(1) Objective conditions in Myanmar, cultural traits and customs of people to be made known to the world

YANGON, 1 July - The Tourism Development Management Committee held its meeting No.1/98 in the Uttara Room of Karaweik, Kandawgyi, here at 2 pm today and Chairman of the Management Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address.

(2) Mid-Term Review of Myanmar-UNICEF Country Programme of Cooperation (1996-2000)

YANGON, 1 July - Mid Term Review of Myanmar UNICEF Country Programme of Cooperation (1996-2000) was held at the New World Inya Lake Hotel this afternoon.

Present were Minister at the Office of the Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Brig-Gen Abel, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation U Ohn Myint, Deputy Minister for Health Dr Mya Oo, heads of departments, ambassadors, resident representatives of UN agencies, officials of UNICEF office and guests.

(3) Chairman Sayadaw of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee arrives back

YANGON, 1 July - A Myanmar Buddhist delegation led by Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Myingyan Sayadaw Bhaddanta Sobhita arrived back here by air this evening.

The Sayadaw and Buddhist delegation attended Htidaw-hoisting ceremony of Dhamma Talaka Peace Pagoda in Birmingham, the United Kingdom. Myanmar Buddhist delegation led by the Chairman Sayadaw was welcomed back at Yangon International Airport by member Sayadaws of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee under the auspices of Vice-Chairman of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Suriyabhivamsa, members of the Sangha, Minister for Religious Affairs Maj-Gen Sein Htwa, Director-General U Arnt Maung of the Religious Affairs Department, Director- General U Sann Lwin of the Department for Promotion and Propagation of the Sasana, Adviser to the ministry U Thet Shay, Deputy Director-General Dr Myo Myint of RAD, officials and disciples.

Secretary of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Magway Sayadaw Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhammajotika Bhaddanta Kumara and layman Director of DPPS U Tun Mra Aung also arrived back.

(4) Freight cars, rails for NIR arrive

YANGON, 1 July - Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation Thura U Thaung Lwin, accompanied by Charge d' Affairs ai of the Embassy of the Republic of Yugoslavia Mr M Nikolin inspected unloading of freight cars from mv Angelique at No 5 Sule Wharf this morning.  Altogether 82 freight cars and spare parts were brought from Bar Port, Yugoslavia, as the third consignment.

Managing Director of Myanma Five Star Line Col Khin Maung Kyi, General Managers of Myanma Port Authority and Myanma Railways and officials reported on unloading of freight cars.

MR purchased 402 freights and spare parts worth US $ 28 million from Yugoslavia for speedy of freight transport services and it will extend its freight services with the use of these freights.

The deputy minister and party also inspected rails and materials for building of ordinary class coaches imported from the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Korea on mv Sagaing of MFSL.

The deputy minister gave instructions on unloading of goods and sending them to the worksites carriages.

(5) Deputy Minister oversees Gyaing (Zathabyin) Bridge Project

YANGON, 1 July - Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Thura Aye Myint, accompanied by officials of Public Works, inspected Gyaing (Zathabyin) Bridge Project in Mon State yesterday.

Senior Engineer U Khin Maung Win and officials briefed the deputy minister on progress of the project.

The deputy minister oversaw building of main towers on both banks of Gyaing River and approach bridges and roads and installation of steel cables and frames.

He instructed engineers to complete building of approach roads on both banks as soon as possible, to closely supervise installation of steel cables so that occupational hazards will not occur as it was difficult to install the cables across the river during the monsoon.

The deputy minister also told them to prepare for installation of bridge frames and to strive to complete the bridge as targeted, meeting set standards.

(6) Myanmar Golf Federation holds coordination meeting

YANGON, 1 July - Chairman of Myanmar Olympic Committee Minister for Sports Brig-Gen Sein Win attended the coordination meeting for golf event development in Padamya Hall of National Indoor Stadium 1 in Thuwunna at 2:30 pm today.

Present also were Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Myanmar Golf Federation Deputy Minister for Education Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, President of Myanmar Golf Federation Brig-Gen Win Hlaing, Director-General Col Hla Myint Kyaw of the Sports and Physical Federation Department, OSD Col Thaung Htaik, Adviser Col Ngo Ciin Pau and officials of SPED and MGF.

The minister spoke on the occasion.

Then, Brig-Gen Win Hlaing took part in the discussions on golf event development and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung on future tasks of MGF.

The meeting ended with remarks by the minister.

(7) 390,000 stimulant tablets seized in Kengtung

YANGON, 1 July - Acting on a tip off, members of Defence Services Intelligence Unit, Myanmar Police Force, Special Anti-Drug Squad and personnel of departments concerned searched white colour van Ba/9153 being driven by Bala (a) Zaw Lun Aung, 28, son of U Mya Thaung of Zaydan Ward, Mongyang Township, and white colour van Ba/9796 being driven by Sai Sam Aung, 20, son of U Sam Yi Nwe at Nongnun checkpoint in Kengtung Township on 16 June morning.

The authorities seized 2,000 each stimulant tablets -in 109 packets totalling 218,000 hidden between wool in the pillow in the car and fuel tanks.

According to the investigation, the owner of the stimulant tablets and cars was Daw Nang Hin, 46, daughter of U Aik Yi, of Zaydan Ward, Mongyang Township, the authorities seized more van Ba/6869 which was driven by Sai Nwan Kyaw, 23, son of U Sam Yi Nwe, bringing together with 2,000 each stimulant tablets in 86 packets totalling 172,000, In Yanglu Village, Kengtung Township at 17 June afternoon.

Action is taken against culprits, cars and other precursor substances under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Kengtung Township Police Station.

(8) UMEHL gems jade sale 3-8 August

YANGON, 1 July - Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited will organize the ninth gems and jade sales at Myanma Gems Emporium where sales will be conducted on bargain and auction systems on 7 and 8 August.

Buyers may check the gems and jade from 3 to 6 August.

Registration fee for local buyers is K 4,000 per head and foreigners $ 20.

Entrepreneurs wishing to sell their gems, jade or jewellery at the sales may entrust their items from 10 to 20 July.

(9) MMA to open on HIV/AIDS/STD Prevention and Care Training

YANGON, 1 July - HIV/ AIDS/STD Prevention and Care Training, jointly sponsored by Health Department of the Ministry of Health, Myanmar Medical Association, World Health Organization and United Nations Development Programme, will be opened at the hall of Myanmar Medical Association, No.249, Theinbyu Road, Mingala Taungnyunt Township, at 9 am on 4 and 5 July.

Interested in-service physicians and general practitioners may attend it.
