(1)   Performing arts events reflect high standard of Myanma culture

YANGON 21 Aug - The Leading Committee for Organizing the Sixth Myanma Traditional Performing Arts Competition held its second work coordination meeting at the National Museum on Pyay Road today with an address by Patron of the Sixth Myanma Traditional Cultural Performing Arts Competition Secretary-1 of  the State Peace-and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Also present at the meeting were member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for forming Arts Competition of singing, dancing, composing and musical instrument playing events is held every year and it is to be held for the sixth time this year.

(2)   Donations in cash and kind for Tatmadaw Hospitals

YANGON, 21 Aug - A ceremony to donate suction machines and cash for purchasing hospital equipment to be used at Tatmadaw Hospitals was held at Centre Garment Factory in Hline Township this afternoon.

Present were Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo, Chief of Staff (Navy) Captain Kyi Min, Chief of Staff (Air) Col Myint Swe, Vice- Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Director of Ordnance Col Chit Than, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice-Mayor Col Maung Pa, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council and departments concerned and donors.

On behalf of donors, Managing Director Mr Chan Kuoan of Essential Products Trading Ltd (FIC) explained about the Purpose of donation, and handed over six suction machines worth K 1.08 million to Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han.

Cash donations included K 300,000 by Essential Products Trading Ltd (FIC), K 200,000 each by Tawwin Myanmar Garment Factory Company Ltd, Ambassador Group and Taiwan Merchants Association, K 100,000 each by KA Industry Sewing Machine Co Ltd, Hendrich Enterprise Co Ltd, Centre Garment Factory and employees of the factory, China Airline, Tein Mei Co Ltd, Sungood Trading Co Ltd, K 50,000 by Myanmar Global Co Ltd and US S 100 by Lian Huat Shipping Co Ltd.

Secretary-2 Lt-Gen Tin Oo presented a Buddha image to the managing director of Essential Products Trading Ltd (FIC).

Brig-Gen Maung Nyo and Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han thanked the donors.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-2 and party inspected Essential Products Trading Ltd (FIC).

(3)   Minister inspects Thakayta Branch of MPPE

YANGON, 21 Aug - Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Lun Thi inspected Thakayta Branch of Myanma Petroleum Products Enterprise this morning.

He was welcomed at the branch by Deputy Minister for Energy Brig-Gen Thein Aung and officials.

The deputy minister and Managing Director U Aung Hlaing of MPPE briefed the minister on arrangements for new fuel oil transport system with the use of pipelines between Thanlyin Refinery and Thakayta Branch.

The new system aims at minimizing loss and wastage in transport using barges between the refinery and Danidaw Main Fuel Oil Storage Depot.

The minister then oversaw laying of pipelines, jetties and storage tanks in the compound of Thakayta Branch and gave instructions.

(4)   Minister for Commerce receives Ambassador of Malaysia

YANGON, 21 Aug - Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than received Ambassador of Malaysia Dato Abdul Wahab bin Harun and party at his office this morning.  Present also were Deputy Minister for Commerce Commodore Myo Tint, advisers, the director-general of the Trade Department and officials.

(5)   Cash donated to USDA HQ

YANGON, 21 Aug - Hailing the Annual General Meeting of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, social organizations donated cash to USDA Headquarters this morning.

The donor organizations were Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs, Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association and Myanmar Women Entrepreneurial Association.

On behalf of officials of the donor organizations, Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe explained the purpose of the donation.

Afterwards, Member of Myanmar National Working Committee for Women's Affairs Dr Khin Win Shwe handed K 100,000 donated by MMCWA to Secretary- General U Than Aung of USDA, Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe K 100,000 by MMCWA, Professor Daw May May Yi K 100,000 by Myanmar Women's Sports Federation and Thiha Thudhamma Theingi Daw Sein Sein K 100,000 by MWEA.

Secretary-General U Than Aung thanked the donors.

(6)   National level sports administration course concludes

YANGON, 21 Aug - National level sports administration course conducted under the International Olympic Committee Solidarity Programme concluded at Thuwunna Youth Training Centre this morning.

It was attended by Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win, Director-General of Sports and Physical Education Department Col Hla Myint Kyaw, Adviser to Ministry of Sports Col Ngo Ciin Pau, officials and guests.

Minister Brig-Gen Sein Win spoke on the occasion and then presented certificates to trainees.

Thirty trainees including three from Ministry of Education, three from Ministry of Defence and 23 from SPED attended the course.

(7)   Refresher Course No 2 for Officials of Cooperative Department concludes

YANGON, 21 Aug - Refresher Course No 2 for Officials of Cooperative Department organized by the cooperative education and training programme for 1998-99 concluded at Dhammayon of the Ministry of Cooperatives on Gyatawya Street in Bahan Township this afternoon with an address by Ministry of Cooperatives U Aung San.

Present were Director-General of Cooperative Department U Maung Hti, Deputy Director-General of Cottage Industries Department U Tin Aung, Managing Director of Cooperative Export and Import Enterprise Daw Khin Swe Soe, officials and trainees.

In his address, Minister U Aung San spoke of the need for administrative officials to have necessary knowledge and skill at their work, to hold positive and firm view, to take a leader ship role in striving for the progress of cooperative societies; to have a way of thinking appropriate to the market-oriented economic system and to work correctly and methodically.

He also elaborated on internal and external political situation and called on them to vigilantly crush axe-handles relying on external elements.

Then, Director-General of the Cooperatives U Maung Hti presented certificates to the trainees.

(8)   Finds show flourishing religion, commerce in ancient Hanlin

YANGON, 21 Aug - Minister for Culture U Win Sein yesterday inspected excavation of Hanlin, an ancient major town in Myanmar where religion and commerce had flourished according to records.

Frequented by people of Bagan in the past, it had a grand palace enclosed by a wall, two miles from north to south and one mile from east to west, surrounded by a moat in eastern, western and northern sectors.

Only 16-feet long sector of the wall is left at present.

Archaeology Department has surveyed Hanlin area since 1905 and conducted excavation five times from 1962 to 1967 to record its history based on finds such as a section of the palace wall, earthen pots and coins.

Ruled by 799 Pyu kings from Shwepyi Koewaradaw Mintayagyi to Minpyone, it was a square shaped town leaning 15 degrees 46 minutes from north to west.

During the inspection, Director-General of AD U Nyunt Han briefed the minister on excavation and restoration of the finds till today, Director U Tin Soe on excavation cultural artifacts in Hanlin old town, its history and restoration programmes, researcher Shwebo U Thein Tun on religion, history and settling of Pyus and Myanmars in the country and a local teacher U Nyo Win on location of religious buildings.

U Win Sein suggested them to also conduct excavation at the northern parts of the town.

Accompanied by officials, he visited the area where Nagayon Dam was built to irrigate land during Hanlin era and restoration of stone inscriptions of Pyu, Bagan and Innwa areas.

At Nyaungkobin Monastery, he inspected conservation of ancient cultural heritage.

(9)   Soe Soe Mya wins gold in World Youth Taekwando Championship

YANGON, 21 Aug - Soe Soe Mya of Myanmar won gold in women's fly-weight class of World Youth Taekwando Championship and Festival 98 held in South Korea after beating the rival of Russia 8-6 in the final.

Along the way to the final, she-beat the rival of China 6-4 in the first match, that of Kazakhstan 10-1 in the second match and that of Korea 6-4 in the third match.

A total of 19 athletes took part in the class.

Khin Swe Oo of Myanmar was the fourth in the women's pin-weight class in which 23 athletes took part after losing to her competitor of Russia 2-4, and her compatriot Kyaw Kyaw Htoo was in the same position in men's pin weight class in which 94 athletes took part after losing to his competitor of Russia 4-6.
