(6) Attitude of the nationalities peace groups

There have been reports that the majority of the public is worried about the danger of deteriorating peace and of regional stability and peace being undermined after spreading of news that the four groups which had made peace with the government supported the National League for Democracy's call for convening of the Hluttaw. Hence, declarations of the peace groups will be made public to be able to vividly learn the situation between the peace groups and National League for Democracy and the true attitude of the peace groups.

Today, a translation of the declaration of the group led by U Saw Tha Mu He, who separated from KNU and exchanged arms for peace, of Haungthayaw Special Region, Kyainseikkyi, Kayin State, is stated as follows:

Declaration on attitude of Kayin peace group of Haungthayaw Special Region in connection with acts of National League for Democracy
Date: 20 September 1998

Subject: Attitude of Kayin peace group (Haungthayaw Special Region) in connection with acts of the National League for Democracy

1. Despite the successive governments' endeavours to reconsolidate national unity through various ways, as national unity had disintegrated for years and the national brethren resorted to armed struggle that resulted with awful consequences to the State and national peoples, success was not achieved. National unity could be rebuilt only in the time of the Tatmadaw government and peace maintained. But it was not made so easily. It was the rare peace achieved through various difficulties. Due to the peace thus restored, it is evident that the border regions have now witnessed social and economic progress and uplift of social standard.

2. We learn that NLD is organizing to convene a Hluttaw, that the party's acts are purported to undermine peace and stability and disintegrate the Union and that the party's declarations and perpetrations might cause suspicion between nationalities group and the Tatmadaw government and disrupt peace. As the party's activities may cause a great danger to the nation, our organization never ever supports that party's acts.

3. We believe that the Tatmadaw government is making on-going steps for practicing discipline-flourishing democracy after consolidating national unity. Besides, as we believe that the Tatmadaw government is marching on the correct path for the nation, our organization announces that we will work in cooperation with the Tatmadaw government.

(9) Anthropoid primate fossilized remains unearthed in Pondaung region of Myanmar are the oldest and the most ancient among those discovered in Asia

YANGON, 2 Oct - La French paper Le Figaro carried on 18 September an elaborate report on research findings of French paleontologists, who after minutely examining fossilized remains of various animals including primate fossilized remains discovered from Pondaung region of the central Myanmar, came to a conclusion that they are 40 million years old, and seven million years older than primate fossilized remains discovered in Egypt.

A four-member French paleontologist team led by Paleontologist Professor Jean-Jacques Jaeger of Montpellier University, Montpellier, France, in cooperation with the fossilized remains exploration team of Pondaung region led by Department Head Col Than Tun of the Office of Strategic Studies of the Ministry of Defence and Professor Dr Tin Thein of Geology Department of Pathein University, carried out detailed examinations and research on primate fossilized remains discovered near Mogaung Village of Pale Township in 1978 and fossilized remains of various animals including primate fossilized remains unearthed near Mogaung Village of Pale Township and Bahin Village of Myaing Township in 1997.

The combined team-also carried out fossilized remains exploration and Paleo Magamatic measuring in Pale and Myaing Townships. The French paleontologists contributed to Le Figaro an elaborate report on research findings of the French team and Myanmar team with regard to fossilized remains discovered in Pondaung region according to Paleo Magamatic measuring.

The heading of the report appeared in that daily ran "The hypothesis of African origin is questioned" and "Should the genealogical tree of man be planted in Asia?" The hypothesis of the African origin of anthropoids has been well-established for a long time. However, a fossilized jaw of a primate stimulated suspicion about the truth of that hypothesis.

The Government of Myanmar organized fossilized remains exploration in Pondaung region beginning last year, and invited French paleontologist to carry out research on fossilized remains discovered in Pondaung region.

As a result, fossilized remains of a primate could be estimated to be about 40 million ages old. This finding contradicted the former theory of the African origin of anthropoids. Its supposed ancestors of Fayoum region of Egypt is 33 million years old.

Therefore, the primate fossilized remains discovered in Pondaung region of Myanmar are seven million years older than the fossilized remains unearthed in Fayoum.

It is supposed that the former hypothesis on the fact that the primates from African gradually migrated to Asia, can be replaced with the one on the fact that only primates from Asia migrated to Africa.

Forty million years ago, Asia and Africa were separated by the Tethys ocean. The variations of the sea-level between 36 and 45 million ages caused the emergence of bits of land, which by degree formed the junctions.

Therefore, the fossilized remains of the ancestors of the rhinoceros, the hippopotamus and the anthracotheres, which were contemporary to the anthropoids discovered in Fayoum of Egypt, Thailand and Myanmar, have similarities.

It is also reported that the whole Arabian peninsular must be excavated with a view to finding the famous missing link as this region, which was existing between two continents, probably hide numerous fossils. Interesting finds will be achieved by carrying out fossilized remains exploration in Asia, and as a result, the hypothesis on the Asian origin of anthropoids will be able to be accepted.

At present, Anthropoid primate fossilized remains unearthed in Pondaung region of Myanmar are the oldest and the most ancient among those discovered in Asia.

The fossilized remains exploration team of Pondaung region and French paleontologists will continue to cooperate in exploring fossilized remains in Pondaung region and carrying out research.

The findings will be presented in newspapers, journals and science periodicals, it is learnt.
