(1) Billboard hailing Annual General Meeting of USDA unveiled
YANGON, 2 Sept - A ceremony to unveil the billboard hailing the 1998 Annual General Meeting of Union Solidarity and Development Association (Central) was held at the corner of Sule Pagoda Road and Bogyoke Aung San Street, Pabedan Township, this morning.
Present were Chairman of Agitative Group of Information Sub-Committee Managing Director of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise Col Bo Kyi, Secretary Pro-Rector of University of Culture U Thant Zin, Secretary of Yangon Division USDA U Aye Myint and executives, secretaries, executives and members of Yangon West District, Pabedan, Latha, Lanmadaw and Kyauktada Township USDAs, teachers and students, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade members, Maternal and Child Welfare Association members, nursing trainees and ozi and dobat troupes of Fine Arts Department totalling over 1,500.
Patrons of Pabedan, Latha and Lanmadaw Township USDAs who are chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils unveiled the billboard.

(2) Tatmadawmen trainees urged to disseminate advanced cultivation techniques to farmers
YANGON, 2 Sept - Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin delivered an address at the opening of the Tatmadaw Agriculture Course No 34 jointly conducted by the Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation at the Central Paddy Cultivation Model Farm in Hmawby this morning. Present on the occasion were senior officers of the Ministry of Defence and responsible personnel of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation and Tatmadawmen trainees.
In his address, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin said the State Peace and Development Council has been implementing political, economic and social objectives for the emergence of a peaceful, modern and developed nation. He noted that all-out efforts are being made in accordance with the economic objective calling for development of agriculture as the base and all-round development of other sectors of the economy as well.
The minister said the fiscal year 1998-99 is the third year of the Second Short-term Five-Year Plan being implemented. He spoke of the need to meet the production targets in the agriculture sector for the success of the Second Short-term Five-Year Plan. The government, he said, is providing all the necessary assistance for the agriculture sector, which is the basic economic sector of the State and is also vital for food sufficiency, supplying raw materials to the factories, earning foreign exchange and improving the socio-economic standard of farmers. He called on the Tatmadawmen to play a role in agricultural sector development since this will contribute much towards progress of the nation.
The minister pointed out that the Tatmadaw Agriculture Course is being conducted with the objectives, namely, development of agricultural work being undertaken by the Tatmadaw battalions and units; dissemination of ever advancing agricultural production techniques to different regions; and join hands with the public to participate in agricultural production development tasks. He urged the trainees to try to realize the objectives of the course.
The minister under-scored that farmers should realize and accept the advanced cultivation techniques instead of sticking to the traditional methods in their efforts to boost production. He called on the Tatmadawmen trainees to learn advanced cultivation techniques theoretically and practically and then relay their knowledge and experience to the public.
The 14-week course is being attended by 120 Tatmadawmen.
Afterwards, a ceremony to hand over a rice mill for milling export quality rice under technological cooperation programme between the Myanmar Government and Singapore Government was held. First, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin and Ambassador of Singapore Mr Patrick Choy Choong Tow discussed matters related to the agriculture sector. They viewed quality paddy and rice on display in the hall.
Next, the minister and the ambassador commissioned the rice mill. They later toured the mill and inspected the milling process.
They also inspected packaging of export quality rice species such as Paw Hsan Hmwe, Natha Hmwe and Lonthwe Hmwe.
The minister presented fruits and small bags of rice produced by the mill to the ambassador.

(3) TV play to hail USDA General Meeting
YANGON, 2 Sept - Hailing 1998 General Meeting of Union Solidarity and Development Association, movie director Zinyaw Maung Maung is taping the TV play "Moeyantho Lwintpyanzaymyi Kaythayazadohei Arman".
After acting in some scenes of the TV play in Bagan-NyaungU, Shwebo, Sagaing, PyinOoLwin and Mandalay, some artistes including Ye Wai Yan, Yadana Khin, Modi, Moss and Chit Saya arrived back here by Tatmadaw flight from Mandalay this morning.

(4) Deputy Prime Minister receives Ambassador of Korea
YANGON, 2 Sept - Myanma Timber Enterprise and Myeik Plywood Co Ltd signed an agreement on hard plywood and wood-based industries at the hall of MTE this afternoon.
Present were Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Soe Myint, heads of department and officials of Myeik Plywood Co Ltd.
Managing Director of MTE U Shwe Baw and Managing Director of Myeik Plywood Co Ltd-U Than Sein signed the agreement and exchanged the documents. Minister U Aung Phone handed the permit of Myanmar Investment Commission to U Than Sein.
The company will build a hard plywood and wood based factory in industrial zone in Myeik with cent-per-cent investment and the factory will produce plywood and wood-based finished products for local and foreign markets.

(5) The foreign reporters deported for entering country with false documents, illegally gathering news
YANGON, 2 Sept - Three foreign correspondents, one Canadian, one Japanese and one Australian, holding tourist visas were deponed from the Yangon International Airport on 1 September for entering the country with false documents and illegally gathering news.
Of the three, Mr Douglas J Earl, the Canadian, is a reporter for the Thaya Thai Advertising. He arrived Myanmar by TG-303 flight on 19 August 1990 holding Canadian passport No BC015260 posing as a company staff. Mr Munesuke Yamamoto, the Japanese, is a correspondent of the Pacific Press Service. He arrived in Myanmar by TG-305 flight on 6 August 1998 holding a Japanese passport No TE-7369815 posing as a designer. Ms Sophie Louise Barrm, the Australian, is a freelance reporter. She arrived in Myanmar by TG-303 flight on 14 August 1998 holding an Australian passport No E-7026187 posing as a teacher.
The three foreigners with ulterior motives carried documents with false statements on occupation and personal data. After entering the country they contacted the National League for Democracy and illegally gathered news. The authorities seized from them documents, cassette tapes, films and video tapes on internal political affairs of Myanmar as evidence. In addition to gathering news, they were found to have acted secretly as liaison between the National League for Democracy and organizations outside the country.
The authorities deported them from Yangon International Airport on TG-306 flight yesterday evening after they had been found to have lied regarding their occupations despite their being foreign reporters and illegally gathered news.

(6) USDA is leading and promoting youths
YANGON, 2 Sept - Spoken English Course on International Relations sponsored by Monywa District Union Solidarity and Development Association of Sagaing Division concluded yesterday in Shwepyi Ngwepyi Hall in Monywa Township.
Patron of Division USDA Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Win and USDA Secretariat Minister for Culture U Win Sein presented certificates to trainees who have completed the course.
U Win Sein said courses are being conducted to uplift the ability of USDA members in helping to transform the association to become a qualified and strong force, effectively striving for the benefit of the nation, the people and the association itself, he noted.
The courses promote youths' skills, enabling them to keep abreast of international conditions, he added.
Training is required to gain competent leadership ability, he said, adding knowledge gained from the course should be combined with practical experiences to differentiate between right and wrong and good and bad.
They will become successful and capable leaders only after their newly- gained knowledge has been tested in practical life, he said, urging USDA members to fully understand the aims of the association which is leading and nurturing youths.
English which is the main language in international relations is taught to USDA members to be able to keep abreast of the world, he noted. Chairman of Monywa District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Thein Nyunt presented gifts to the rector of Monywa University, professor of English Department and instructors.
People of Sitpin village tract presented 1,215 USDA applications to Secretary of District USDA U Tin Win Myint through villager organizer U Tin Maung U in hailing the association's Annual General Meeting. Entrepreneurs, merchants and organizations in Monywa donated K 135,000 to the association.
Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Soe Myint, Tactical Operation Commander Col Hla Ngwe, commanders, officials, executive of Sagaing Division USDA U Kyaw Min, District USDA members and guests were also present.

(7) Drafting of Five-Year Plan for development of industrial zones coordinated
YANGON, 2 Sept - A preliminary coordination meeting to draft the Five-Year Plan for development of industrial zones in Myanmar was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Science and Technology this afternoon.
Present were Chairman of Myanma Industrial Development Work Committee Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Joint Secretary of Myanma Industrial Development Committee, Deputy Minister U Thein Tun and departmental officials.
Those present took part in the discussions.

(8) Myanmar archery team leaves for Singapore
YANGON, 2 Sept - A Myanmar archery team of Myanmar Archery Federation left here by air this morning to take part in the 1998 World Ranking Asian Archery Circuit Second Round Competition in Singapore from 3 to 7 September.
The archery team includes team leader Dr Myat Thura Soe, coaches Mr Youn Byung Sun and U Khin Maung Htwe, archers Khin Zaw, Nyi Nyi Tun; Tha Tun Kyaw, Win Maung Maung Oo, Khin Than Nwe, Thi Thi Win, Myat Thuza Myint and Moe Thazin Myint.
They were seen off at Yangon International Airport by President of Myanmar Archery Federation U Khin Shwe, Secretary U Tin Aung, executives and relatives.

(9) Livestock and Fisheries Ministry staff urged to exceed targets
YANGON, 2 Sept - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein urged staff to strive with added momentum to exceed the set targets of the respective sectors in Mandalay Division on 30 August.
In his meeting with employees of Livestock, Feedstuff and Dairy Products Enterprise, Patheingyi Farm and Division Livestock and Veterinary Department Office, he also called for participation with patriotism in building a modem nation, always placing in the fore Our Three Main National Causes and the 12 objectives laid down by the government.
They should be aware of fabrications floated by axe-handles who are relying on alien forces and are jealous of seeing national developments, he said, urging them to deter these misconducts.
Accompanied by officials, the minister inspected PyinOoLwin Township LVD Office, LFDPE, Shan State Farm in Lashio Township, other farms under the ministry, regional battalions and North-East Command on 28 and 29 August.
On 30 August morning, he inspected process of work at a beekeeping farm in Lashio and a private poultry farm in PyinOoLwin.
In the evening, he visited a fish firm in Mandalay Division.
The next day, he visited lakes in Mandalay Division and sought means to conserve water and to prevent pollution.
At Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science in Yezin, Pyinmana, he heard a report on teaching-aid requirement.
The minister gave suggestions and stressed the need to promote staff welfare.
He also visited Fishery Department Offices. in Nyaunglebin Township and Bagon Division.

(10) Railroad sections inspected
YANGON, 2 Sept - Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung and officials inspected railroads from Taungdwingyi to Pyinmana stations on 1 September.
The minister met officials and engineers of Divisions 11 and 5 and gave instructions on repairs, do's and don'ts and requirements.
He also inspected production of sleepers at Minpyin No 28 Saw Mill an Poke Pin No 7 Saw Mill.
The minister inspected railroad section between Pyinmana and Yedashe.

(11) Minister for Mines receives Executive VP of Tasaki Shinju
YANGON, 2 Sept - Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint received Executive Vice-President Mr Tojiro Tasaki and party of Tasaki Shinju Company Ltd of Japan at his office at 4 pm today.
They discussed success of oyster breeding and pearl culture and production of high quality pearls.
Present were Deputy Minister U Myint Thein and officials.
