(1)   State Peace and Development Council Chairman Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to Indonesia

YANGON, 17 Aug - On the occasion of the anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, which falls on 17 August 1998, Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Excellency Prof Dr Ing Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie, President of the Republic of Indonesia.

(2)   General Maung Aye inspects construction work in Sagaing, Mandalay Divisions

YANGON, 16 Aug - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, accompanied by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo, ministers and senior military officers, left Bahtoo Tatmyo, Yaksauk Township, Shan State (South), for Monywa, Sagaing Division, yesterday morning.

On arrival there, they were welcomed by member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council Commander of North-West Command Brig-Gen Soe Win. Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Deputy Commander Brig-Gen Soe Myint and officials.

Then, General Maung Aye, Lt-Gen Tin Oo and party helicoptered to the work-site of Multi-purpose Thaphanseik Dam Project being implemented near Thaphanseik Village, Kyunhla Township.
 

In the briefing hall of the project, Director-General of Irrigation Department U Myo Myint, Director of Construction Division 4 U Maung Maung Tin, Assistant Chief Engineer of Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Win Kyaw reported on progress of work in implementing the project and arrangements for generating hydroelectric power.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint gave a supplementary report.

General Maung Aye gave instructions on effective use of materials provided for the projects without causing any loss and wastage, timely completion of the projects and staff welfare.

Later, the General, the Secretary-2 and party inspected building of diaphragm wall, earthwork, the site chosen for construction of hydroelectric plant and building of spillways.

Employees of the project are making all-out efforts to complete construction of Multi-purpose Thaphanseik Dam by 2000, which can supply water for agriculture and generate electricity.

In the afternoon, the General and party went to Kyunhla.

They were welcomed there by Division Commander of No 33 LID Col Win Myint and officials.

In the hall of Kyunhla Township Peace and Development Council, Chairman of Shwebo District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Han and Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Aye Kyu reported on development work of Kyunhla.

Later, General Maung Aye gave instructions, and extended greetings to departmental officials and towns-elders.

Then, General Maung Aye presented gifts to the people of Kyunhla through the chairman of Township Peace and Development Council.

(3)   International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University to open end of 1998

YANGON, 16 Aug - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt this afternoon inspected arrangements for the opening of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University.

Accompanied by officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt arrived at International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University near the Buddha's Tooth Relic Pagoda in Mayangon Township at 2:30 pm today.

They were welcomed there by Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Secretary of Yangon City Development Committee Col Myint Aung, heads of department, Directors-General and officials of Religious Affairs Department and Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana and officials of the University.

Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa briefed the Secretary-1 on progress in construction of International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University, condition of lecture halls and hostels, students seeking admission to the University, strength of faculty members, collection of academic books, appointment of services personnel and arrangements for opening of the University.

Pro-Rector of the University Maha Ganthavasaka Pandita Dr Bhaddanta Neminda explained the academic matters.

Pro-Rector (Admin) of the University Dr Hla Pe also explained the administrative matters.

Officials of the Public Works briefed the Secretary-1 on progress in construction of the University and arrangements for the construction of hostels.

Pro-Rector Dr Bhaddanta Neminda, Head of Pariyatti Maha Department Bhaddanta Pinnadipa and those present took part in the discussion for opening of the University.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said a series of coordination meetings was held to establish the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University with the scholars and Sayadaws, adding that Myanmar is the centre of Theravada Buddhism in South-east Asia and International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University will stand as a model university.

Arrangements have been made to open the University at the end of 1998, he said.

The Secretary-1 urged officials to carry out the aim of the State to open the International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University possessing required characteristics.

He also spoke of the need to accelerate work to establish International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University at international level in accordance with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe.

Then, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt inspected water purifier to be used in the university, computer room, construction of lecture halls and construction projects, renovation of hostels and greening of its environs.

(4)   Monsoon paddy to be cultivated on 1.13m acres in Yangon Division

YANGON, 16 Aug - Member of State Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than attended ceremonies to mark completion of cultivation of paddy in Mingaladon and Hlegu Townships of Yangon North District today.

He toured the field of farmer U Aye Myint, who has cultivated manawthukha paddy strain on 20 acres, and attended the collective weeding and stirring work.

Of the target to cultivate monsoon paddy on 1.135 million acres in Yangon Division, 1.115 acres have been put under paddy crop.

In Hlegu Township, the crop has been cultivated on 81,620 acres.

The Commander later inspected the paddy fields in the township.

(5)   Mayor inspects disease control measures in South Okkalapa

YANGON, 16 Aug - Member of Myanmar National Health Committee Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, Joint Secretary of YCDC U Kyi Win and officials inspected measures being undertaken for disease control in South Okkalapa Township, construction of low-cost housing units for personnel of YCDC in Dagon Myothit (North), building embankment in Thingangyun Township and tasks for proper drainage in Botahtaung Township this morning.

The mayor and the deputy minister inspected prevention of DHF and control of mosquito in 4 and 10 wards in South Okkalapa Township.

They inspected the site for low-cost housing units for YCDC personnel in Dagon Myothit (North).

The mayor and party went to Thingangyun Township and inspected building embankment and tasks for proper drainage in Botahtaung Township.

(6)   Minister oversees Mandalay international Airport Project

YANGON, 16 Aug - Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe oversaw Mandalay International Airport Project yesterday.

Accompanied by Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung, Director-General of Marine Administration Department U Soe Win, Managing Director of Inland Water Transport U Tun Aung Myint and officials, the minister flew to Mandalay yesterday morning.

The minister was welcomed at Chanmyathazi Airport in Mandalay by Officiating Deputy Commander of Central Command Commander of Tactical Operations Command Col Tun Kyi and departmental officials.

Accompanied by Col Tun Kyi, the minister and party proceeded to Mandalay International Airport Projects.

At the project office, Superintending Engineer U Tun Kyi and Project Director U Ohn Myint briefed them on progress of work, construction of the runway, apron, airport building, control tower and other works.

Director-General U Win Maung presented supplementary report.

The minister gave suggestions on effective supervision for completion of the project as scheduled, procurement and storage of construction materials and landscaping.

Later, he inspected construction of the runway and the airport building.

He met officials and personnel of the ministry's departments at the Department of Civil Aviation.

He next toured Yadanabon Dockyard of Inland Water Transport and transport of cement for Mandalay international Airport Project at Shwekyetyet Jetty in Amarapura Township.

(7)   Basic Accountancy Course No 1/98 of Thayawady District USDA ends

YANGON, 16 Aug - A certificate presentation of Basic Accountancy Course No 1/98 organized by Thayawady District Union Solidarity and Development Association was held at the meeting hall of District Peace and Development Council on 15 August.

CEC members of USDA Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint and Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung spoke on the occasion.

CEC members said the courses are essential for development of the association and spoke of training individually or in group, opening of multiplier courses and making efforts to possess efficient organizational capabilities.

(8)   Minister for PISANRDA tours Sagaing Division

YANGON, 16 Aug - Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, accompanied by officials of Development Affairs Department, met executive officers, engineers and staff of Mandalay Division and Amarapura Township Development Affairs Committees at Amarapura Township DAC office on 14 August.

The minister also met Secretary of Sagaing Division Peace and Development Council, members of Development Affairs Supervisory Committee, executive officers, engineers and staff in Sagaing. He inspected Myoma Market.

The minister discussed academic matters and accommodations with Rector of University for Development of National Races at Ywathitgyi, Sagaing.

The minister met service personnel of Myinmu, ChaungU and Monywa Township DACs and inspected markets, parks, streets, the site for regional development supervisory office of Border Areas and National Races Development Department.

(9)   Myanmar delegation leaves for India

YANGON, 16 Aug - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin left here this morning to study agricultural development in India and for bilateral technological cooperation in agriculture at the invitation of Minister of Agriculture of India.

The delegation was seen off at the airport by Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Brig-Gen Khin Maung, departmental officials and families.

The delegation includes Managing Director of Myanma Agriculture Service U Tun Than, Director-General of Water Resources Utilization Department U Win Shwe and Director of Agricultural Planning Department U Tin Htut Oo.

(10)   Cornerstone of delivery room for Dalla Township MCWA laid

YANGON, 16 Aug - A ceremony to lay cornerstone of delivery room for Dalla Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association was held in Kamakathwe Ward in Dalla this morning.

Donor of K 3.37-million building is U Tun Aye-Daw Khin Myint of Mandalay Shoe Shop on Shwebontha Street in Pabedan Township.

Chairperson of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association (Central) Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe laid nine gems and silver casket.

Chairman of Yangon South District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Maung Maung Sein and Chairman of Dalla Township Peace and Development Council U Kyaw Shwe sprinkled scented water on the stone inscription.

(11)   Cultural delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 16 Aug - A 20-member Myanmar cultural delegation led by Rector of University of Culture Lt-Col Zaw Than left this morning to attend Workshop on Thai-Myanmar Music and Fine Arts Presentation in Thailand from 16 to 23 August.

The delegation was seen off at the airport by Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt, Director-General of Fine Arts Department U Tin Htoo, officials of University of Culture and Royal Thai Embassy and families.
