(1)   Senior General Than Shwe receives Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of SRV, party

YANGON, 23 June - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe received visiting Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr Nguyen Manh Cam at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

With the Senior General, were Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt, Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win, Myanmar Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam U Khin Soe and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol Department.

The SRV delegation was accompanied by Ambassador of SRV to Myanmar Mr Nguyen Dang Khoa.

(2)   Secretary-1 receives Member of the House of Councillors, party of Japan

YANGON, 23 June - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received General (Retd) Shigeto Nagano, Member of the House of Councillors of Japan, and party at Dagon Yeiktha of the Ministry of Defence this morning.

With the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Ohn Gyaw and Deputy Minister U Khin Maung Win and Director-General Thura U Aung Htet of Protocol Department.  The guests were accompanied by Ambassador of Japan Mr Kazuo Asakai and Defence Attache Col Akira Sato.

(3)   Ivanhoe, GSMED enter into third JV

YANGON, 23 June - The Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration Department of the Ministry of Mines and Ivanhoe Myanmar Holdings Ltd signed a mutual cooperation contract for exploration of gold and copper deposits and feasibility study at the Ministry of Mines this morning. Exploration of gold and copper deposits will be undertaken under joint venture for the third time at No.12 Block in Myesaytaung area in Letpadan Township, Bago Division.

Present were Minister for Mines Brig-Gen Ohn Myint, Secretary of Myanmar Investment Commission Brig-Gen Maung Maung, Deputy Minister for Mines U Myint Thein, Director-General of GSMED U Soe Myint, Project Manager Dr Andrew H G Mitchell of Ivanhoe Myanmar Holdings Ltd and officials.

Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint spoke on the occasion.

Director-General U Soe Myint and Project Manager Dr Andrew H G Mitchell also spoke and signed the contract.

Secretary of MIC Brig-Gen Maung Maung handed work permit of MIC to Dr Andrew Mitchell.

Minister Brig-Gen Ohn Myint presented permit of experimental survey to Dr Andrew Mitchell.

(4)   Yangon Command Commander's Shield Volleyball Championship begins

YANGON, 23 June - Yangon Commander Commander's Shield Volleyball Championship for 1998 began at Hline Gymnasium here this morning.

Member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than declared the championship open.

Also Present were the deputy commander, tactical operations commanders and senior military officers of Yangon Command and families of Tatmadawmen.

Thirty teams are taking part in it.

(5)   SRV delegation tours Yangon area

YANGON, 23 June - Delegation led by Mr Nguyen Manh Cam, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, accompanied by officials, visited Hmawby Model Farm today.

Officials of Myanma Agriculture Service briefed them on salient points of the farm.

At the seed factory, they observed the process of work.

On arrival at Mingaladon Industrial Zone, they were welcomed by Director- General of Human Settlement and Housing Development Department U Arnt Kyaw, General Manager of Mitsui Co Ltd Mr Tsujii and officials.

An official of DHSHD briefed them on points of the zone.

Mr Nguyen Manh Cam presented a souvenir to U Arnt Kyaw.

At Mingaladon Garden City, Managing Director of Zaykaba Co Ltd U Khin Shwe explained progress in implementing the project which includes world class golf course and housing estate.

U Khin Shwe conducted them round the city.

(6)   CEC member gives lecture

YANGON, 23 June - Member of the Central Executive Committee of the Union Solidarity and Development Association Deputy Minister-for Information U Thein Sein this morning lectured on the policies of the Stale in connection with five objectives of the association at Basic Management Multiplier Course No.3 for Executives being conducted by Dagon Township USDA of Yangon West District beginning 19 June.

Present were Chairman of Dagon Township Peace and Development Council U Than Win, Secretary of Township USDA U Khin Hline Tun and executives, organizers and 156 trainees.

(7)   Minister inspects hospitals

YANGON, 23 June - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein inspected the Psychiatric Hospital this afternoon.

Deputy Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung, Medical Superintendent Dr Toe Aung and officials briefed him on treatment, medical care and relocation of hospital buildings.

He gave suggestions on beautifying the compound, water supply and staff welfare programmes.

At Yangon General Hospital, he heard a report on number of patients warded and cost-sharing health programme.

The minister gave suggestions on effective implementation of cost-sharing health programme, ensuring convenience of patients and sanitation.

He inspected phone lines installed with Japanese aid of $ 120,000.  He urged officials to strive to ensure modern treatment in Yangon and other parts of the nation.

YANGON, 23 June - Ambassador of Italy Dr Cesare Capitani called on Deputy Prime Minister Vice-Admiral Maung Maung Khin at his office this morning.

They discussed bilateral relations.

(9)   Minister visits site for construction of power generation plants in Hmawby

YANGON, 23 June - Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, accompanied by advisers of the Myanma Electric Power Enterprise U Bo Kyin and U Tin Shein, looked into the selection of the site for a gas-fired power plant near Myaungtaga Village in Hmawby Township this morning. He then met officials and coordinated plans to lay natural gas pipeline and installation of power line conveniently and speedily.

At the Township Electrical Engineer's Office in Hmawby, the minister and party met the staff and discussed power supply in town, collection of revenues, informing the public that there are power cuts due to below-capacity power generation of hydro-electric power plants and fulfilment of the electricity requirements.

They also visited the Hlawga Gas-Fired Power Plant and Combined Cycle Power Plant under construction. The minister urged the responsible personnel to complete the plant earlier than schedule and called for good quality of equipment used, worksite safety, minimizing costs and staff welfare.

The minister and party proceeded to the Steel Pipes Factory in Hlawga and toured it.

(10)  Work done at Second Conference of MWJA

YANGON, 23 June - The Second Conference of the Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association approved four issues, passed decision on one and placed four on record.

The four issues approved were approval of the report of the Central Executive Committee and future tasks, the financial statement and auditors' report, the statement on literary fund and amendments to the constitution.

Decision passed on one issue was that three future tasks would be implemented in accordance with the objectives and future tasks of the association members.  The three tasks are: the association members are to actively participate in serving national interests by having making the people imbued with correct concepts and high morale with the use of literature and journalism; to extend organization for new members, consolidate organizational setup of the association, raise the leadership role and make organization work dynamic and effective; to bring about improvement in skills of MWJA members, look after their welfare and regularize creation and publishing of literary works; and to strive for increasing the readership.

The four issues placed on record were: placing on record of four papers on social affairs, of expressing thanks to well-wishers who donated cash to the MWJA between the First and Second Conference, of townships which won prizes for their outstanding performance and of condolences for those who passed away.
