(1)   Senior General Than Shwe sends felicitations to King Albert II of Belgium

YANGON, 21 July - Senior General Than Shwe, Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar, has sent a message of felicitations to His Majesty King Albert II of Belgium, on the occasion of the National Day of Belgium which falls on 21 July 1998.

(2)   Annawa Fisheries Co Ltd donates K 1 million for Defence Services Sports and Physical Education Management Committee

YANGON, 21 July - Managing Director of Annawa Fisheries Co Ltd U Htay Myint donated K 1 million to Defence Services Sports and Physical Education Management Committee at Annawa Cold Storage in Nyaungdan in Pazundaung Township this evening and it was attended by Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Adjutant General and Chairman of Defence Services Sports and Physical Education Management Committee Lt-Gen Win Myint.

Present also were Minister' for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo, Director of Medical Services Brig-Gen Mya Thein Han, Deputy Adjutant-General Col Ye Tun, Commandant of Defence Services Self-defence and Sports Institute Col Sein Tin Win, Tatmadaw officers (Army, Navy, Air), departmental officials and well-wisher's family.

Managing Director U Htay Myint presented K1 million to Vice Adjutant-General Brig-Gen Maung Nyo who presented a certificate of honour to him.  U Htay Myint explained about the donation.

Brig-Gen Maung Nyo thanked the donor.

Commandant Col Sein Tin Win explained about the athletes of the institute.

Then, the Secretary-3 and party inspected processing and package of lobsters and cold storage.

Managing Director U Htay Myint and officials conducted them round the factory.

(3)   Deputy Prime Minister receives GM of the Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co Ltd

YANGON, 20 July - Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received General Manager of the Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Co Ltd Mr Tsunekiyo Endo and party at his office this afternoon.

Present also were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of State Peace and Development Council Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung and officials of Myanma Insurance.

(4)   National Convention Convening Commission meets

YANGON, 20 July - National Convention Convening Commission held a meeting at the Commission Office this afternoon, attended by Chairman of NCCC Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Vice-Chairmen Maj-Gen Sein Htwa and Brig-Gen Pyi Sone and members.

Maj-Gen Saw Lwin delivered an address.

Members of National Convention Convening Work Committee and National Convention Convening Management Committee presented matters pertaining to the National Convention.

Commission members also took part in the discussions.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks by the chairman.

(5)   Donation for MMCWA

YANGON, 20 July - The Embassy of the People's Republic of China donated TV, refrigerator and toy to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association at the MMCWA building on Thanthuma Street in South Okkalapa Township at 10 am today.  Ambassador of PRC Mr Liang Dong handed three TVS, three refrigerators and toy to Vice-Chairperson of MMCWA Dr Khin Win Shwe who presented a certificate of honour to the Ambassador.

Mr Liang Dong explained about the donation.

Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe thanked the donor.

Similar ceremony was held at the MMCWA building at 11 am.

United Nations Women Association donated US $ 500 to Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association.

Liaison Officer of United Nations Women Association Mrs Viginia Robson handed US $ 500 to Chairperson of MMCWA Professor Daw Kyu Kyu Swe who presented a certificate of honour.

Present also were CEC members of MMCWA and well-wishers.

(6)   Minister inspects Institute of Marine Technology

YANGON, 20 July - Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe, accompanied by Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Myint and officials, visited the Institute of Marine Technology (IMT) this evening.

Principal of the Institute U Aung Soe Swe briefed the minister and party on functions of the institute.

The minister gave instructions on dividing administrative, training and office sectors in the extension project of buildings.

Next, Director U Maung Maung Lay of MTM Maritime Centre, which is cooperating with the IMT, reported on construction of Smoke House and Command Control Centre for conducting special fire fighting course.

The minister and party then visited the site for the Command and Control Centre and called for meeting the standards, minimizing loss and wastage and systematic use of existing buildings.

They proceeded to the training halls of the Mercantile Marine Cadets and Marine Engineering Cadets and inspected teaching of the cadets there.

The minister then met the cadets and told them to reciprocate the government's goodwill and that responsible personnel would make all arrangements to make the institute an international class.

The minister and party inspected the lecture halls and furniture.

(7)   Raw opium, heroin seized in Lecha

YANGON, 20 July - A combined team comprising members of Defence Services Intelligence and Myanmar Police Force, acting on a tip-off, stopped and searched the Van with the La 1025 number-plate driven by Zaw Win (a) Aye Hon, aged 35, son of U Paw Sai Kaw of Myaybyu Ward, Taunggyi, in Lecha at 9:40 am on 2 July.

The team found and seized six packages of raw opium weighing four viss and ten tical and heroin weighing half tical, which were concealed in three preserved mustard packages in the van.

According to further information, the team arrested owners Aik San, aged 19, son of U Lon Yi and Ma Ar Yee, aged 26, daughter of U Law Hsan of Pangsan Village, Tangyan Township.

Lecha Township Myanmar Police Force opened a case, and action is being taken against them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law.

(8)   2.24 million amphetamine tablets seized in Nawhghkio

YANGON, 20 July - A combined team comprising members of Tatmadaw intelligence unit and special narcotic squad seized 2.24 million amphetamine tablets at the Nawnghkio check point on 6 July.

Acting on a tip-off the team stopped a Honda saloon with number plates 2Kha/3896 driven by Maung Nyo, 26, son of U Tun Tin, of Koungnaung Ward, Moege Street in Muse. It then found 11,200 blue packets of amphetamine tablets each containing 200 tablets in a concealed compartment in the front of the car body. The amphetamine tablets totalling 2.24 million in pink colour each bears "W" letter.

Along with the driver, conductor Kya Chan, 28, son of U Jan Aye, of region-4, Khema Thiri Ward in Lashio, and owner of the saloon car Swan Kyin Soun (a) Ai Lyan, 28, son of U Twan Ai Pan, of region-12, Ward 5 in Lashio, were also arrested.

Action is being taken against the three.

(9)   Minister urges PR personnel to polish their calibre to enhance their capability

YANGON, 20 July - Special Refresher Course No.5/98 for officers of the Information and Public Relations Department began with an address by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung at the training hall of the News and Periodicals Enterprise on Pansodan Street this morning.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Aung Thein, Director-General of IPRD Lt-Col Chit Naing Managing Director of Printing and Publishing Enterprise U Than Maung, Managing Director of NPE U Tin Kha, Managing Director of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise Col Bo Kyi, Director-General of Myanma Radio and TV U Khin Maung Htay, the IPRD deputy director-general, directors, advisers, instructors, guests and trainees.

In his opening address, Minister Maj-Gen Kyi Aung said the special refresher courses are being conducted to enable IPRD Staff Officers undertaking tasks of the Ministry of Information in the States and Divisions to carry out their duties effectively and fully for achieving complete success.

(10)   GDP Computation Course No.2/98 opens

YANGON, 20 July - The GDP Computation Course No.2/98 was opened at the Planning Department of the Ministry of National Planning and Economic Development today.

The opening ceremony was attended by Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha, Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Zaw Tun, directors-general and officials.

In his address, Minister U Soe Tha said GDP is a major factor to be considered in evaluation of the national economic development as well as that of the neighbours and in studying economic growth and resources.

He spoke of the importance of accurately computing the GDP based on production and import and noted that in the neighbours, GDP is issued quarterly and make certain changes and reforms to uplift the weaker economic sectors.

He said that in Myanmar, arrangements are being made to issue GDP quarterly not only for the entire nation but also for respective states and divisions.  Personnel working in this project, he pointed out, need to be proficient in their tasks and acquire accurate data in cooperation with the regional authorities and departments.

He also spoke of the need to calculate the economic indicators-to show whether economic crises in some neighbouring countries affect Myanmar or not.

He also spoke at length on collection of accurate data to issue verified GDP.

Altogether 40 trainees are attending the course.

(11)   CEC member accepts over 4,000 USDA membership applications in Pyay District

YANGON, 20 July - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, together with officials, attended USDA membership application submitting ceremonies in Shwedaung and Pyay Townships, Pyay District, Bago Division, on 17 July.

Present were Division Commander of No.66 LID Col Aung Min, member of Bago Division Peace and Development Council Division Commissioner U Htay, Police Col Ba Htoo, Secretary of Division USDA U Saw Maw Tun and executives, senior military officers, district and township authorities, secretaries and executives of District and Township USDAs, organizers, members and local people exceeding 2,500.

Col Tin Hlaing accepted 1,350 USDA membership applications including 1,250 from seven village-tracts of Shwedaung Township, 70 from Township General Administration Department and 30 from Maternal and Child welfare Association at the ceremony held in Myanmar Village, Shwedaung Township, Pyay District, on 17 July, and 2,924 including 1,205 from nine village-tracts of Pyay Township, 1,350 of students and 369 of members of Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade and departments at the ceremony held in Paungde Village, Pyay Township.

He also elaborated on the conviction, objectives and tasks of the association, and donated cash and magazines to Township USDA, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigade, Maternal and Child welfare Association and social organizations.

(12)   Newspapers for library of USDA Central Training School

YANGON, 20 July - Managing Director of Myanmar Flying Horse International Ltd U Aye Kyu donated 6,480 newspapers to library of Union Solidarity and Development Association Central Training School in Pyidaungsu Hall of the Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby this afternoon.

Central Executive Committee of USDA Deputy Minister for Information U Thein Sein and Principal of the Training School Lt-Col Aung Kyi Tun accepted the donations and presented a certificate of honour.
