1)  USDA enables over four million youths to attend various courses of public interest Objective of building peaceful, prosperous, modern nation on right track

YANGON, 24 June - Union Solidarity and Development Association Special Refresher Course No 2 and Management Course No.14 for USDA Executives began in the Pyidaungsu Hall of Central Public Relations Unit in Hmawby, Yangon Division, at 9 am today with an opening address by Patron of USDA Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander -in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe.

Also present were members of USDA Patrons Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) General Maung Aye, Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Secretary3 Lt-Gen Win Myint and the Council members, Deputy Prime Ministers Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin and Lt-Gen Tin Tun, ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the Acting Auditor-General, members of the USDA Central Patrons, USDA Central Executive Committee members, deputy ministers, senior military officers of the Ministry of Defence, the directors-general and managing directors of the departments and enterprises concerned, guests, course-in-charge Lt-Col Aung Kyi Tun and course supervisors and trainees.

Excerpts from the address: USDA worthy of honour for serving public interest -

USDA members urged not to lose sight of public interest but to happily and actively serve public interests with goodwill and exerting their utmost physical and intellectual efforts.

USDA members are to guard against and eliminate the dangers to harm the five aims of the association.

USDA members cautioned not to think little of the foreign nations and at the same time not to copy everything after thinking highly of them. More serious attention should be paid to preserving own culture and bolstering ethical values at a time when market-oriented economics.

Achieving high economic growth is vital and important in building a peaceful, modern and developed Union of Myanmar.

Success in agriculture will directly contribute toward Improving the standard of living of the people.

It would be necessary to minimize 1098 and wastage, exercise thrift and boost commodity production to achieve, complete economic success.

2)  Secretary-l receives Ambassador of Nepal

YANGON, 24 June - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Ambassador of Nepal Mr Satchi Shumshere JB Rana at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence at 4 pm today.

Also present were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of the Protocol Department.

3)  ELT books presented to universities

YANGON, 24 June - A ceremony to present ELT books for universities under Higher Education Department by Thuta Enterprise was held at Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall this afternoon.

Present were Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Cooperatives U Aung San, Minister for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung, Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Brig-Gen Pyi Sone, Minister for Science and Technology U Thaung, Minister for Education U Than Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Minister at the Office of the Prime Minister Brig-Gen Lun Maung, Deputy Ministers for Education Dr Than Nyunt and Brig-Gen Soe Win Maung, officials of the Office of the State Peace and Development Council, heads of departments, Rectors, Pro-rectors, Principals, professors of universities and institutes, officials of Higher Education Department (Lower Myanmar), librarians of universities and institutes in Yangon, well-wishers and guests.

Patron Daw Wah Wah Tun of Thuta Enterprise reported on ELT books with audio visual aids.

Next, Managing Director Dr Tin Htwe of Thuta Enterprise presented 451 ELT books worth US $ 6,041 to Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt who accepted the gifts and then presented a certificate of honour to the donor.

Minister U Than Aung thanked the donor.

Next, the Secretary- I greeted the donor and observed the books.

ELT books will be on display at Yangon University Diamond Jubilee Hall from 9 am to 5 pm till 27 June.

4)  Secretary-1 hosts dinner in honour of literati and delegates to MWJA conference

YANGON, 24 June - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt hosted dinner in honour of literati and delegates who attended the Second Conference of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association at the Pyidaungsu Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds this evening.

Secretary-3 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Win Myint, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than, ministers, the Chief Justice, the Attorney General, acting Auditor-General, the Chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board, the Yangon Mayor, the deputy ministers, CEC members of MWJA, literati, delegates and guests attended it.

The Secretary-1 then greeted CEC members and literati.

Vocalists entertained the delegates and the guests accompanied by Myanma Athan Modern Music Troupe.

After the dinner, the Secretary-l cordially greeted CEC members and literati.

5)  MIC Chairman receives Chairman of Myanmar Investment Management Ltd

YANGON, 24 June - Chairman of Myanmar Investment Commission Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin received Chairman and CEO Mr MS Dobbs Higginson of Myanmar Investment Management Company Ltd of Hong Kong at his office at 3:30 pm today.

Present also were officials of the Commission Office.

6)  164 gallons of acetic anhydride seized in Muse

YANGON, 24 June - A combined group including members of Defence Services Intelligence Unit and Muse Special Anti-Drug Squad, acting on a tip-off, raided the house of U Sai Myat, No.27, Mongngaw Ward, Selang Village, Muse Township, at 11 am on 10 June. But the group found son Aik Hkarn Meing, not U Sai Myat.

The authorities seized 41 plastic containers of acetic anhydride, totalling 164 gallons, hidden in a basket near the stable behind the house.

The group is investigating to take action against U Sai Myat. Action has been taken against Aik Hkam Meing, their workers Maung Thaik, son of U Nyi Pwint, and Hsat Maung, son of U Aik Soe, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by Muse Police Station.

7)  306 drug-related cases exposed in May

YANGON, 24 June - The Tatmadaw, the Myanmar Police Force and the Customs Department exposed 306 drug-related cases in May.

The authorities seized 98.3885 kilos of opium in 35 cases, 2.9205 kilos of heroin in 119 cases, 18.1745 kilos of marijuana in 35 cases, 2.329 kilos of low-grade opium in 12 cases, 52.55 Litres of Phensedyl in five cases, 0.0393 kilo of opium oil in two cases, 17 kilos of ephedrine in one case, 186,618 tablets of amphetamine in 20 cases, 74 gallons of acetic anhydride in two cases, seven gallons of ether in one case, 2,125 gallons of ethyl alcohol in one case, 39 gallons of Lysol, 40 gallons of spirits, 60 gallons of acid, 25 gallons of ethyl ether, 0.36 litre of cough syrup in two cases, 64 cases for failure to register and seven other cases.

During that period, the battalions and units of Tatmadaw seized 47.955 kilos of opium, 2.3821 kilos of heroin, 50,025 tablets of amphetamine, 74 gallons of acetic anhydride, seven gallons of ether, 2,125 gallons of ethyl alcohol, 39 gallons of Lysol, 40 gallons of spirits, 60 gallons of acid and 25 gallons of ethyl ether.

The Myanmar Police Force seized 49.4175 kilos of opium in 33 cases, 0.5383 kilos of heroin in 119 cases, 18.1745 kilos of marijuana in 35 cases, 2.227 kilos of low grade opium in 12 cases, 50.05 litres of Phensedyl in four cases, 0.0393 kilo of opium oil in two cases, 17 kilos of ephedrine in one case, 136,593 tablets of amphetamine in 20 cases, two cases of acetic anhydride, one case of ether, one case of ethyl alcohol, 0.36 litre of cough syrup in two cases, 64 cases for failure to register and other seven cases.

The seizures by the Tatmadaw and Myanmar Police Force were 1.0252 kilos of heroin in four cases, 6.2595 kilos of opium in eight cases, 25.3 litres of Phensedyl in one case, 132,407 tablets of amphetamine in four cases and 1,028 tablets of ephedrine.

The Customs Department also seized 1.016 kilos of opium in two cases, 0.0001 kilo of heroin, 0.102 kilo of low-grade opium, 2.5 Litres of Phensedyl in two cases.

Actions were taken against 421 persons-368 men and 53 women- in connection with 306 drug-related cases in May.

The battalions and units of the Tatmadaw, while discharging security duty, could destroy one heroin refinery at map reference P-148637 in Kutkai Township, northern Shan State, on 2 May, and two refineries at map references P-119637 and P-559510 in Namhuchaung Village, Muse Township, on 4 and 8 May, and seized chemicals and other precursor substances.

The two-pinpoint actions caused in seizure of drug-related cases in May.

A combined group comprising members of Tamu Special Anti-Drug Squad, regional Defence Services Intelligence Unit and Tamu Police Station, acting on a tip-off, searched Nya/ 3426 bus near Kanwa Village in Tamu Township on 22 May. The authorities nabbed travellers Maung Maung Tin and Khin Maung Aye together with 17 kilos of ephedrine, using in stimulant tablets, from their bags, and action has been taken against them.

On 30 May, members of Taunggyi Special Anti-Drug Squad and Railways Police Force, acting on a tip-off, searched LoikawThazi train at Aungban Station and nabbed travellers Win Myint and Ma Kyi Myint with 9.798 kilos of opium, and action has been taken against them.

8)  Myanma Art and Sculpture Exhibition continues

YANGON, 24 June - Visitors including delegates to the Second Conference of Myanmar Writers and journalists Association visited Myanma Art and Sculpture Exhibition at the National Museum today.

Fifty-three sculptures and 936 paintings are being displayed at the exhibition which opens daily from 9 am to 4 pm till 28 June.

Six sculptures and 51 paintings have, been sold at the exhibition to date, fetching nearly K 3.6 million.

9)  MWJA Conference delegates go sightseeing in Yangon

YANGON, 24 June - The delegates who attended the Second Conference of Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association went sightseeing here today.

They were accompanied by Chairman of MWJA U Kyaw Aung (Kyaw Aung), Vice-Chairman-1 U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Vice-Chairman-2 U Tin Kha (Tekleatho Tin Kha), Vice-Chairman-3 U Than Maung (Than Maung), Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun-Twantay) and executives.

First, the delegates visited the National Museum where Deputy Director-General U Kyaw Win of Department of Cultural Institute conducted them round.

They then proceeded to City of Industry Hlinethaya where they were welcomed by Director-General U Arnt Kyaw of Human Settlement and Housing Development Department.

He explained facts about it to the guests and replied to their questions.

The delegates then visited Mega Steel CI Sheet Factory, Taiyi Shoe Factory, Nawaday Garden and Padethabin City in the area.

In the afternoon, they visited Myanma Gems Museum and Myanma Gems Mart on Kaba Aye Pagoda Road.

Adviser to Myanma Gems Enterprise U Thein Lwin and officials conducted them round.

Afterwards, the delegates went to Thanlyin where they paid homage to Sandawshin Kyaikkhauk Pagoda and visited Thakayta Viewpoint Amusement Park where they were welcomed by Administrative Officer Capt Min Aung.

10) Cash for Taunggyi Township WJA

YANGON, 24 June - Hailing the Second Conference of Myanmar Writers and journalists Association, Pa-O Yadana Bus Line donated K 10,000 to Township Writers and journalists Association in Taunggyi on 19 June. Chairman of the Bus Line U Khun Aung Thein presented the cash to Chairman of Township WJA U Khun Sein Win (Maung Khun Nwe-Inlay).

U Khun Sein Win presented copies of Taunggyi Centenary magazines and U Tha Oo (Tha Oo- Shanpyay) Taunggyi University magazines for libraries of Information and Public Relations Department.  District IPRD Officer U Shwe Bo accepted the gifts.

11) Minister for Health receives Ambassador of ROK, Indian entrepreneur

YANGON, 24 June - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received Ambassador of Republic of Korea Mr Kyong Bo Choi and party at his office at 3:30 pm today.

Similarly, the minister received Country Manager for Myanmar Mr Debashis Ghosh of Core Healthcare Ltd of India at the same venue at 4:30 pm today.

Present also were officials of the ministry.

12)  Minister inspects Thakayta Wharf Project

YANGON, 24 June - Chairman of Supervisory Committee for Myanma Railways and Inland Water Transport to Operate Full Capacity Minister at Office of the Prime Minister Maj-Gen Tin Ngwe visited Thakayta Wharf Project of Myanma Five Star Line this afternoon.

Managing Director of MFSL Col Khin Maung Kyi and officials briefed him on progress in building the wharf and coastal services.

In his meeting with officials, the minister urged them to work in accord with the rules, to strive for boosting national income from the transport sector, to cooperate with the committee and to minimize wastage.
