(1)   Secretary-l receives national race leader of Special Region 2 in Kachin State

YANGON, 11 July - Chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received national race leader of Special Region 2 in Kachin State U Zaw Maing and members U Sai Phon, Dr Tu Ja and Dr La Ja and elders U Zabwe Juam, U La Wan and U Khun Myat at the Tatmadaw Guest House on Inya Road at 4 pm today.

Also present were Minister for Commerce Maj-Gen Kyaw Than, Minister for Forestry U Aung Phone, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Director-General of the State Peace and Development Council Office Lt-Col Pe Nyein, heads of department and officials.

Matters on commerce, mining, timber extraction, power generation and regional development were discussed at the meeting.

(2)   Secretary-2 inspects construction of Aung Zeya Bridge

YANGON, 11 July - Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Tin Oo inspected construction of Aung Zeya Bridge across Hline River linking Insein and Hlinethaya Townships this morning.  Accompanied by Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Vice-Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander Col Hsan Hsint, Officer on Special Duty at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Than Tint and officials, the Secretary-2 inspected completion of approach bridge and piling on Insein bank.

Deputy Minister Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint reported on implementation of the project and progress of work and Superintending Engineer (Project) U Khin Maung Aye on progress of work sector-wise.

Director-General of Waterways Department U Pe Than, Director-General of Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development U Arnt Kyaw and member of Yangon City Development Committee Col Thaung Wai reported on cooperation with related work.

Chairman of Yangon North District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col San Matu and Chairman of Township Peace and Development Council U Khin Maung Kyaw reported on removal of houses in the area of the project.

The Secretary-2 said he came to fulfil the requirements at the site and spoke of the need to take care of worksite safety for engineers and workers.

He spoke of supervising of minimizing wastage and loss of construction materials, making efforts for completion of the standard bridge as scheduled, waterways in monsoon, maintenance of banks and staff welfare.

He added the projects are being implemented for the good of generations to come and called on coordination on removable of houses between respective persons and departments concerned.

The 580-metre Aung Zeya Bridge is scheduled to be completed in 1999.

(3)   1998 World Population Day observed

YANGON, 11 July - The 1998 World Population Day was observed at International Business Centre on Pyay Road this morning, attended by Minister for Immigration and Population U Saw Tun.

Present also were the ministers, the deputy ministers, heads of department, Ambassadors of ASEAN Countries, officials of nongovernmental organizations and the ministry, directors-general and directors of Immigration and National Registration Department and Population Department, head and deputy head of Yangon Division and township heads of Immigration and National Registration Department and Population Department, prize winners and guests.

(4)   Imported bearing plates for Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project arrive

YANGON, 11 July - Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, accompanied by officials of Public Works, inspected unloading of imported construction materials for Bo Myat Tun Bridge Project from MV Zhong Shan at Bo Aung Kyaw Wharf, Yangon Port, this afternoon.

He was welcomed at the wharf by Deputy Managing Director U Thant Zin, Chief Engineer (Bridge) U Soe Win and officials of Public Works.

The materials were 10 sets of bearing plates weighing 17.8 tons imported from the People's Republic of China.

The minister oversaw the handling of materials and gave instructions.

Bridge frames of the bridge on Nyaungdon bank will be installed when the imported bearing plates arrive at the project site.

(5)   Theravada Buddhism flourishes in Myanmar today thanks to discharge of religious duties by members of the Sangha

YANGON, 12 July - Padana Nayaka Sayadaw Tipitakadhara Ashin Sumangala Lankara (Agga Maha Pandita) of Yangon Tipitaka Maha Gandhayon Kyaungtaik on whom honorary doctorate degree was conferred by the Faculty of Buddhist Literature of the Maha Chulalongkorn Vijjalaya University in Bangkok, Thailand, was honoured and Waso robes were offered to the Sayadaws at the Kyaungtaik at Ward 9 in Mayangon Township, Yangon Division, at 1 pm today and Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt supplicated on religious matters and offered Waso robes and alms to the Sayadaws.

Also present were Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita, Secretary Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhama Jotika Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara and member Sayadaws, the Chairman Sayadaw (Shwekyin Gana) of Yangon Division Sangha Nayaka Committee and member Sayadaws, Tipitakadhara Ashin Sumangala Lankara and Sayadaws and members of the Sangha, Sayadaw Varagaruvara Pannagon who is assistant to the Presiding Sayadaw of Wat Mahadat Monastery in Bangkok and Thai Sayadaws as well as member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Labour Vice-Admiral Tin Aye, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, deputy ministers, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, lay disciples and well-wishers.

(6)   Hino authorised service station opens in Mayangon

YANGON, 12 July - Hino authorised service station of Shwe Thanlwin Co Group and Golden Pyit Taing Htaung Co Ltd opened at No Gagyi/61 of Thirimon Housing Estate in Mayangon Township this morning, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

Present also were Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing, Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Mayor U Ko Lay, military officers, departmental heads, officials of Shwe Thanlwin Co Group and Golden Pyit Taing Htaung Co Ltd and guests.

(7)   Secretary-1 lays cornerstone for construction of Convocation Dhammayon of State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon)

YANGON, 12 July - A ceremony to lay foundation for the construction of Convocation Dhammayon of State Pariyatti Sasana Tekkatho (Yangon) was held on the precincts of the Tekkatho on Kaba Aye Hill at 8 am today, attended by Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.

The ceremony was also attended by Minister for Industry-2 Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Minister for Hotels and Tourism Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Minister for Social Welfare Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Minister for Labour Vice-Admiral Tin Aye, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ministry of Construction and officials.

Deputy Director of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Aung Thein Nyunt emceed the ceremony.

Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt put a golden casket on the foundation and planted the stone inscription on the foundation.

Deputy Director of Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana U Min Kyi read the stone inscription.

Secretary-I Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Ministers Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, Maj-Gen Saw Lwin, Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Vice-Admiral Tin Aye, Brig-Gen Lun Maung and Mayor U Ko Lay laid the cornerstones on the foundation in respective places and sprinkled scented water on the foundation.

After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 and party showered the confetti to mark the success of the ceremony.

(8)   Dry rations donated to ChauAltatgyi Pagoda Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Mayangon Jotikayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Dhammethaka Nunnery

YANGON, 12 July - Ceremonies to offer dry rations donated by Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) families and well-wishers to Bahan Chaukhtatgyi Pagoda Pariyatti Sarthintaik, Mayangon Jotikayon Pariyatti Sarthintaik and Mayangon Dhammethaka Nuns' Sarthintaik were held at respective Sarthintaiks today.

The ceremonies were attended by Secretary-2 of the State Peace and Development Council Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations Chief of Staff (Army) Lt-Gen Tin Oo and wife Daw Khin Than Nwe, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Minister for Labour U Kyaw Aye, Deputy Minister for Religious Affairs U Aung Khin, Vice-Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee Vice Mayor Col Maung Pa Tatmadaw officers, departmental officials, district, township and ward authorities, members of Township Union Solidarity and Development Association, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, guests and well- wishers.

(9)   Minister for Health inspects Orthopaedic Hospital

YANGON, 12 July - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, accompanied by Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo, Director-General of Medical Research Department Dr Than Swe, Deputy Director-General of the Health Department Dr Wan Maung and officials, inspected the Orthopaedic Hospital at No 132 on Hanthawady Road in Kyimyindine Township this morning.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein met Medical Superintendent Dr Kyee Myint, professors, lecturers and nurses at Lecture Hall.

Medical Superintendent Dr Kyee Myint briefed the Minister on history and formation of the hospital and staff number, Professor Dr Khin Maung Htoo on treatment and teaching, Assistant Engineer U Aung Htay on construction of staff quarter and Lecturer Dr Khin Maung Han on function of Myanma Tissue Bank.

The minister looked into the requirements and gave instructions.

The minister and party inspected X-ray Unit and Myanma Tissue Bank and gave suggestions.

Then, the minister inspected the ward and cordially met the patients.

He also inspected laboratory unit, medicine shop and patients receiving treatment and operation room and gave instructions.

(10)   Myanmar delegation leaves for Thailand

YANGON, 12 July - Myanmar delegation led by Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung left here by air this morning for Thailand to attend the 5th Conference of ASEAN Minister Responsible for Information (AMRI) to be held from 13 and 14 July in Bangkok.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Minister for Culture U Win Sein, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister U Than Shwe, Managing Director of News and Periodicals Enterprise U Tin Kha, Director-General of Information and Public Relations Department Lt-Col Chit Naing, Director-General of Myanma Radio and TV U Khin Maung Htay, Managing Director of Myanma Motion Picture Enterprise Col Bo Kyi, Head of Office U Khin Maung Myint and officials.

The Minister was accompanied by Chief Editor U Kyaw Min of The New Light of Myanmar and PSO to the Minister Captain Ko Ko Naing.

(11)   Minister for Transport inspects construction of Mandalay International Airport

YANGON, 12 July - Minister for Transport Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation U Win Maung arrived at NyaungU Airport this morning.

The minister inspected airport lounges, toilets, handling of flight control equipment and records.  The minister, accompanied by Deputy Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Yan Thein, on arrival at the site for Mandalay International Airport, was welcomed by Superintending Engineer U Boon Kyi and Project Director U Ohn Myint.

Officials then reported on sector-wise.  The minister gave instructions on progress of work of runway, taxi way, completion of the project in time and progress of work of airport terminal, the site for construction of control tower and oil storage tanks.

The minister also discussed construction of terminals, supervision of equipment and difficulties.

He also inspected apron, safety for planes and greening of airport environs at Chanmyathazi Airport.
