Trading on Pansodan Street this morning and Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than delivered an address.

It was also attended by Deputy Minister Commodore Myo Tint, Managing Director of MAPT U Saw Aung and officials.

Minister Maj-Gen Kyaw Than said the central level dignitaries and responsible personnel at the grassroots levels have been engaged in paddy purchase for 1998-99 since cultivation of paddy. At the same time, he said, efforts are being made for boosting paddy yield. He said that paddy purchase this year would be carried out after signing paddy purchase agreements in advance. Reasonable price has been prescribed and up to 12 October, contracts for purchase of 96.586 million baskets of paddy have already been signed.

The minister called for maintaining good relations in direct contacts with farmers individually.

He said instructions had been given to get rice mills throughout the country to be ready for the paddy season this year. Rice mills are to run full capacity depending on the amount of paddy purchased, he said, adding private mills are to assist when State-owned mills could not do the job by themselves.

He also called for efforts to produce 1,440 tons of bran oil at the bran oil mills.

Surplus broken rice and bran will be exported to earn foreign exchange, he said.

The minister pointed out that new crop of paddy will be milled properly beginning November and December and distributed to the respective regions. Paddy surplus States and Divisions would have to send rice to the paddy deficient States and Divisions up to January according to the requirements.

 He spoke of the need to take measures since the time of paddy purchase, to store quality paddy and to mill it systematically for exporting high quality paddy.

(10) Minister for Industry-l receives MD of Wincal Pharmaceutical

YANGON, 13 Oct - Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung received Managing Director Mr Wong Sue Hung, Jimmy and party of Wincal Pharmaceutical Co Ltd of the People's Republic of China at his office at 1 pm today.

Also present were Deputy Minister Col Than Zin, Director-General U Win Zaw Nyunt of Directorate of Industries, Director-General U Tin Hlaing of Regional Industrial Coordination and Industrial Inspection Department and Managing Director Col Myint Oo of Myanma Pharmaceutical Industries.
